This was our first trip to Cuba and we loved it. Apart from the 9 1/2 hour flight from Mcr and the jetlag after the journey home.

The hotel has great staff, especially Tanya in the Piano Bar, great food in all the restaurants, especially the Itallian, and would recommend to anyone.

Jut a couple of niggles from me, nothing major. First the lack of stock in the mini bar, and secondly as several have mentioned the tiles in the pool. For a 5* hotel, this needs to be addressed.

We took an overnight trip to Havanah booked through our TC rep, which I would deffo tell anyone to do. All food and most drinks included, full tour on the first day, overnight at the nacional, which was great, and a show at Club Tropican, supberb, and a whole day free time the second day.

I could go on and on, lots of positives, all in all, I would deffo stay at this hotel again.

Just got back from Cuba stayed at the Ocean Varadero El Patriarca resort which has more of a modern feel and that is why we decide to stay there. It is definitely not a 5 star although it is very clean and the staff are great and speak English. It is one of the farthest resorts from the main city, but there is a bus that comes to the resort that runs 9am-2am which you can get there and back. The tiles in the pool are coming off apparently they did not fill the pool after all the tiling was laid and the sun started to lift them which caused this. My main complaint was the beach sand it is white sand but not pristine white sand it is FULL of cigarrete buts and broken seashells everywhere and the water is not crystal clear. I went there with highexpectations of the beach and was disappointed. My sister and I are both vegetarians and there was plenty selection of food to choose from it was not gourmet food but it was better than expected due to all the negative reviews about the food in Cuba. We could only eat at one of the a la carte restaurant which was the Italian restaurant. The staff were great by far the best there we visited 3 times. Luis, Ariel, Sandra, Yenisey, Lili, Sahili were all amazing highly recommend going for dinner there. You were able to visit the a la carte's as many times as you liked but were not able to book reservations unless you were privilege guests if you went around 8pm it was not to busy. It felt very safe leaving the resort on our own traveling with my sister and I. Locals on and off the resorts were friendly. **If you plan on leaving the resort bring your own bathroom essentials.** Overall it was a great vacation Cuba is a beautiful place and plan on going back within the next few years!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room by the pool it is central to everything.

We stayed in this hotel12th May-26th May 2013. Never done all inclusive and we were pleasantly surprised. The food was plentiful and a great selection. If I had one fault it would be the "A La Carte" menu it was like a business men's lunch and some of the staff were not to say the least on the job.. Our maid was brilliant so a BIG thanks to Bertha.. A special GREAT BIG THANKS to THE LOBBY STAFF Nestor,Jerry,Yaimara,Yania,Rosana,Ivelice,Meplin hope I got your names right. This is from the GIN andTonic ... For us it was a shame that there is NO WHERE to go as we like to go walkabout.. and not spend al our time by the pool...But having said that we had a great time..

My husband and I just came back from one week stay at this lovely resort. This was our first but not last visit to Cuba. We fell in love with Ocean Varadero and its wonderful staff.
Check in was quick. We stayed in block 51, great location, even though there is no a bad one.
Bedroom was very nice, modern, clean, specious, close to the best beach we have ever seen.
Food in the buffet was good, also there are three a la cart restaurants with no limits, we went to Italian three times and to Gourmet twice, both very good.
Entertainment was great from daily activities, to live music every night and top performers after.
We love this resort, but what we love most is its super friendly staff. They work very hard.
Roberto from entertainment is very nice, kind and highly professional with great communication and entertainment skills.
Ivelise, waitress in the lobby serves the best cappuccino and always with a smile. Sandra from the Italian restaurant works hard to please.
Tania from the Piano bar makes the best lemonade with dark rum.
We had the most pleasant and relaxing holiday ever in this beautiful resort.

