This has been our most enjoyable stay in Cuba out of 7 different resorts. The location Is great (walk to golf & plaza), all rooms are very close to the beach and it's not too far into town. We found the food to be superior and of a better quality then past trips. Lots of seafood choices & a good variety every night. Lunch at the buffet is also very good but fajitas at the pool snack bar were tops. We also had a very good meal at the Italian resturant. Room service is readily available and was delivered all times within 20 mins.

There are four pools at the resort and steps within all rooms. With the abundance of pools you are going to always have a good spot. The quality of the beach in Varadero goes without saying.

Highlights for us were the gourmet resturant, had a very tasty meal there and we're blown away by the ambiance and the very high level of service. It was akin to going to a high end steakhouse. The staff should b commended. My wife really enjoyed Tai Chi in the mornings with Lazaro Reyes. She being Chinese & a long time practicer of Tai Chi was pleasantly surprised to find a knowledgable instructor. The resort has a great asset in Lazaro. Our room was very spacious and clean. Bonus was hot water on demand. We have stayed at other resorts that did not have this luxury. In general the staff at Las Americas are very professional and a cut above other resorts. I think this is a case of the cream rising to the top.

Overall, the resort offers a quiet and relaxing environment that is a cut above most other Cuban resorts. We can back after the week with no complaints and smiles on our faces. Looking forward to going back nxt year!!!

We went here as part of a 2 centre break, the second centre being Havana. For what we wanted which was a rest, some post christmas sun and heat it was perfect. the drinks are plentiful the beach great and the staff really friendly. Mary in the buffet restaurant was always there with a smile and Ariel and the entertainment team even managed the impossible and taught me to dance.

the buffet is plentiful but often the same...we got to go two of the restaurants - the fish one and the a la carte. its worth making these bookings when you get there as there is a special system which to this day i don't understand.

good entertainment at night. if you like a coffee best way to get a nice one is at the lobby bar. it will be a well speant cuc tip.

the massage here was not the best feature of the hotel, but we would go back again to the hotel as it was a good choice.

My husband and I have had the pleasure of vacationing at Melia Las Americas many times and I cant imagine going anywhere else. Although you can rate this hotel on a 1-5 scale and acknowledge that a 5 can be interpreted many ways, our experience is always a 5. The staff is amazing and whether you are dealing with Daniel who greets you at the main doors, or Battista, Carlos, Sergio and Dayron looking after the pools, they will always go above and beyond. You can always count on Mary and Packard serving a perfect lunch at the pool bar. Mercedes, Enriques, and the other buffet staff will always take care in your special service. The GM Stefano has spent the last 3.5 years making great improvements to the hotel, food, and staff to ensure guest can always enjoy their vacations. A variety of activities are available if you choose to participate or you can simply relax on a beautiful beach. The golf program is extremely well run and the coordination between the hotel and the golf course is outstanding!! Rey, Dayanet, and Elizabeth work very closely with Richard, Victor, Eduardo and Choppy to make your golf experience pleasurable and memorable.
If you are looking to enjoy the best mojito in Cuba, be sure and visit the upstairs bar at the Xanadu Mansion and enjoy a spectacular sunset with Guzman and the staff.

Hotel is known as one of the best in Cuba therefore can not imagine myself what is the average one. In european standards couldn't say that this hotel is something more than average although it has direct access to the beautiful beach where you can enjoy yourself by joining into daily activities with some other participants, drinking fresh coconut milk straight from the palm tree or mojito served from one of the beach bars. The biggest plus is that only people over 18 years old are permitted to stay at this premises, however there was always a group of people utterly drunk, due to fact that this is all inclusive resort and some tourists find it really difficult to reach their limits, especially those from Russia.
B-fast, lunch and dinner buffets are huge but really limited and poor quality salads and fruits but this is common problem in Cuba. Fresh veg and fruits are not easy to find in the country and they are very expensive. Some tourists here on tripadvisor were happy with assortment of salad but let me tell you this, plain lettuce,cucumber,5 different types of beans, corn and shredded carrot thats all they had,so you judge yourself if this is good assortment.
The worse part of this hotel was service in the buffet restaurants. Everybody expects to be tipped even when you being serve simple coffee, then when you go to order pancakes another tip has to be given, then you ask for omelette, once more you need to tip it etc, etc. not mention when you go to the bar for an espresso or cocktail! So you are ending your day by giving away easily about 15 dollars just for the tips! Of course tipping is not a must but dare not to give it,next day you'll have your b-fast without coffee.

Room Tip: Aim for the rooms on the highest floors then you'll get really spectacular ocean view.

We arrived at Melia Las Americas fairly late in the evening on 29 Dec after 10 hr flight from the UK, a long wait on the transfer bus, followed by a 2.5 hr transfer. We were very tired when we arrived but were shown to our room very quickly. Unfortunately, having paid for a seaview upgrade we were disappointed to look out and see a lot of ugly concrete between us and the sea. The room they gave us was 2306. We asked if it was possible to move rooms to either a higher floor or a golf course view but were told that we would need to wait until the next day to see what could be done. Not surprisingly the hotel was completely full over the holiday period. The buffet was still open when we arrived so we had a bite to eat and retired to bed.

