Looking for a relaxing all-inclusive resort, we finally settled on Sol Palmeras, taking a room in the actual hotel (not a bungalow). All the staff were very nice and helpful, and always seemed happy to talk with us. The food in the buffet is not exceptional, but not shoddy either. A feature of this hotel we really liked were the many different restaurants of all cultural cuisines offered, which a reservation had to be made in advance. With a large beach lot, a swimming pool, and many planned activities this was definitely a good-value resort for our week-long stay in Cuba.

This review is pretty late as we went in May but for those wondering if this resort is worth it, I am writing this review. My family of 5 went May 8-15. We had been to Cuba before in August - big mistake way too hot and the amount of mosquitos it was unbearable - May is definitely better as far as weather goes. Last time we stayed at the Sol Sirenas and while it was OK it wasnt worth the price. The Sol Palmeras was recommended by the travel agent and many people on our bus had been there before said we wont be disappointed which was true. The resort was beautiful. Rooms were nice. We were situated in the bungalows which is perfect for a family that does want to be stuck in hotel room next to noisy neighbours - the disadvantage is the walking but our family enjoys the walking so its not an issue. The bungalows have a main bedroom with a king size bed or two twins stuck together. THen a living room with a roll out couch and an option for a roll away bed which accomodated the kids for us. It worked out fine. I cant say the beds were that comfortable but it suited our needs. THere was a fridge filled with bottled water, pop and beer. These only get filled 2x on your trip. One thing i didnt like about the bungalow was there were no fans for the washroom so if it got too hot you could only leave the full size window open. We did this and on the 2nd night our toiletry items were stolen which was a pain. The hotel apologized for this but it could have been avoided if there was a simple fan or attleast bars on the windows to prevent theft. I have to also say I was disappointed that the resort did not compensate us as promised. we had to buy toothbrushes, toothpaste from the resort shop ourselves. Almost $30 CUC for the items we needed which was crazy.
The resort overall was very clean which i appreciated. The food was alright - nothing great - infact bland but my family was prepared we bought our own spices learning from our mistake last time so once there was flavour the food was fine. There are nice restaurants to choose from only 2 can be booked each day - we tried the steak house. Service was slow - steak very hard. Mexican food - I dont think you can call it Mexican. Italian was by far the best. The buffet was actually the best place to eat as there were enough items to choose from. We tipped the servers at the beginning so every meal a table was waiting for us which was very convenient. And all the servers go out of their way to help you they really deserve tips or gifts if you can give. THe beach was great towards the main part of the resort if you walked towards the sides the beach was very rocky. Chairs were hard to come by and i still dont understand the whole point of reserving chairs if you are never going to use them. Pools were nice - i think they were salt water so it was great swimming. Entertainment was Ok - I know the team worked hard but i never seem to know where and when the entertainment was going on. The signs that were posted told days and times but I guess no one ever stuck to that. I didnt actually see there the kids play area was the whole time we were there but my kids still enjoyed the resort. No crepes bar as in other resorts but an ice cream stand. Only disadvantage were the hours that they were open and once the ice cream ran out they closed early. I don't understand why they didn't restock. Off the resort its very safe so we did a day trip snorkelling - we did not book through the resort or travel agent - just speak the cab drivers on the street and they will give you the ins and outs to get a good deal. We weren't disappointed - well worth the money we saved. We also did an underground cave tour. That was amazing - again we paid a quarter of the price of the resort tours. We hired an amazing driver to take us around and honestly felt like he was part of our family during our stay. Overall the resort is only as good as you are willing to enjoy it. Was it perfect or the best place we have stayed no - but the people are so friendly and our attitude was to enjoy everything the good and the bad and thats why i think this place is definitely worth coming back to.

