“Cuba in April”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 12, 2014

We stayed at the Resort from Mar 29 to Apr 11 and had a great time. Room 6702 the best room in the resort. It was nice and quiet at night , this was a big plus. The room was kept clean and neat thanks to our maid Milayda. The beach was great as was the pool, however there could have been a few more daytime activities. The food was ok, the bbq hamburgers at the playa bar were awsome
as was the bar service mmm cold beer.We would come back to this resort.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the lobby closer to the pool you have more open space almost like your own yard.

I have been to Varadero 3 Times and this was my 4th trip. Traveled with 3 male Friends . I am used to bad hotels in Cuba so I can not really say I had a bad experience in Melia Las Antillas but given the fact that it is branded as 4+ star hotel my expectation was a bit higher. The food was no different than the 3 star hotel in which I had previously stayed. The line ups for grill, BBQ and omelet was long and many fruits like mangos would disappear in matter of minutes. The food itself was ok and I mean OK with Cuban hotel standards. However if the hotel claim it is 4+ star it really needs to be improved both the variety and quality of food. The bars and drinks were really good and they had all the drinks.
Staff were generally friendly, hardworking and helpful and we did not have any particular problems with the level of the service as they tried their best . Rooms however needed to be clean more often and thoroughly. Although the bed sheets were clean the same can not be said about bed covers which smelled funny.
The beach was nice but the week that we were there it was really windy. The space under the shades at front of beach was limited and one always had to look for empty spots. One solution for that is to add couple more rows of shades closer to the sea as to increase the number of shads.
At the end we had good time at this hotel because our expectation was average and hotel delivered that .

My spouse and I, along with my sister and her partner, just recently returned from this resort and we had a blast! There wasn't much of a night life when it came to the Disco or anything but the night shows were fabulous! The rooms, were, OK, but the service from the employees working in the buffet and ala-carts were amazing. We especially had an amazing interaction with one of the waitors from the buffet. We made sure to sit in his section every night for dinner just in hopes that he would be the one to help us. He was fantastic.
Shout-out to Jorge Felix Aguila. I wish I could have taken you back home with me! You were awesome and we enjoyed your company! Hope all is well, take-care.

Room Tip: Try and stay in the hotel itself, I found the room we had in one of the villas was pretty damp and m...

This is an excellent hotel to relax and enjoy the beach and sun but the guards on the beach do not help people with disabilities taking down the lounging chairs unless you tip them. The washroom facilities are far from the beach. My husband and I went for a walk and when we came back, the towel was stolen. I did not have a towel for 3 days. I asked the concierge but she was rude and didn't even listen to my explanation. She wanted me to pay $15.00 for a lost towel. So, I talked to the manager and she was very nice to give us a another towel without paying. I bought 3 postcards, stamps from the resort and mailed in the mailbox addressed to my friends and my home but we never received them. Take the postcards with you or mail them in Havana post office. Tip generously to get a good service.

Room Tip: This is a small hotel so any room is good.

Many thanks for recommending us as an excellent hotel to relax and enjoy the beach. We regret the issue at the beach area and how the situation was handled by the staff. We thank you for having taking time to offer constructive criticism which would help us in improving our operations.

We stayed at the Melia Las Antillas from April 26 until May 3 for our first visit to Cuba. We arrived at the resort at 10 PM after a nine hour flight delay – not a great way to start the holiday but the resort knew of the delay and were waiting for us. Check in was smooth and fast with cava on ice next to the desk.
Rooms – We sent a room request before leaving and were given exactly what we wanted on the top floor of one of the villas, not the main building. Rooms are a bit basic but are very clean with a nice coverlet on the bed, a couch, a rocking chair and lots of pillows. The bed is firm but we prefer it that way so we had great sleeps. There was a mini fridge with 2 soft drinks, a Buchanero beer and a large bottle of water which was all replenished daily. There were no coffee makers in our building but apparently some of the other buildings had them – we asked twice at reception and they just said there were none. The bathroom vanity was OK but the bath itself left a bit to be desired. It was narrow with old pipes and the water pressure wasn't good. It had a shower curtain which was the first resort we ever stayed that did not have a glass enclosure. But everything was really clean; the room attendant did a great job each day and even left us little notes (thank you Lucy!!). There was also a small patio with 2 chairs and a small table which overlooked the water feature that circles the resort.
Pool/Beach – Both fabulous. I loved the graded entry on one side of the pool and there were always loungers. We found loungers in the shade one afternoon at 2pm after returning from Varadero. There was also no problem getting fresh beach towels at any time of the day. The beach is beautiful, and we saw them using a tractor to rake away some of the kelp, but I feel the beach could be cleaner, shame on people who drop their cigarette buts or plastic cups in the sand. Loungers in the shade are a bit harder to get on the beach but you don't have to get up at the crack of dawn to play the towel game.
Food. We went to Cuba after experiencing Riviera Maya and Punta Cana, so we were expecting to have some food issues. However, food was not that big an issue. The breads are very tasty, and there is an omelet station at breakfast. Lots of fruit; honeydew melon, watermelon, pineapple, cantaloupe, orange and banana were all plentiful. Lunch and dinner buffets had some “interesting” looking dishes that we were reluctant to try, but other things were great with a fresh salad bar and a pasta station every day. Meat was overcooked – no big surprise. Service not that great at the buffets.
We also tried all three a la cartes and found the dishes we ordered to be tasty, well prepared and well presented. Service at the a la cartes was excellent and the ambiance (with live music) really enjoyable.
Entertainment – We really enjoyed the live entertainment with music in the lobby bar most evenings and a show each night at the theatre. The shows were very professionally presented with some of them having a live band. There was also a cello and violinist in the Italian restaurant and a sax player at Romantico that we really enjoyed. During the day there were some pool basketball and volleyball as well as aqua aerobics.
Would we return to Melia Las Antillas? not sure as we rarely go to the same resort twice. It was also a bit too laid back for us. But we had a great holiday there and we would definitely recommend it to friends should they ask.

