This was our first time in Cuba. We’d stayed in Havana for 3 nights and transferred to Varadero for the relaxing part of our holiday.
We arrived at 1pm – check in was not available until 3pm. The reception staff were quite rude and not particularly helpful. Every question we had for them (not just at our time of arrival but throughout the holiday), they didn’t have an answer or if they did it was vague.
When we eventually got into our room (3111) we were very pleasantly surprised. We’d not paid extra for a sea view room but the view was stunning. We could see out across the golf course and the sea. It was a spectacular view. There was a bottle of Havana Club rum waiting for us. There were 2 smaller beds pushed together to make 1 big bed, but that wasn’t much of an issue for us. The bathroom was lovely, although when we used the shower the pressure was pitiful. We had a few issues with the air con – some nights it would be freezing cold and others it wouldn’t seem to work at all. The maid did a very good job, and left us swans and hearts on the bed every day (apart from 1 when she didn’t clean?). We had some quite strong winds and the back door would make a very annoying squeaky noise which we couldn’t stop. The back door also was difficult to lock/unlock so was left unlocked every day and night.
Mini bar wise, we were told that everything inside was complimentary. There were 2 beers in there – these had bottle caps. There was no bottle opener provided so that was out of the question unless you happened to have a bottle opener or could open it some other way. There was also 1 can of cola and 1 of lemonade. We also had a large bottle of water. The water was replenished every day, but otherwise the fridge was often empty. We couldn’t work out their system for restocking it and ended up buying our own in the shop (which wasn’t particularly cheap!).
The buffet food was mediocre. At first it was very good, but as the holiday went on the food was very samey and we ended up having the same thing over and over again. We were also served raw pork (to the point where blood was coming out of it) and completely raw hamburgers.
There are 4 restaurants and we could eat at each once. The Japanese is a tasting menu. You’re sat around the chef and it’s basically a show and you can watch him cook your dinner. The food was delicious. The next was the seafood, which was also a tasting menu. I’m not keen on seafood but my boyfriend loved it. We had lobster and tuna and other things. Next was the international which again was exceptional. This was a menu where you could choose your own dinner. Very good and for dessert we had crepes which were flambéed in front of us. Last was the Italian which was a slight let down but the food wasn’t bad all in all. My boyfriend had a complaint that there was no ketchup to be seen anywhere.
The drinks are good for the all inclusive. The measures are VERY generous.
There were lots of older couples around (I’m 20 and my boyfriend is 22) so we were often the youngest there.
The beach is lovely, although it does get annoying that people are allowed to go out and “reserve” their sun beds by putting a book on them. Annoying more so when they then don’t turn up until 1pm!
The taxi into Varadero old town is cheap. It cost us 10CUC in a yellow taxi and 15CUC for a Coco Taxi back to the hotel. The town is worth a visit but it’s got a lot of tourist bits there and you do get a bit harassed.