The hotel rooms are of a good standard , we originally booked a normal room and then up graded to find the room was exactly the same if slightly larger , we up graded to premium as the pool in the main complex is a real mess with large areas of missing tiles and you are walking on uneven grout. The upgrade allowed us use of the privileged pool even this had a small strip of tiles missing the privilege bar open for breakfast and the private beach area , You still need to visit the buffet or restaurants for lunch & dinner and the food is awful always luke warm and everything tastes the same , the private beach area is not manned and most days you will find guests from the main complex occupying most of the sun loungers .we complained to the rep but nothing was done about this . We spoke to other guests who all agreed they would not come back here or recommend this hotel to friends .

Room Tip: room 5224 is a safe bet near beach and pool but away from all noise

The best things about this resort is the beach, if you have little ones bring your own sand toys. They also provide all the non-motorized activities for free. The rooms are also a good size and very modern looking. They also have two waddling pools for kids and the main pool also has an area for kids to play in, however they do not provide any water toys or floaties. The food was for the most part not good. It was very bland, and there are not very many options to add some spice to your food. The three al a carte restaurants were not good, oriental (was to salty, and rice for sushi was mushy) gourmet (steak was so overdone that i could not chew it) and the italian (was okay) however the service was great. The one food item at this resort that they make well is the pizza. For the little ones if they like peanut butter and cheerios take them along because they do not have these at the resort. Overall the people working at the resort were very friendly. If you have any baby items or pretty much in good condition that you don't need anymore the people working there really appreciate them.

Room Tip: try getting rooms closest to the pool, if traveling with children get rooms on the main floor their...

Myself, my husband and another couple stayed at this resort from April 16-23rd. This was my third stay in Varadero, stayed at Blau and Sandals in previous trips. The hotel was lovely. We had a great holiday, but there were a few small issues that could have made this holiday and hotel out of this world.
Check in was a breeze, fast and friendly. Traveling with another couple we had requested rooms in the same building. Upon check in we were assigned rooms in 15 block. When we got to the room we were very happy with the location being close to the pool. There was very little noise from the disco; I think the Air conditioning drowned it out at night.
The room was beautiful and new, spotless.. rain shower and soaker tub. We also were given two face cloths everyday. Sometimes we were given towels with rust stains on them, this was pretty gross. The maid service was good. It was the first time I ever stayed in a resort and didn’t get towel art every day.
Sometimes there was no CUC available at the hotel for exchange; this was a problem for people trying to pay for excursions and to even have pesos to tip the staff. Wireless internet or the internet cafe was also a problem; there were no cards to buy. No reason why they didn’t have them and no idea when they would get any. So we didn’t get to use internet at all to get in touch with family at home for the entire week we were there.
The food was good, no bacon for breakfast until the end of the week. There was also a good variety, but the fresh veggies were limited. Bring your own ketchup packets. Service at the buffet was hit or miss, sometimes there was always people to get you a drink or sometimes you would ask and never get a drink. The drinks were good, but there was no consistency.
The a la cartes are fantastic, we tried all three, even managed to get into the gourmet twice. If you are not a privilege guest you don’t get to make reservations, so it’s a gamble to see if there is space, Italian was the hardest to get into. I think that the hotel should allow the regular guests to make at least one reservation. The dress code is long pants for men and no flip flops, there was people in there in shorts, flip flops, t shirts...etc.. I think it takes away from the experience, if they set a dress code it should be enforced. There was no dress code for buffet, as long as you were dry, even for dinner there was no dress code it was very casual. Al la carte service and food was all top notch.
The pool was fantastic! I loved the different depths, my husband is a swimmer and he wasn’t a fan so we spent a lot of time in the deeper section. There were days that there were no beach towels, just keep your towel if they don’t have one for exchange.
Make sure to brink bug spray, there are lots of flies or sand fleas, I am not sure where I got my bites this trip. The beach in Varadero is beautiful.
Entertainment was good at night, the shows were sometimes repetitive but I really enjoyed them. Animation in the day was pretty run of the mill, same thing every day, I think they could do better. Jenny and Jorge are very funny and entertaining.
For excursions we did the double decker and deep sea fishing. Deep Sea fishing is boring, 4 hours of trolling for fish, we caught one baracuda at the very end of the day. Totally not worth the 395 cuc for 4 people.
Overall I would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: block 15 was good, close to pool but far enough from the disco.
