“Great place!”
Reviewed January 15, 2013

We have been to Cuba several times in the past, this time we have nothing negative to say about this resort. Great place, delicious food not bland at all! Great service all around never waited for a thing. Beach is great a lot of chairs and palapas, could walk for hrs! I had to go see a doctor at one point, he was fluent in english got my medication within 30 min from an outside pharmacy. Had to pay of course but, got reimbursed from travel insurance. Four of us went to Havana on a private tour $405 for a mini bus (sits 10 people) it included a tour guide and we were in charge of where to stop and for how long so it was not tiring at all. The tour guide was fantastic we have learned quite a few new things about Cuba, Havana was unreal I highly recommend going its only 2+ hrs from the resort. Our room was in block 65 central location to everything. Dont miss the water ballet night show it was very nice to watch. If you are looking for a relaxing place with good food, clean beach and great staff I highly recommend it. One more thing if you want to bring any gifts for the maids bring toiletries and cosmetics its very expensive for them to get and not the best quality .

Room Tip: block 65 central location

originally my wife and i were trying to book a Cuban / Varadero vacation on the cheep. however, after looking at many of the hotel options and taking trip advisor into account we began to quickly realize that saving money isn't always the best thing to do when looking for a hotel [lol]. so in the end we decided that comfort, cleanliness & service was something that we were going to try to strive for when looking for a place to stay. Even though the Ocean Varadero El Patriarca is a brand new hotel 90%+ of the reviews were very positive so we decided that it was going to be the place for us. We were very happy with our choice. for us, it was 7 days in paradise. the rooms & grounds were clean and the rooms had ice cold a/c & lcd tvs. the service was excellent and when we needed something we only had to wait a couple of minutes before someone responded :) if your looking for a great hotel with a piano bar to boot this is the place for you. btw- i added some photos so people can see just how beautiful this place really is.

We stayed at this hotel from January 5th to 12th. Eventhough this hotel is new, we were surprised that it work like a well oiled machine. It was our 8th time in Cuba, our expectations regarding the food were not very high. We bought the Privilege package and we were very happy to have done so. Private pool, private bar and lounge, à la carte breakfast. The location of the "privilege" section is also better than the regular section for it is closer to the beach et not as close to the theater and lobby. The best thing about this place is the staff. Everywhere you go on this resort, people go out of their way to make sure you are happy. we especially appreciate Ayda and Jorge who served us every day at the pool bar. After just a few days they knew what we drank and where we were from. Jenna from the lounge where we took breakfast was very nice and above all talking to us in french.
The Oriental restaurant was O.K. and the Gourmet as well. There was a lot of variety at the buffet but it was not very tastefull and it was rather noisy. Our room had two 3/4 bed and not 2 queen bed or a king as mentionned on the hotel's web site, the room was very clean and unlike other places the shower has great water pressure, always good to wash the sand out of your hair! The only downside to our room was that the door had no proper seal around it, therefore the wind blowing (like as if there was a blizard outside) kept us up at night and so did the A/C. We would definitly recommand this hotel and will probably go back.

Dear Guest,

We are very pleased to learn that you enjoyed your stay with us and to read your positive comments on the hotel, its staff and its services.
Rest assure we will pass along our compliments to Ayda, Jorge and Jenna on having a positive effect on your vacation experience.
On a constant basis our Executive chef with the help of his staff is making changes in our buffet offer trying to increment our food variety and improve our selection. We aim to provide our guests with a good F&B offer as an important part of their vacation experience.
Concerning your observation regarding the missing seal at the room door, this is something we have encountered in an small part of our room inventory and we have already asked the construction company to correct this issue. We apologize for any inconveniences due to this,
Once again we thank you for taking the time in sharing your comments and we hope to be able to host you again with us in the not so distant future.

Just returned yesterday from a great week at the El Patriarca. The weather was amazing......hardly a cloud all week! My fiance and I stayed in the Deluxe room Privledge Club. So glad we paid the extra 200 each when we booked. From the AMAZING Butler ROMILLIO, who catered to our every need to the sweetest lady JENNEY in the Privledge Club for private a la carte breakfasts, it was well worth it!! The room was very nice, modern, great A/C and nice and quiet. We thought the food was great and never went hungry. We loved NELSON in the pasta area in the buffet. His spaghetti was to die for, yummy! The beach is soooo gorgeous, lots of chairs available, quiet,. and the water is so clear......beautiful. My only tiny complaints are the rooms are non smoking....we are both smokers......the pools are way too shallow. Great for lil kids but not adults, they should be deeper then they are, but still very nice. We are planning to return to this resort in May to get married, we liked it that much! Overall for the price, this resort is tops. Excellent service by the most friendly people.....we love the Cubans! This was our second time to Varadero in less then a month, just love it there and can't wait till May to return :)

Room Tip: I would recommend staying in the Privledge area.

