We stayed at the Tainos hotel for 2 weeks at the beginning of November.
We had a lovely holiday and really thought the hotel was of a good standard and small enough to ensure you got a personal service.
We emailed the hotel for a bungalow room near to the beach. We had room 3814 which was right near to the beach and quiet. We had a huge king size bed and a queen as well.
The room decor as previously mentioned is a little tired, but the air con shower bed fridge all were working the balcony was comfy.
I use my room to sleep change and shower and it was adequate for this and plenty hangers for clothes.
The maid did different towel art every day for us and we had clean towels every day and bed linen changed every few days.
The beach was wonderful spent best part of our hols here could not drag ourselves away.
Went for some nice long walks along the beach . Sunbeds good.Beach guy always there to help you out them out and he dusts them off for you. Bar at beach excellent.
Animation staff as all staff work very hard they even bring little games to the beach near to your sunbed for you to play of an afternoon plus there is water gym in the sea and dance lessons on the beach.
The staff from reception to the gardeners all work hard to keep the site clean and tidy.
look out for the little lizards and humming birds around the grounds.
The resturaunt is good and the Staff are so friendly and helpful Orlando and Adrienz and beatriz and lilianne( I know i have spelt these wrong ) thanks to you for all your hard work and service.
Now I am semi veggi and very fussy. I managed to find something to eat each day without any probs.
We went to the Japanese twice during our stay I just asked for no red meat or dessert and it was really good. don't have a big lunch though.
The Cuban was good too although we only went there once (my fussy ways). I had tuna fillet in there and it was very nice.
The lobby bar staff work very well and are always on hand to see if you would like another drink and a small tip really goes a long way, i enjoyed the Mojiotos and Mulatas .
My other half made his way through most of the cocktails during our stay, I enjoyed the coffee and also havana club and pineapple.
The reception staff are very good and helpful special thanks to Giselle , Anneyleys and Yamaris for getting us the room requested.
Like I said we are beach folk so we did not use the pool, but there seemed to be plenty of sunbeds available at all times, we watched a lovely water ballet show there one afternoon.
The bar there is quick to serve and we had lunch there a couple of times good selection.
The animation staff as i have already mentioned work really hard Elvis is completley mad but in a good way he remembers you and always has a laugh with you. All the others are great too and the shows they put on of an evening are great.
We really enjoyed the lion king show and of course the disco on the beach. Its been a while since i danced til 1 am in the morning.
We took the trip to Havana through First Choice and paid the extra for a private taxi, so glad we did . Danny who took us was so informative and gave us a good insight to the city.
If you have your own iteniary he will adhere to it . We went with the flow and got the time we wanted at each stop point so we could get the pictures we wanted and then will did not have to wait for others to catch up .
We ended the day at the flea market and got some good souviners to bring home.
Tip take some tissue and some money for tips in the loos, also if you wish to photo the old cars /taxis make sure you tip them. they get cross if not we saw a man take a picture and walk away they were not happy! Make sure you also wear comfy shoes/trainers and take a bottle of water and some suncream.
We also used the sightseeing bus where you pay 5 cuc pesos each and you can get on and off as much as you like all day around varadero , the lady on the bus tells you where each stop is like the eco park or al capones house or the shopping centre. Whatever floats your boat. We went out about 9 and were back for around 3.
You are quite safe to walk around during the day you do get a bit hassled in the markets but that is same everywhere around the world.
Do take with you plenty suncream mozzi stuff tissues some tip money. People over there aren't well paid at all and rely on these. Insulated cups for around the pool/beach. 3 pin plugs.
Do bear in mind this is a poor country their standards may not be ours but the certainly try their hardest. Go with an open mind and dont fret over little niggles.
Special thanks to all the wonderful staff that made our hols so enjoyable. Thank you all.

