“Very Good!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2013

This was our first time in Cuba. We’d stayed in Havana for 3 nights and transferred to Varadero for the relaxing part of our holiday.

We arrived at 1pm – check in was not available until 3pm. The reception staff were quite rude and not particularly helpful. Every question we had for them (not just at our time of arrival but throughout the holiday), they didn’t have an answer or if they did it was vague.

When we eventually got into our room (3111) we were very pleasantly surprised. We’d not paid extra for a sea view room but the view was stunning. We could see out across the golf course and the sea. It was a spectacular view. There was a bottle of Havana Club rum waiting for us. There were 2 smaller beds pushed together to make 1 big bed, but that wasn’t much of an issue for us. The bathroom was lovely, although when we used the shower the pressure was pitiful. We had a few issues with the air con – some nights it would be freezing cold and others it wouldn’t seem to work at all. The maid did a very good job, and left us swans and hearts on the bed every day (apart from 1 when she didn’t clean?). We had some quite strong winds and the back door would make a very annoying squeaky noise which we couldn’t stop. The back door also was difficult to lock/unlock so was left unlocked every day and night.

Mini bar wise, we were told that everything inside was complimentary. There were 2 beers in there – these had bottle caps. There was no bottle opener provided so that was out of the question unless you happened to have a bottle opener or could open it some other way. There was also 1 can of cola and 1 of lemonade. We also had a large bottle of water. The water was replenished every day, but otherwise the fridge was often empty. We couldn’t work out their system for restocking it and ended up buying our own in the shop (which wasn’t particularly cheap!).

The buffet food was mediocre. At first it was very good, but as the holiday went on the food was very samey and we ended up having the same thing over and over again. We were also served raw pork (to the point where blood was coming out of it) and completely raw hamburgers.

There are 4 restaurants and we could eat at each once. The Japanese is a tasting menu. You’re sat around the chef and it’s basically a show and you can watch him cook your dinner. The food was delicious. The next was the seafood, which was also a tasting menu. I’m not keen on seafood but my boyfriend loved it. We had lobster and tuna and other things. Next was the international which again was exceptional. This was a menu where you could choose your own dinner. Very good and for dessert we had crepes which were flambéed in front of us. Last was the Italian which was a slight let down but the food wasn’t bad all in all. My boyfriend had a complaint that there was no ketchup to be seen anywhere.

The drinks are good for the all inclusive. The measures are VERY generous.

There were lots of older couples around (I’m 20 and my boyfriend is 22) so we were often the youngest there.

The beach is lovely, although it does get annoying that people are allowed to go out and “reserve” their sun beds by putting a book on them. Annoying more so when they then don’t turn up until 1pm!

The taxi into Varadero old town is cheap. It cost us 10CUC in a yellow taxi and 15CUC for a Coco Taxi back to the hotel. The town is worth a visit but it’s got a lot of tourist bits there and you do get a bit harassed.

Room Tip: Don't always jump to pay for a sea view room, we had a standard room and we had a beautiful view...

If you are looking for a great hotel in Cuba, Melia las Americas is the best value. They offer free golf lessons to all guests daily. They have the best staff and food. You will not be disappointed. Every restaurant has variety. The fridge in your room is always stocked. The main bar is a great place to meet people from all over the world, and is open 24 hours.

This is my 2nd time to Cuba. 1st time at MLA! This resort is amazing! We arrived Monday November 4th at about 5am. It was a long flight and we were greeted and given our rooms right away. We walked around to see the beautiful grounds. Quiet and tranquil. Off to bed and had a wonderful first sleep. My experience in Cuba before was the food was horrible. Well not here. There was no shortage of fresh delicious food. Anything you would want. The wait staff is pleasant and always smiling! Rosy at breakfast was so great. Dinner Dany has the most infectious smile and Jorge Luis is just like a friend to our group.

Entertainment staff is AWESOME!!!!! Frankie is hands down the best ! He ALWAYs made sure we were taken care of and having fun. He was like he was vacationing with us.

Our house keeper Julia, was so sweet and did a great job making sure we always had fresh towels, water, pop and beer! Loved her little notes. Those are such a nice touch. The day we were leaving, she made sure to see us off before she was done work. Even gave me a warm heart filled hug.

The resort is well maintained, beautiful allocated. Excellent, stunning views.

What really impressed me was the constant presence of the hotel manager. He was always visable and welcoming. Big smile and good mornings, good evenings. He even would pop into the ala carte restaurants to be sure all was good.

I could go on and on and 100% recommend anyone to stay here!!!