I went here with my husband for a week. He was a nervous wreck about going to Cuba because typically Cuba is associated with bad food. Lets just say this resort turned him into a believer and a true lover of Cuba.

The resort itself is beautiful - its modern, clean and full of luxury finished. I had the best showers of my life in this resort. I am a sucker for stand up showers with rain shower heads. The room was always spotless, our maid was a sweetheart and we never went short of necessities. When we left her little notes, such as asking for extra bottled water, she always delivered.

The beach is gorgeous - aqua blue waters, beautiful sand, and close proximity to the resort itself. We took the paddleboat and kayaks out a number of times and its just so much fun.

Pool - looked nice and clean and had a swim up. I dont do pools when there's an ocean around. The privilege section has its own pool with its own bar. This is what I would describe as the quiet pool. The main pool is the busier pool but thats not to say they have music blasting from am to pm but that is where they run the activities at different points of the day.

Food - we never went hungry. IS that to say we ate every item of food in every tray, no, but thats the whole idea behind a buffet. They are trying to appeal to different tastes. Besides, why pick something from a tray when you have a fish grill, meat grill, made to order pasta or made to order pizza to choose from at dinner time? Breakfast was the standard omelets, pancakes, toast so I cant see anyone complaining there. The baked their bread daily so it was always fresh. For lunch we would either eat at the snack bar by ordering a pizza, burger or ham and cheese sandwich or we would eat at the beach restaurant. Out of all the meals lunch is probably the most limited but again we always found something to eat and worse case scenario if you really arent feeling the restaurants the burgers, sandwiches and pizza were always available to you from the snack bars.

A la cartes - we tried all three - Italian, gourmet and oriental. The only one me and my husband didnt like but if you read some of the other reviews you would hear the opposite so to each their own. The only honest feedback I can say about the a la cartes is that the meat dishes were very salty eg the steak from the gourmet and the chicken teriyaki from the oriental.

Staff - they were awesome - you could really tell they made an effort to check in on you and see how things were going. We got 2-3 phone calls to our room from someone just to make sure we were happy. Seriously - whens the last time you can say someone did that?

You can tell that this resort is really making an effort to change travellers typical views on Cuban resorts. They are setting the bar high for themselves and they want to be game changers.

If you are one of those people who looks to complain, do yourself a favor, stay home. Case and point some guy who was on our flight and stayed at our resort. He berated the Hola Sun rep on the bus ride TO the resort because the bus was held up due to us waiting on 2 travellers and for her giving her intro speech. Then on the way home he was complaining that the maids are too loud and he could hear them in his room - buddy what are you doing in your room in the middle of the day? Lastly, he berated a different hola sun rep on the bus ride home all because the guy asked for his name so he could check him off the list. When I say berate I mean literally shouting at these people and giving them attitude to the umpteenth level for no legitimate reason other than this guy was a bonafide jerk. People like that are the same
people who leave negative reviews and who cant enjoy themselves in any circumstance.

I hope you enjoy the trip as much as we did. We are already talking about going back.

Room Tip: Do not leave any food or opened drink in to your room. The ants will find it so do yourself a favor...

We stayed here for 7 days at this resort with one kid(11). Excellent service and very friendly people. The buffet was pretty good, although the three restaurants was so-so, but still they are good enough.
The room is very modern style, new equipment where it looks to me that some details are not quite good due to the rush to complete during construction. Again, still I am very satisfied with it.

Just one tip, if there is a big gap around the entry door, and when it is windy, you might hear whistling during night, you can just put used towel around the door.

We just got back last night after a week at the Ocean. There is a lot to like about this resort:

1, It is brand new so all the rooms are in tip top shape
2. Excellent pool
3. Great beach and we could always find lounge chairs and shade
4. Fun entertainment staff at beach and by the pool
5, This is a smaller resort than some of the neighbouring resorts we visited which seemed
massive. We like this as we were close to the both the beach and bars/restraurants.
6. The food was half decent.
7. We used the tennis and exercise club and were happy with both.
8. We really enjoyed the small piano bar and band that played in it.

This is not a luxury resort but what do you expect for $1000 per week all inclusive including flights? We think this is a very good value right now and a very nice place to go to for a week of R & R.