Room Tip: Email for a bungalow and if you can go for a 2nd floor one

It is a very good hotel in Cuba, but in an other place it wouldn't be that good. The room was ok. The food was very good, and also the coctails. There were two a la carte restaurants; cuba style, japanese style. The japanese restaurant was very good. The beach was ok, but if you can choose don't go to Cuba just for its beach.

myself and three friends from northern ireland stayed here in november. All 4 of us thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel, this is a great hotel with fantastic staff, everyone from the lobby bar staff, pool staff, entertainment team and cleaning staff are all friendly, helpful and so much fun. Between us we have all stayed in 5* hotels before and can honestly say this was one of the best. The food was plentiful, tasty and available all day. The drinks were generous and the wine lovely and we didn't mind them running out of certain spirits - as they say 'welcome to cuba'. The nightly shows were fantastic fun with professional dancing and music, The lunchtime salsa bands a lovely treat every day. we ate, drank, danced and laughed to our heart's content. Really enjoyed meeting all nationalities as well - hi to you all. The Japanese restaurant is good fun with good food and we went twice. The cuban restaurant was the only disappointment - poor food, no music - didn't go back. The daily entertainment was the best we have ever experienced, lots to do - shooting, archery, volleyball, dancing and wee games every now and again and the team were just so much fun and not too over the top - miss you all! The pool is cool and refreshing and not too crowded, the beach is lovely with a 'gentle' breeze and a good bar service. Please say a big thanks to all the staff for making this one of our best holidays.

Room Tip: second floor balcony rooms are recommended.

We stayed at the Tainos Nov 12 - 19/2012 and have nothing but wonderful things to say. We used TripAdvisor a lot to help with our decision, and are so happy to have chosen this resort!

1. FACILITIES/FOOD
The hotel is well kept, clean, has new pool chairs and furniture in the lobby. There are 4 restaurants and 5 bars on resort. The buffet at La Isabelica provides a great selection for all three meals. After a week it does feel a bit repetitive due to the restrictions on what products the locals can get. But their meat was always well cooked and we never had any worries about hygiene, etc. Particularly good were the chicken, potatoes and eggs! We didn't try the Japanese restaurant, but the lobster dinner at the Cuban restaurant was top notch! The snack bar by the pool is basically the same as La Isabellica - tasty and simple fare. All the bars have great service. They certainly don't skimp on the booze! Their pina coladas and daiquiris are simple but tasty.

2. ROOMS
We had no complaints with our room. It was clean, comfortable, quiet and well kept. We had a first floor bungalow farthest from the hotel and closest to the beach. We really liked the bungalow as opposed to a room in the hotel. A little more private, a little quieter.

3. SERVICE
Impeccable. There was only once that I received service that wasn't wonderful. Of particular note, Heidi at reception was kind, understanding and really sweet. Giselle, the Guest Services coordinator, was over the top in making sure our honeymoon was spectacular. She really went out of her way for us. Maite at La Isabellica was sweet and caring. One day we witnessed a motorcycle accident off resort and she brought me a little flower made out of a tissue... such a sweetie! Elvis and the entertainment crew are top notch - they work hard to make sure everyone is having lots of fun! Marta near the entrance will set you up with lots of fun tours!

4. TIPPING
We tipped $1 peso/day to the maid, $1 - $3 peso per meal, $1 for every two or three drinks, and then we left a few gifts behind for staff that had made a difference to us. We never felt any pressure to tip, but it was obviously appreciated when we did.

5. SAFETY
I had no worries about our safety on resort. I would have felt comfortable letting my kids attend the kids camp, the staff really have a sense of community because it's such a small resort, and they really watch out for their guests. If you have children, even little ones, know that they will be cared for very well by the resort's Kids Club!