Room Tip: Ask for a bungalow rather than the main building unless booking a suoerior room, only found in the m...

We booked very last minute for this vacation (literally two days). We weren't fussed about going to Varadero, but it was the only thing we could find in Cuba. Sunwing Champagne Flight down - fine, we had the Elite Plus seats which gave us a good leg room, but the flight attendants are so annoyed by the passengers, I wonder why they are flight attendants for a living. Arrived at Varadero and waited to get money changed to CUC's. Ran to the bus, and had a short drive to hotel with a great guide. Felt immediately let down at the hotel, as the front desk staff were not too interested in us, we weren't greeted, given welcome drink etc. The first set of forms we were given were not even us! We had to hand them back - and were finally given our keys to our 'supersaver' room. Ugh. The room was gross, is gross. Desperately in need of a revamp - top to bottom. Smelled musty, but the AC worked ok. The room was depressing, chipped bath tub, moldy grout, shower curtain hanging off, the room just looked half dressed. It was NOT 4.5 stars. Anyway, we toughed it out, went to the buffet which was quite good - lots of choice, we knew we would not go hungry. There is always that curious thing about food in Cuba - you see that they have all the ingredients but the way they put them together is just gross sometimes! Anyway...moving on, show was good that night, beach was beautiful and full of bright stars. Very few bugs. Next morning met with our Sunwing Rep, who was informative. Did not tell him about the room, as he was not the regular person - it was her day off. Went to the pool, had drinks, got settled in etc. Had lunch at the poolside restaurant. Food was good - hamburger and fries. No complaints. Dinner that night at the Italian - don't bother - the food was edible, but we felt as though we would be going back to the buffet that night to top up. Staff try but they are given little to work with I think. Dessert choices were Tartufo or Tiramisu - of course they have no Tartufo - so I had the Tiramisu - which was a cake I had had the night before at the buffet. Don't bother with the Romantico either - there is nothing romantic about a boiling hot restaurant (the AC never seemed to work properly anywhere), where a staff is cleaning up the water from a rainstorm right next to the table where you are trying to have a 'romantic' dinner. The food here was atrocious - really bad. For dessert I ordered the chocolate cake, which, get this, was a piece of white cake, white icing with chocolate sauce on it. I couldn't believe that! The rep helped us get a new room - not great but better than the depressing room we had. It was the second room they offered to us though, as the first one had seven dead cockroaches in the bathroom area. They were the only bugs we saw in rooms (aside from tiny ants) during our stay. Okay, enough with the negatives! The positive are - THE FANTASTIC CUBAN STAFF AT THE BARS AND RESTAURANTS....I have always had very positive interactions with staff at all the resorts we stayed at, but the folks at Melia Las Antillas saved this vacation for us. They were absolutely lovely. We left with two gifts given to us by two of the wait staff who live on so little. We were very touched by their generosity to us. We took lots of gifts, and everyone seemed so grateful. We tipped well, but that didn't dictate the service! Talk about doing a lot with a little - we would go back just to see some of these lovely folks again. The beach was amazing - and the water activities okay. The shows were good, but our last night there they brought in a rock band, and they shook the place up. They were fantastic! We in the end, had a great vacation and really enjoyed our time there, but they need to spruce the place up to call it a 4.5 star and really reward their staff who create great vacations for folks where the hotel lets them down.

Room Tip: not sure any of the rooms there are great - all need a revamp

We have just been back from a wonderful two weeks in Cuba ( April 18th to May2nd). This was our 7th time at the Melia Las Antillas. We brought our children for the first week and they have nothing negative to say about the hotel, the food was good, the gardens and vegetation was gorgeous, the personnel were very kind with all of us. Mairelys at the buffet is not only a waitress she is our friend now for 6 years, her sense of humor and positive attitude makes our stay enjoyeable. There are other people we would like to thank for their kindness and for making us feel at home they consider us as their family. There is Inelys at the pizzaria at lunch, Armando the cook. Our friends at the Italian restaurant, Mili, Suset, Eugenio, William, Irene, and not the least Pedro, they are the best we always have a great time with them but we should mention also the musicians who are great. Another special person is Liuska at the Customer service, she always has a great smile and is there to answer all our questions. Ramon , Alexis and the others at the lobby bar are worth mentioning also. Please mention also Armando at the entertainement he brings something positive to this resort. There are others but it is almost impossible to name them all but I want to talk about our dear friend Laura and her son Ernesto who sell art crafts at the Melia they are the best.
Since our last two visits in April and November 2013, we have found that there has been a large improvement at the hotel, they have painted in different parts of the hotel. The rooms are nice and what we noticed the most is at the buffet, there are always enough plates and glasses for everyone which is very important. We met the new food and breverage manager and I think his implication has alot to do with the service ; he is very present in the hotel.
Overall we all enjoyed our trip, the beach was the best the weather was warm and sunny . We will probably go back once again we hope that they will continue improving this hotel it is Worth it. Thanks again everyone!