Sol Palmeras could do with a revamp in places, and indeed that was happening whilst we were there, e.g. constuction of new customer services in the lobby, re-laying slabs around the pool surround, and painting the pool surround during our stay. Restaurants: Chinese and Italian were the best. Steak in the steak restaurant was one of the worst I've ever had but a couple who went a couple of days later said theirs was excellent, so maybe I was unlucky. Beach is good, found it best to go left to get away from the crowds. Sunbeds reasonably easy to get provided you were up and out by 07:30, or about 08:30 if wanted one round the pool. Room OK but nearest lift and the adjacent stairs smelt like a fish market - it was above the kitchens! Fantastic atrium, always cool. Bars were also good. Noticeable that the waiters paid you much more attention if you gave them a tip. Maid excellent. Hardly anyone's mobile phone worked and phoning from the hotel was VERY expensive. Trip into Havana was good, though commentary by the tour guide was very politically motivated. Enjoyed trip to old sugar factory and train ride (though more politics from guide). On way home, airport staff tried to make us pay an extra 25CUCs by pretending we only handed over 25, not 50, with our two passports. Suggest only hand over one at a time but it took over 3 hours to get through airport on way home as queues horrendous and they are so slow. Had no time to visit duty free and plane late taking off as a result of delays to all.

The staff was amazing, the hotel excellent, the location amazing, the food very good and fresh, and the entertainment awsome. Sol Palmleras and the Riu Cancun are my favorite destinations.
I also would like to take the opportunity to thank Osmay Cabrera for his excellent service, his extensive knowledge of Varadero and surroundings, his help, his good humour and friendly personality. Dealing with Osamy was a pleasure.

We will be back as soon as we can.

My wife and I stayed at the Sol Palmeras for the first two weeks in June. We had a bungalow which was a short walk from the main hotel. Yes it is true that some of the bungalows were some way from the main hotel, those in the 300 to 500 area are too far for people who don't want to do a lot of walking. Ours was a mid point bungalow and very nice and quiet with a nice sitting room, bathroom and bedroom - but if you want to be in the middle of the action then the hotel or one of the closer bungalows would be better for you. The beach was very good with plenty of beach loungers and enough shade for those who get up at a reasonable time to claim rights to one of the palm leaf palapas'. There were beach activities which the staff worked very hard to get people involved in + the obligatory water sports at an additional cost. There was a beach restaurant/cafe which could have been bigger but provided a good enough service. The Pool area was also good and provided enough activities for all. If you just wanted to relax there in the shade then there was an area between the pool and the beach with hammocks and beach beds situated among the palm trees. There were also Jacuzzis near the Chinese Restaurant in the bungalow area but due to the distance from the main hotel they were not that well used. The main hotel had a lively bar area with music in the evening, an internet room, two shops and a theatre and of course the main buffet restaurant. The food was catered for by other restaurants which specialised in Steak, Mexican, Italian and Chinese, all offered a nice change from the main buffet food. There were shows every evening performed with a great deal of professionalism by entertainers who were obviously committed to their art. Overall the staff were generally very helpful although some were only helpful once they had been tipped, but those people were very few. Cuba is a third world nightmare to live in for the cuban people but you will be well looked after at Sol Palmeras as long as you go with an open mind and a patient heart. I had a very good holiday at this hotel i would expect that if you go there then you will too.

We knew this hotel would be vastly different from the Nacional in Havana. Being overwhelmed with the history, loving the people and surroundings of Havana, it was a little bit of a culture shock when we arrived at Sol Palmeros. It takes a couple of days to find your way around the massive complex.
As it was our honeymoon, there was a bottle of champagne and some chocolates for our arrival.
Our maid was really friendly and made swans, hearts and patterns with our fresh towels each day.
As with the other recent reviews, I totally agree with trying to book the "a la carte" restaurants in the morning, only they are not quite how we determine "a la carte" but prefered them to the cattle market buffet hall.
The beach was absolutely beautiful, if you walk a little further to the left theres a nice secluded little spot that all you can see is sea, sand and palm trees. I haven't swam in the sea since 1986 but the water here is like a warm bath, and so clear its totally glorious. The little fish swim around you.
We really didn't want to come home at all.