6. POINTERS...
Bring extra towels... the resort is good about always having towels, but other guests at other resorts told me they always had trouble, so an extra towel is handy.
Take toilet paper with you if you go off resort. Lots of public toilets don't have TP and expect a tip to get a small handful. Take some with you.
Take a taxi - if you ask Giselle at the front entrance, she will get you one of the old cars to take you for a one or two hour tour around Varadero for $30 (1 hr) - $60 (2 hr) and it's so worth it!
Our favourite tour was the Catamaran tour - soooo worth the money! Make a point of seeing Havana. We took a tour with Transgaviota into Havana and loved it. The jeep safari we didn't enjoy as much - one of the drivers hit a motorcycle and it turned into a horrid day. Take a taxi to the Saturno Caves (they're right by the airport) and go with lots of daylight so you can get good photos.
I had the best exchange rate at our hotel - the Tainos is very honest about money exchange. They post the rates, give you a receipt, and I compared rates with other tourists from other hotels, and the Tainos was always best.

Keep an open mind, grab hold of your sense of adventure, and have a wonderful time. Tainos provides you with everything you need for a great trip, and I don't even want to try another resort after staying there. I felt "home" and welcomed and cared about - they made us feel like family. We were safe, cared about, treated well and respectfully and Giselle even asked us to email when we got home just to make sure we got home safe. They really do care, and they really do work their butts off for their guests. Way to go, Tainos! We love you guys!

Room Tip: We prefered the bungalow because it was quieter, more private, and we like to be able to step directly outside. All rooms are wheel chair accessible it seems. Check out time is noon, but if you ask you can often stay in your room or stay in the hospitality room if your flight is later in the night.

Husband and I arrived here after a very hectic couple of days in Havana and we were looking to relax and we certainly found the right place.

The room was basic but clean and tidy and definately a significant improvement on our crampt conditions in Havana. The room had 3 queen size beds in it. We had to push to together for our bed as for some reason we did not have a double, but this was no major issue. It has a mini bar (which is only refilled every other day), hairdryer and large TV ( only downside was no BBC news channel).

We had come looking for a replace to relax and so whilst the room wasn't five star it certainly fulfilled our needs.

The pool was great (if a bit on the cold side). Plenty of sun loungers and great access to the bar, poolside food etc. We walked the length of the beach every day, which was great exercise and the view was pretty stunning.

There are plenty of activities available, such as dancing, archery, bingo etc but we choose to have a fairly lazy time. We played tennis table a few times and whilst tempted never made it to the gym.

The food provided a good choice and variety. The japanese restaurant is a nice change. This is more about the theater and experience as there is a very limited menu. The cuban restuarant was a bit of a disappointment as it is described as a la carte (in a very loose sense I guess it is).

The drinks are plentiful, some of the measures were fairly eye watering. The on tap beer was not good at all, but if you keep your eye out bottles etc are occassionally available. Also found it a bit strange that Rose was only available in the restaurant and there was no wine in the Japanese restaurant, unless you paid extra.

The entertainment was good, we caught three of the shows during our week there.

We did suffer a bit from cabin fever during our week and so went into town shopping (you soon realise that every stall is selling the same items - just at a variety of prices) and stopped of a Maision Xanadu to see the bar at the top. This was fantastic and so much so that we went back there for dinner. It is a bit of a pain getting there but was worth the visit.

One of the main things about the hotel which others have touchon, were the staff. They were helpful throughout and we could not ask for anything more.

All in all this is a good hotel, which by Cuban standards may be a 4 star but is more like a 3 star but the cost reflects this and we found it to be value for money. Would certainly recommend this hotel if you are looking for a relaxing, stress free hotel.

Mrs. NicolaC,

All the staff and Management team at Iberostar Tainos wants to thank you for sharing your comments and experience with us and other readers. We are glad to know that you were able to enjoy our services, as the japanese restaurant and the shows at night evene were only 3 you weere able to do it. The wines that we do offer at the hotel in each restaunt are differents that it is why you will find more variety at the buffet than in the specialties restaurants. Rooms will be renovated next year. One of our strenghts in the hotel is our staff, all we do love our work and we always try to give our best in all we do.

We hope we can welcome you back again some day.
