Our trip was from Jan 24 to Jan 31. We had a great week. Yes there definitely is mosquitoes, some are so small you don't know you are getting bites. 3 of our party got a lot of bites but the rest of us only a few. If you want to get good drinks without the lineup go see Alfredo in the little bar off the cigar shop. Although people say the food in Cuba is not good we thought the food here was just fine. Breakfast was pretty much the same every morning but the evening buffet had different things each night. The Japanese restaurant was quite fun and we also enjoyed the Romantic one ( service was superb ). The beach at this resort has a lot of shells in it, we didn't mind it but would have preferred just white sand. There are free banana boats, catamarans and paddle boats rides on the beach for guests. Book them about lunch time for an afternoon ride. We did the Jeep Safari it was fun but if you go bring things for the little kids that are along the sides of the road as the tour jeeps go by. They will smile and wave as you go by. Also we did the Tropicana Varadero it was an adult night out. The performers did a great job and the meal was good but bring a sweater or jacket as everything is outside. Because we were a group of 10 we took a private tour of Havana it was quite interesting. You will see a lot of beggars around but just stay with your group. You can exchange money at the airport but it also can be done at the hotel and the exchange rate it not much difference. Also for those who never travelled to Cuba or had a friend that did bring a few small packages of tissue because off the resort you either pay for toilet paper or there is none in the public restrooms.

We appreciated the newer bus from the airport to the hotel zone. The entry to this new five star hotel was quick and efficient to a clean well-kept room. We converted Can.dollars to CUC (cuban 'tourist" money) at the hotel (its the same rate of exchange as at the Varadero bank). When leaving and trading back you get less for for your CUC . When leaving -Airport has two places to trade back money- outside security zone and inside security zone( inside security zone has food you can buy) then you can trade left over CUC for Cdn $ right before flying.(keep 25 CUC for exit tax). Bring mosquito spray, antibotic cream for mosquito bites. If needed there is a doctor on the 5th floor( we heard $20-30CuC DR. fee + medicine cost) . Pool water is cold;pool ladders have only few rungs and don't reach the bottom ;but the hot tubs are from warm to warmer at night. Azure Atlantic Ocean water is warm and beautiful ,and calm compared to Pacific side of Mexico. Lots of chairs. Long white sandy beach safe for walking-most hotels have security on ocean side.. Have CUC $1 coins for tips (we had 10 to 20 CUC at any one time) for tips at the resort or Varadero or Havana. in buffet there is a large choice of good food and wine and good service ;but coffee was weak; use outside oceanside restaurant for cappachino. Know specialty restaurants menu entrees terms ahead of time. Italian and Continental food and sevice was excellent;didn't try the others. For $5 CUC buses at entrance gate to and back to Varadero-ticket good for all day -on/off. Taxi rates vary per driver and the number of people going (more people the cheaper the rate per person). Havana trip is OK but ask for written Itinerary in case you lose your tour group .. Extra restaurant(good coffee) and ice-cream stand by ocean.Several bars . (Only downside :Always had to ask for extra drinking water; other resorts have a fill -your- bottle- with- water station. ). Night entertainment was very good. Friendly staff throughout.. Work-out station is on top floor or use sidewalks around beautiful grounds for walking. Beautiful quiet place throughout-easy to sleep .Our room had patio door with screens , balconies and ocean view. Had air- conditioning and ceiling fan which worked out great for us. Bottled Rum is same cost in hotel lobby as in Havana.
We are looking forward to returning.

This resort was breathtaking the minute you arrive.
The resort just opened in September 2009 and you can tell.
Everything is very clean. We had great service, by far the best looking resort in Varadero.
As for food, you could tell you were staying at a 5 star. Much better but keep in mind your still in Cuba.
Drinks- Great, lots to choose from including Malibu, Canadian Club and Kaluha.
Ice Cream Parlour as well with Nestle ice cream- very good on a hot day.
Rooms were great as well very clean, big tubs and comfy beds.
All in all we had a great trip, but would not go back to Cuba in February as it was not as hot as I would like.

Hola! We spent Jan. 30 to Feb. 6/10 at this beautiful new hotel, loved it, huge foyer, marble/outside decks, theatre, fun disco, 6 pools, many bars, 4 international restaurants and great staff! All good except that on the second night in the Theatre the mosquitoes were horrendous and I had an allergic reaction, swelled up bad, had to see the doctor and nurse and was treated four days in a row - thank goodness they are right in the hotel, and they took amazing good care of me (for a mere $183. pecos I had four injections of cortizone and antihistimine, yes right into the bloodstream), two creams, penicillin and calamine lotion. And they cleaned and swabbed my legs and arms for four days. Had been there two years ago on the other side of the peninsula, didn't even see one bug! Doctor said the rainy week before caused the mosquitoes, hey just like Winnipeg!!! Anyway if you go, and do go, Cuba is an amazing country with wonderful people, take spray and use it! Also took in the Jeep Safari and Havana, both excellent excursions! Also try Lia Lia Chinese restaurant in Varadero, great food for $10 each!

Room was very nice, large bathroom, couch and chair as well a desk and chair, large balcony. Very nice beach and you can walk for miles in each direction. Buffet restaurant average, Japanese great, Romantico had a great lobster salad for an appetizer although the beef tenderloin ordered was not too tender. Lots of pools and a large hot tub that was actually hot. Good service everywhere. Despite reading several reviews about no internet, there is an internet cafe with 5 computers. You pay $5 CUC for 30 minutes of time. You don't have to use it all at once. It is rather slow but there all the same. You can see the door from the front desk but unless you ask where it is you will likely not find it. Take bug spray for early evening. Take short bus trip to Varadero flea market where prices are excellent and the vendors are not pushy at all! Some very nice restaurants there as well. Felt very safe walking around. The double decker bus runs every half hour from the hotel and is $5 return. You can use your ticket again the same day. Beach bar opened Feb. 7.
