My fiancé and I visited the resort in mid-August and while the resort itself was very well laid out and beautiful, the poor service took away from all of that.

THE GOOD: The resort has a beautiful beach and pool area. There were very few issues getting a lounger on the beach and it was very relaxing. The pool area itself was also relaxing, but could use some improvements (see THE BAD).

We paid for an upgrade (100 CUC) upon arrival and that moved us up to the 4th floor where we had an ocean view. The view from the balcony was impressive and it was a nice spot to relax when in the room.

The gift shop had some nice items and the woman running the shop was very polite and helpful. We purchased several items while we were there.

THE BAD: In most cases, the staff seemed annoyed when we would approach the bar to order a drink, and tipping didn't seem to matter. The employees were very appreciative when you gave them a tip, but would seem to forget you 30 minutes later when you went back for another drink. I refused to tip after the first day since it didn't seem to make a difference.

We also found it strange that the fridge in the room wasn't restocked and we had to call the front desk each time we wanted the drinks replenished.

I enjoyed the food, but would describe it as average. In the buffet area, you would get completely different service depending on who was your server. Some servers would bring your drinks within two minutes. Others would take your drink order and never return.

We got the impression that not much work was done once the pool closed for the night. While sitting by the pool around 9:30am, we watched the pool cleaner walk around the pool and dump buckets of chlorine directly into the pool. We thought it was odd that this wasn't done the night before since the pool closes at 7:30pm.

On our last morning at the resort, we were eating breakfast in the buffet area overlooking the pool. The pool was completely filled with algae (and I mean completely) and we were very surprised that the resort would let that be seen by the guests. Everyone eating breakfast and walking by outside could clearly see the horrible condition of the pool.

This was our first trip to Melia Las Americas and we found out during the stay what the different coloured wristbands mean. Red is for first-time visitors, green is for returning guests and white is for an anniversary. We had thought that since we had red wristbands the staff would at least try a little harder to impress us on our first visit. This wasn't the case.

We weren't looking to be treated like royalty during our trip, we were simply looking for smiles and general courtesy. That was all. Very rarely did that take place. As stated above, we felt like we were interrupting most of the staff if we were ordering a drink or had a question.

I read a few reviews on Tripadvisor about poor service and rude staff. We didn't believe it at the time, but consistently witnessed it first-hand during our stay. We couldn't have been more polite to the employees and received none of that in return.

We did meet one or two very nice employees at the resort and they were an absolute pleasure to deal with. If all employees had treated us as nicely as those staff members did, we would definitely return. It is a beautiful resort, unfortunately, strictly due to the way the staff is unappreciative of the guests we will not be returning.

Hotel is lovely. Stayed in a Bungalow split over two floors. Top floor is the bedroom and bathroom, ground floor has a living space, washroom and kitchen.

The hotel is an all inclusive. The rooms don't really provide much in terms of alcohol, however available free throughout the hotel.

Food in the restaurants are quite simple as well as pool food. Cant really expect anything too high calibre interms of food in Cuba. I generally opted for seafood during my stay as the fish / lobster was beautifully fresh.

The restaurants in the hotel are ok.

The entertainment is what makes the Hotel. Julio one of the entertainers makes you feel very welcome. He makes sure he gets to know you on a personal level always referring me as his 'london friend'. He and the entertainers were definitely the highlight of the stay.
They go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable.

Breakfast service not so good. However the last few days decided to sit on a different for breakfast and the gentleman that was serving me and my friend was amazing. Very fast, efficient and pleasent.

Beautiful clean beach.

Beautiful beach, spotless rooms, great location. Buffet food was good, speciality restaurants were great. Must be booked.

Housekeeping were outstanding, all areas were spotless. Pool was immaculate as was the beach.

10mins from bank /bus stop/small shopping centre. 5Cuban pesos gets you an open day ticket on the open top bus into varedero. A must, great fun way to see round the peninsula and pop into town. Though this is not advertised at the hotel. Bureau de Change at hotel is cash only, no currency card accepted.

Staff at indoor bars are very slow. Only one barman actually serves at a time, though you may see 3 behind the bar. Please sort this out. It's the only thing that lets the resort down. Outdoor bars are well served.

Good couples resort. Entertainment is amazing from the salsa beach bans, opera, string quintet, dancers singers. Very eclectic mix.

We love this hotel, we have stayed here twice and will probably keep staying here. The hotel grounds are lovely, the staff is super friendly and helpful, and it is located in one of the best part of the Varadero beach. There could be some improvements, the food is not great, there is not a lot of variety and it gets repetitive after a few days. The hotel itself could use a little refresher, The entertainment was okay but I wish it would not stop so early and cater to a younger audience since we're not all in our 50s haha. Over all this is a great hotel with a lovely staff!

Room Tip: the bungalows are the best
