“GREAT RESORT,GREAT SERVICE”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 23, 2011

Me and my partner went to club kawama from march 12-17 dont listen to the bad comments of this resort, ok it is a little old but well kept and the food was great remember "CUBA RIGHT" so if you are looking for a KEG or a KELSEY's keep looking. The resort staff were so considerate the bartenders and waiters were awesome, if you go and eat at the buffet look for a waiter called "LEO" his is awesome the best you will never find such a great and considerate person and at the bar look for IVAN in the main lobby awesome people and for the rest they were also good people remember a tip goes a long way and these people dont make a pile of money so any grattitude gets remember they dont forget you, the weather was super the beach was clean and the ocean was super!!! Remember this is a 3+ but you get treated like you were on a five star. RECOMMEND TO ANYONE LOOKING FOR AN AFFORDABLE PLACE TO GO THIS IS THE ONE!!! The a LA CARTES the best one to try is the continental.

We really liked the layout-- lots of room, low buildings, uncrowded clean beach-- but that's about it. The food was okay and the Gran Canal restaurant the best. We had breakfast at the very uncrowded modern restaurant at the West end We had the bottom of a 2 unit blue building with a view of the beach and almost right on it, which was great. But we did not have hot water for 5 days despite constant reports about the problem. Staff were not particularly friendly with one or two exceptions. You are in the tourist business, folks, so crack a smile. We tipped well and spoke Spanish too.
Generally run down-- could be spruced up.
This could be a great spot if it were spruced up, better managed, and more friendly and helpful.

I went for a week stay at Kawama with a friend, and it was both of our first times in Cuba despite being frequent travellors. We had a wonderful time in the country and at the resort, the Cubans are so lovely. We went with open travelling minds, because many people often forget that you are visiting a developing foreign country. The resort facilities and buildings are kept clean although they are older. This was the original resort built in Varadero so it has a very large prime beach location, far nicer than the beaches at the 5 star resorts on the secluded end, which some don't even offer their own section of beach. The hotel staff were friendly and gracious when accepting gifts and tips, and always remembered those hotel guests who left them the smallest of gestures (a peso or Dollarstore gift item). The club activities were really fun, from aquasize in the afternoon, to spanish and salsa lessons, to the evening dance and singing acts (which were stunning). The food was Cuban buffet food, maybe not what we're used to in our over-processed diet, but they do the best with available resources. It broke my heart to see all the food going to waste on plates from guests or people commenting negatively to the food staff, so shocking on their part. For a change go to KiKis just off of the resort; the meal for 2 of us was always under $20, and that included a starter, a large entree and a few drinks - literally a minute away. Try the mojitos and pina coladas off resort a few times too - they are made fresh and delicious. The alcohol was great at the resort too, endless supplies of everything, with things running out sometimes late in the morning (3-4am), big deal right? The Cristal Cuban beer is delicious, and so too is the rum obviously. Do a few tours and get off of the resort, Cuba is very safe especially compared to Toronto and other major Canadian cities. There are beautiful markets within walking distance with local crafts; the markets in Varadero are much nicer than Havanna as you will not get hasselled by the vendors as it's geered for tourism. There is a double decker bus for tourists that runs from 9am to 9pm everyday, and it's $5 a person and you can use it all day and hop on and off... There are also horse drawn carriages, bubble taxis and retro car taxis, which were all really fun but pricey if used all the time. The dance clubs are great, Club Havana and Club International are good times for young people. Cubans aren't allowed to enter a hotel night club on their own, so they wait outside to go in with people. We had no problem signing them in, they are polite and kind and just want to dance and talk to the tourists - and they are GREAT dancers! Go and enjoy your trip, I promise you'll want to go back!

We just came back from Club Kawama,DON'T BOOK THIS PLACE. Before I book a place I read comments from here, many I take with a grain of salt and balance out good and bad.there is always someone who will find either in a place, right. But no kidding this place was a dump.there rooms were horrible-curtains looked to not have been washed for about 20 years, paint drippings through out them. The chairs must have been used to stand on when painting as they too had painting on them. The shower curtain kept falling of the wall as to the towel racks, the pillows were like pillowcases stuffed with laundry.I tried to not even think of the state of the mattress. When I first saw the room I started to cry to think we had a week to stay/sleep in this place.I asked at the front desk x2 but they said they had no rooms, were over booked??? Even when we arrived at 10:30am there was not room for us we sat on the beach til 4:30 when a room was ready.
As to the food,we barely ate for 4 days the food was so terrible and they just kept reserving the same thing-if it was weiners for lunch it was weiners on onions for supper. The staff seems to be terribley unhappy, barely a smile-we would greet people with a smile and hola and barely a nod in return. If you did not ALWAYS tip, they almost ignored you.At dinner one night a lady threw up next to us and the waiter just kept on doing his thing-no clean up-we left.By the 5 day we started to eat out, otherwise ate papaya, cukes and toast. The smell was not to pleasant in the buffet hall.
Overall,we tried to be positive-cause we were in the sun +30 not - 30.Atlantic Ocean is cold there at this time of year.
Oh the safety box iin your rooms comes with a charge?? but use it.Our maid was great but a couple we meet from Alberta had cologne stolen from their room, and a gentleman had his hearing aid stolen too.
Overall this was a disasterous trip from......maybe one day we will get the braver to return to Cuba but as to now-never.
Sorry for the bad report-usually give good ones but this one deserves to be cloesd down.

Our initial room at check-in was #1402 and it was not acceptable. The next morning they changed our room to #2502 and it was great. There are over 40 buildings in this resort and they vary greatly in desirability and location. Our Room-Maid could not have been better. Our room was freshly made every day to a very high standard. The restaurants have something for everyone, just don't expect Holiday Inn food, try different things. Our favorite restaurant is Gran Canal, don't miss it. The location is in walking distance to the markets of Varadero. Yes this Hotel is old and showing it's wear, but it does have character and is a great value, if you get the right room.