The next morning we were told that at 2pm we could move rooms and we were given a room with a lovely view of both sea and golf course (3110). The staff member who helped us was very understanding and helpful. Ordinarily I wouldn't worry to much but we were celebrating and wanted the trip to be special. The room generally was in good condition. The bathroom probably did need updating but everything was clean, the bed was really comfortable, the air conditioning was quiet and efficient and the maids were lovely and helpful. The minibar had no more than a couple of beers and cans of soft drinks but these were replenished each day as was the large bottle of mineral water. The maids left us notes on the day before their working block ended which was useful for us to know so that we didn't end up tipping the wrong one after they had changed over. They clearly rely on their tips to supplement their very low income so we were very happy to show our appreciation.

One of the first things to do after breakfast on our first morning was to make our reservations for the speciality restaurants. We waited almost an hour in the queue to do this and although we didn't get much choice about where to eat on which day we did achieve a reservation for each of the 4 remaining nights we were there so experienced all 5 restaurants including the buffet.

We had really good meals at 3 of the 4 speciality restaurants. Our meal on New Years Eve was disappointing. The seafood restaurant was a set menu for the gala dinner and unfortunately, none of the courses were to to our taste. The portions were so generous that the richness of the food made it necessary for us leave a lot of what we were given which left us feeling very guilty and ungrateful for knowing that a lot of premium food and effort had gone into preparing the feast. There was loads of entertainment on New Years eve with a pool party with a live band, live music in all the restauarants. There was lots of dancing which probably went on until the early hours. Unfortunately, still suffering from the time change we bearly made it to midnight. We would have loved to have made the most of the festivities.

Back to the food generally, we were very happy with the presentation and selection of the food. If we were to make one criticism it would be that more seasoning needed to be used in everything to bring out the flavours. Everything from the scrambled eggs to the rice side dishes were lacking in flavour. Vegetables were few and far between but fruit was plentiful.

The pool areas and the beach were well managed and we didn't have a problem finding beds where we wanted them except on one day when the beach was too cold to sit on due to the wind. Then we had to wonder around in order to find somewhere that wasn't shaded by the building. Beach towels are found in your room and you hold onto them for the whole duration, changing them for clean ones when necessary. This is a very good policy as it helps avoid unnecessary laundering which often happens these types of reserts. The beach was white, powder sand, lined with palm trees. Beautiful! The sea was rough for a couple of days so no swimming was recommended during this time.

The staff at pool bar (n particular Raul) were very helpful and friendly and we were always served promptly as we also were at the main looby bar. We did tip from time to time but to be honest they didn't favour those who tipped over those who didn't. They didn't expect it and were always very appreciative. We had no problems whatsoever with slow service for drinks. All drinks seemed to be included in the all inclusive, even though we had been told on arrival that premium drinks and champagne/cava was chargeable. You could order cava by the glass with no charge and we saw Bombay Saphire gin being served so I'm not sure how "premium" it needed to be before there were charges. We drank the house wine by the glass with dinner mostly which was very nice Chilean wine. The only wine we didn't like was the one selected for the New Year gala dinner. One night in the Italian restaurant we ordered a bottle of Spanish Rioja at a supplement of 15 cuc which was nice treat but not really necessary.

The hotel is located next to a shopping plaza and the tourist bus stops outside the hotel every half an hour. The bus does a complete loop of the peninsula. For 5 cuc each (equivalent to 5 USD) you can hop on the open top bus and take a trip to downtown Varadero and the ticket is valid all day so you use the same ticket for your return. Downtown is well worth a visit with lots of arts and crafts to buy at the flee market. We felt very safe and we didn't feel pressured or hassled at all while we were there. We didn't stay for the evening so have no idea how lively it would be in the evening. I would imagine the town is suffering from the All Inclusive culture so it may not be lively at all.

We booked our holiday with Virgin Holidays and the rep, Leonardo, was very helpful and had a very good presence. Had we had any problems he would have been there to sort things for us.

Our overall impression of this hotel was actually better than we had expected. We have been to a number of all inclusive resorts in the Caribbean and whilst this wasn't the best we have been to, this was excellent value for money (or it would have been if it wasn't New Year) and we really enjoyed our stay.

We would recommend this for adults who either wish to play golf (the golf course is stunning) or adults who like to be in a child free zone.

Thank you to the hotel staff and the Virgin staff for our lovely holiday in Cuba.

Room Tip: Don't worry about paying for an upgrade to a sea view room. Rooms on the back can apparently st...

I don't usually write long reviews but this stay most certainly deserved some praise! We thoroughly enjoyed out trip. This was our second visit to this hotel and my third to the island. I can tell you, we really enjoyed visit this week

The last time we visited in 2011....we had a few minor criticisms. I have been to another hotel in Cuba before we visited Melia. The food at Melia las americas was far better than the food I had eaten at other Cuban hotels I had stayed at before. I am of Asian descent and --- how do I say it politely......I feel food should require some flavor. During our first visit....I found myself requesting the addition of anything....jalapeños, black peppers just to get beyond the often bland food. I got fed up with food early in our vacation. The staff were as accommodating to me as possible, but they could only add what they had on hand.

