Papo's House

My husband and I decided to spend Christmas in Cuba and really wanted to experience their lifestyle so we went for a 'casa particular'. But not any casa particular, we were lucky enough to have found wonderful hosts - Yamila, Yuri and their 3 kids. They do everything they can to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. They have such a big heart! Yamila invited us to share their Christmas eve dinner and it was DELICIOUS! Seafood to die for!
They are so friendly and they always have a smile for you. I would recommend their house without any hesitation.
Casa Papo has a very good location in Varadero near the markets and very close to a beautiful park. It is only 5 minutes away from a beautiful and unspoilt beach. It was so relaxing and peaceful (beach wasn't crowded - perfect to chill out) to be in such a beautiful scenery.
We enjoyed our stay very much and hope you will too!

The best asset of this place is it´s location: it is very conveniently situated in the centre of Varadero, just a few meters far from the beach and Varadero's park and about 15 minutes´walk from Viazul bus station. Little supermarket and a pub that is open 24 hours a day are just across the street.
There are 4 rooms in this casa, the one we were staying at was nicely furnished, had a clean and spacious bathroom and a safe. It also had a new A/C and a small fridge. The second room was a lot more simple, A/C was not working at that time, but it had a private living room and kitchen with a microvawe and fridge.
Their breakfast is a litlle bit poor (for Cuban standards), but tasty - the price is 5CUC.
We didn´t dine in the house, but we can warmly recommend the restaurant La Vicaria, which is 15 min walk from this B&B, not far from the Viazul bus station. The food is cheap and very tasty (dinner for 2 persons plus 2 beers and water for only 15CUC)!

This was the first casa we stayed in on our 2 week trip and we really enjoyed our stay there. The house is very clean and the rooms quite spacious. The food was good, we had our first lobster here which was an insane amount but very delicious. Good location, friendly service.

We stayed in Papo's house for 3 nights in Varadero. The location is prefect, just 2 mins walk away from the beach and very close to the restaurants and handicraft market. The room itself was clean & safe (with safebox provided). Breakfast was excellent and we were impressed by the beautiful fruit plate. Yamila speaks good English and is extremely helpful, she arranged the stay in Vinales for us and also took us to Vinales bus stop at 6am in the morning. Many thanks to Yamila!

I've stayed in many casas particulares in Cuba (Playa Larga, Matanzas, Santa Marta). There was nothing special about this one which would encourage me to spend 35 CUC per night when there are much nicer ones out there for 25 CUC per night. Despite confirming my late arrival (after 23:00), I had a lot of trouble actually FINDING Yamilla to even let me in the house - once I managed to find it (not an easy thing to do given the address is not visible from the road). I had booked for 2 nights but left after only 1. When I paid, Yamilla REFUSED to give me a receipt. I wouldn't go back.

The house is next to Beny's and so it has the same very good location. Everything was very clean and spacy ... you have the privacy but at the same time you can ask Yamila everything. She even allowed us to leave our luggage at her house and take a shower in her own bathroom before going to the airport. The breakfast was also really great, fresh fruit, eggs, ham and cheese, home made marmelade ... everything you want.
Thank you again for a very nice experience!

So we arrive and the taxi driver drops us off 2 blocks away because Papo's house doesn't actually list their address despite on the house it's number is 114. Our taxi driver even called and still they don't say hey we're at 114 no instead they say in between this avenue and that avenue; however they are on a regular street, it's not like they are the only one's; there are other houses on the same street, so how would anyone know which was theirs? So finally and I mean finally ... after we walked around the WRONG way a bit we arrive and I tell Yasmilina about the commotion - all she says is everyone knows Papo's house, well clearly NOT everyone. No contrition, nada! So we are off to a not great start. Very nice clean room. Breakfast was good, but again who would have known they served breakie - had to ask. Least friendly and they even have a partition up dividing the front entrance and the rest of the casa, felt very seperate; not at all like the other casa's we visited in Cuba. Will visit Varadero again but not this casa. Advice: look elsewhere until they get the friendly aspect of the business. They treat it like a hotel, (5 rooms) not the experience I was looking for. Truly disappointed was hoping for more and it does have potential but it needs a dose of friendly. It lacks!