Thanks again to all of the staff I met I would for sure consider friends!! <3

My husband and I just returned from a five day stay at this hotel. It was our first time at an all inclusive, so we have nothing to compare it to. Overall, we feel that it was a good experience. Starting with the positives: we had an ocean view room that was clean and comfortable. It was nice to go to sleep and wake up to the sound of crashing waves, and to have the ocean breeze drifting through the room. We feel it is worth the extra money spent to upgrade to an ocean view room. Other positives: the hotel is located right on the beach, which is absolutely beautiful. It was nice to be able to walk out the back door of the hotel and be right on the beach. The grounds of the hotel are very clean and well maintained. The staff obviously work hard to keep the grounds spotless. We loved the Las Americas bar in the main lobby, where we enjoyed coffee every morning before the buffet breakfast and occasional drinks throughout the day. The staff there were wonderful. The food at the buffet restaurant, La Terraza, is adequate and plentiful. The buffet staff are very friendly and helpful. I wish I could say the same for some of the guests, who were pushy and impatient in the food line ups, as if the food was going somewhere and this was their last chance to eat. But that is not the fault of the hotel. We had a great evening at the Japanese a la carte restaurant, Sakura. The chef puts on a great show and the food is tasty. We recommend booking your a la carte reservations as soon as you check in, because the restaurants fill up very quickly. We were unable to get into one of the restaurants we really wanted to experience, Il Limoncello, because it was all booked up by the time we were able to make reservations. Now for the not so positive: I personally found a couple of the front desk staff to be unfriendly and not terribly helpful. I know it must be stressful working at a job where you probably deal with a lot of difficult people, but that is no excuse for rude behaviour. We also received some rude treatment from a staff member at one of the a la carte restaurants, La Robleza, which resulted in us not eating at the restaurant. We had a reservation and arrived at the restaurant 10 minutes early, but the staff member refused to seat us, even though the restaurant was completely empty. He waived us away with his hand and said "Ten minutes!" It looked like no one else was eating at La Robleza that night either, so maybe there are overall problems that need to be addressed. La Cascada Bar needs help. It is not a very inviting atmosphere, and they need to add some variety to their nightly entertainment. I had an unfortunate experience at the office where you access Internet and WiFi. There was a "miscommunication" between me and the woman in the office, who tried to get me to pay 18 pesos for one hour of Internet service. I filed a complaint at the customer service desk, and everything got sorted out, so I ended up only paying 5 pesos for 1/2 hour of Internet service, which is what I should have been charged. One other annoyance was the small amount of toilet paper in our room. We had to call housekeeping at least 2-3 times during our stay to request more toilet paper. We recommend that you bring your own stash of toilet paper, which will also come in handy if you go on a day trip to Havana, where toilet paper availability also seems to be an issue. Overall, our experience at Las Americas was good. There were a lot of positives, but also room for improvement in a few areas. One hidden gem is a beautiful old hotel next door to Las Americas called Manision Xanadu. It was built in 1928 and is absolutely gorgeous. You can go in and look around, and take pictures if you like. You can eat a meal there, and it also has a beautiful roof top bar with a great view, cheap drinks and live entertainment. It was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. If you have never been to Cuba before, it is a beautiful country, and well worth a visit.

Room Tip: Spend the extra money for an ocean view room. Worth every penny.

Just got back from MLA was expecting the worst cause everyone tells you it is Cuba you will starve. It started with loading on the bus heading to the resort some of the places we stopped at let people off where very scary run down this was what we could see from the bus so again wondered what we got ourselves into. When we arrived it looked a lot nicer then we expected and front lobby looked great check in was quick only had about 4 couples get off so not that busy get your wristband and start drinking if you wish. The main lobby has two bars and the buffet is off the main area to the food was good, breakfast was omelette bar eggs bacon home fries croissants everything you are use to and some things that we don't have for breakfast. Lunch was buffet or restaurant by main pool was good swim up bar had grill for toasted grilled sandwiches and fries again you will not starve burgers are good not like ours little different but good The restaurants where also good Italian was lasagna, pizza, spaghetti and international had steak and pork loin with pear sauce and then there was the Japanese and seafood heard they where good. The drinks are premium like they say the beer is crystol and is good had a friend that loves beer and I think he drank a whole keg by end of week, hard drinks where jack daniels whiskey, canadian club whiskey, frozen drinks strawberry daiquiri, pina coladas, vodka and sprite great selection for all inclusive. The resort was beautiful and clean the manager was always around I talked to some of the staff and they really liked this new manager and enjoyed working there if you had any questions he was always around to help. This is not a party place if you are looking for nightlife not a singles place from my opinion lots to do during day but no dance bar just an entertainment area for the shows they put on.

Last week was our 4th trip to MLA and over the 16th to Varadero. MLA is becoming our home away form home now. Mr. Meyer, the new hotel manager appeared to be every where at the same time making sure the service to the guests are impeccable, and they almost are! The highlight of our stay was to see, after a sick leave last year, the two great singers and entertainers Bianka & Giancarlo returning to the Cascada Bar. If you missed their music you can see them on YouTube by searching "Bianka & Giancarlo". We will be back next year for sure.

We have just returned from a Sunwing Golf week at the Melia Las Americas and I'm pleased to report that , having been there last year, that some positive improvements have been made.
The biggest and most notable change is they have a new General Manager, Mr. Bernard Meyer, who arrived 5 months ago to run the operations. Talk about hands on. We were greeted at least once each day at various venue's always wanting to know how we are enjoying ourselves and if there's anything he can do to make our holiday more enjoyable. And there is no language barrier as he speaks 5 languages fluently. Most importantly, the entire staff love him as he is definitely a Team Player and it was obvious in the excellent service and attitude of the staff.
The main Buffet Dining Room offers a fabulous Pasta Station, a Grill Station offering a variety of fish , seafood and meats,a Sandwich Bar, where you can create your own Panini or other types, toasted to your liking. A fresh salad bar as well as a great assortment of imported cheeses.
This is the best you'll find in Cuba. I've been to a number of other properties and none compare to this property.
There is entertainment every day, both daytime and nighttime. There are 4 Bars, one, the Piano Bar is open 24 hrs for both food and drinks( Premium Liquors ). Special thanks to Leslie, Mariella, Yousimi, Freddie and Alberto at the Lobby Bar as well as Yosi and Betty who looked after us daily in the buffet restaurant. You were all fabulous
There are 4 a la carte restaurants as well offering Seafood, Italian,,Japanese and International.menu's. All are excellent.
If you are a golfer, as we are, you can walk to the Clubhouse and they will store your clubs during the week at no charge.
If you are thinking about a holiday in Cuba, I would highly recommend this property.

Room Tip: The 3rd or 4th floor ocean side offer great views. 4407 or 4405.