NOW the GOOD NEWS...

I can tell you with great confidence, improvements have been made it those issues and we were VERY pleased with the food during our second visit. There were numerous spices/sauces available to add a little 'heat' to the food. You can ask for chili, garlic, pesto, etc to be added to pastas, omelets, and any grilled items we requested! The fish was amazing!!!!! The food was FABULOUS! The food staff were so accommodating and even knew before I asked....."... hot señora?". My husband often teased me..."I hope they are talking to you about the food!!"

The other issue that has been improved from out last visit was the guidance. Last year I was uncertain of where to go and what do to. This time, as soon we arrived. A wonderful gentlemen sat our entire arrival group down. He gave us a few minutes to catch our breath and guided us through some hotel specifics. They brought us a nice welcome drink....fresh guava juice. Then they told us how to book reservations in the four special restaurants and where the buffet was and hours.

Since we arrived around 12 ish, our room wasn't available until 3. They gave us a complimentary room to change our clothes and a special place where we could store our bags. We were told that we should check in with them before 3pm just in case our room was available early.

We were not able to book restaurant reservations until we had a room number (this is one place that might need some improvement in process! We got our room at 1:00 but the lady who was supposed to book our reservations was not there until 1:30. When she did arrive she proceeded to ignore us for about ten minutes while she talked to another staff member. She didn't even acknowledge out existence nor did she smile!!!!! They she proceeded to tell us when and where we going to eat. There are four a la carte restaurants and you are only able to eat at each once during a once week visit. Now, it was a Saturday.....most people arrive on the island Friday, Saturday or Sunday. How is it possible for everything to book up that fast?????

She proceeded to tell us that the earliest we could eat was 10pm at the French restaurant that night ....who eats that late? Then any other place we requested she would say "no...here is what you must do!!" This happened several times and she just stared at us over her glasses in a very condescending manner.

Finally, when we got our reservations, our mood was not pleasant. It turned out she treated everyone this way! Many of the guests nicknamed her the a la carte nazi (nod to Seinfeld). Okay, once we get over that hiccup....the rest of the stay was delightful!

Rooms were clean and had everything we needed. Might suggest place to hang clothes/swimsuits to dry outside. My swimsuit was often wet after the evening....luckily I brought two!

The staff were always so helpful and considerate. No one asks for tips...but please do be generous when someone does something for you! . The staff work so hard and truly appreciate any tips you give.

It has been a month since our return. We are still happy from our trip. We loved our stay!

I want to mention a few very special staff members and how they made our stay wonderful. I do apologize if I unintentionally misspelled or forgotten your name any names.

Entertainment staff
Yuslay- thank you for getting us so involved in the activities and always finding me and my husband to participate! Also, you are a great salsa dance teacher! You are a beautiful person! Love the trivia and music competitions....especially the the "muscle man" secret book question!!!!
Ariel - you are a great dancer...thanks your for dance lessons
Oly- such a sweetheart; adorable and beautiful person
Frankie- loved the artery lessons and excellent coconut thrower (to clarify....this was a contest).
Javi- great smile and attitude
Guabo - great dancer
Julio- He is the hotel showman and hype guy! Really knew how to make people laugh! great dancer and such a funny guy. Great spirit and wonderful legs when he dressed up as a woman!

Housekeeping
Odalyis- loved all the towel creations you made for us! Also for getting our washroom light fixed without us having to ask. The light kept pulsing like a strobe light..I had to close my eyes while I showered that morning....felt like I was in a disco! By the time we returned from breakfast...it was fixed! Thanks to maintenance staff as well.
Margarita (younger lady)- thank you for your lovely smile.

Chefs
Erich - amazing chef in the Terrazzo Buffet! Always made sure we had enough and cooked things nice and spicy for us! You made our dining a pleasure!
Aldo- thank you for making our breakfasts so pleasant and we loved your amazing smile and jokes

Servers
Manuela - such a sweet and efficient lady!
Betty- beautiful smile and kind eyes!
Mercy (two of them)- quick and kind service.
Nancy- thank you for always bringing me a plate of delicious guava and other tropical fruits every morning you were there!

Bartenders were always so wonderful and always had a nice smile. Were happy to help create a nice variety of non alcoholic drinks for my husband and to accommodate my food allergies!
Rosanna
Ley
Annabel
Leslie
Mariela? (lobby bar.... hair was always in a high tight bun....you were delightful).

Areas for improvement!

Change your restaurant booking system or get a better person to do the job. The lady you have there really put everyone in a bad mood.

The last time I visited, you offered yoga and Pilates. this time there was a different type of yoga with a different instructor. No offense to the lady we had this time...just a comment that this was not true yoga. The last time time, I really felt a good stretch and relaxed....this time it felt like geriatric stretch? No worries....I decided to do some yoga on my own and felt fine! I really liked the yoga guru instructor you had last time! Just a suggestions for further improvement!

Thank you for a wonderful holiday!
