“Okay, but not out of this world fantastic”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

We just got back from this resort. It was a good time - the staff were friendly but as another reviewer said - some are great, some are indifferent. Drinks were a little too booze heavy for my taste. In general, the resort i okay. The rooms were sort of clean - not swept terribly well, but I wasn't too worried about that - the bed had clean sheets! The only major complaint I have is the noise level in the evening. Horribly noisy with no quiet areas to sit at unless you want to sit in beach chairs ... would have liked more tables and chairs with lighting outside to get away from the noisy disco and band. I will not come back to this resort for this very reason. Also, the outside bar could use a lot more seating ...

It is a 4 stars hotel but includes all the facilities you may need. The food is well served and the rooms are clean and comfortable.

The internet room is always busy, but sometimes you can get a free computer to use at night.

JUST GOT BACK ..This was my 3,rd time in Varedero and my 2,nd time at this hotel LOVED IT.
If you are looking for large spacious modern rooms , the finest food in the Carribean , amazing shopping deals... then Cuba may not be your thing anyway . ( you must understand the Cuban history ) But if you are looking for a GREAT HOLIDAY EXPERINCE in a more or less underdeveloped part of Spanish speaking country with an AMAZING BEACH and a HOTEL that REALLY CARES about you this is it.
This hotel caters to a very International crowd with 80 % Spanish speaking from all over... ( no Americans yet ) Lots from Argentina . Always has great activites with outstanding entertainment. A mature crowd with no loud frat boys guzzling beer on Daddys coin which we have all seen to much in the Carribean.
It is in a great location about 15 minutes from Varedero and has a free train that runs back and forth from the hotel to Plaza Americas.
You can take the double decker tourist but for $5 cuc ( $5.50 Canadian ) for the day and travel into town and like we did stay on it and get to view the resorts up and down the entire peninsula before heading back to Sol Palmeras.
I would like to thank all the staff for making us feel like family again with special mention to Idelmiss and Mayline in the buffet . Robertico who always filled my glass at the bar and to a woman named Nivea.
Took my lady who was on crutches on her first Cuban adventure and her crutches broke 2.nd day in.
The hotel lent us a wheelchair and NIVEA on her TIME OFF had a friend make her parts for the crutches with extras at no cost which got her in and out of the water , shopping in town , ready to dance ( lol )...wow....God bless you Nivea.

Got back this morning. This resort is nice and has all the amenities you would need...gorgeous beach! Here's our opinion/comments:

Pros --

Good Location (close to Plaza Americas) with free train ride just a few minutes.

Bungalows are nice, private and roomy, with your own deck.

A number of outstanding bartenders around the pool bar especially.

An outstanding friendly gardener working the grounds (brought me flowers every morning while I had coffee on our front deck)...love this guy!

Ice Cream Lady very friendly!

Pool area is very nice.

Tons of activities on this resort daily.

Lots of food and drinks available.

Maids keep the room clean daily.

A few guys operating the beach area activities were awesome characters!

Good regular transportation into Varadero town.

Our favorite a la carte restaurants: Mexican and Chinese.

Good surf 'n turf at the seafood a la carte restaurant...but waiter was outstanding...best we've probably had in 20 years anywhere!

Had a late plane out and resort allowed us to use ALL facilities after check out.

Cons --

Not all the people were as friendly as we expected. Some VERY friendly and outstanding people, but a significant number of indifferent behaviors out there at least in terms of our expectations.

Toilet paper seems to be a premium item. I had to call the front desk 3 different days because the maid didn't leave any toilet paper when she cleaned the room. (Maid kept the room clean though and nice notes, flowers, and towel swans).

Steak in steakhouse a la carte was pretty bad.

We booked 2 bungalows and the safes didn't work in either of them (come on, Sol Palmeras, security is a big thing for tourists). My husband had LOTS and LOTS of money....LOTS...the Manager who remembers this will probably have a good laugh!

Cups for drinks are very small. We liked to sit out on our deck periodically during the day and we didn't want to have to go back and forth for a little plastic cup every day. We ended up buying liquor at Plaza America to stock our room fridge for those times.

Overview:

Resort is recommended. They do go out of their way for the most part to make your trip a good experience. Bring mugs! The drink glasses are small and they will fill up mugs for you. Don't travel in at night...it's a little unsettling with the journey to your resort at night plus you're tired. You'll see much more of your journey and surroundings and be more relaxed about where you are if you come in during the day. This resort has a BEAUTIFUL beach! Don't let any of my cons deter you from going to THIS resort if you're planning to go to Cuba. Cuba just wasn't really our dream vacation. It's like many say, if you keep your expectations low, you'll love it! And this is a good resort for Cuba!

Room Tip: We stayed in the bungalow luxe...appear to be nice than the hotel rooms and private. We stayed in t...

This resort is in need of an update. The building, furniture and facilities are all outdated and very worn out. The beach is still top notch and the staff very friendly though. It is not by far the worst resort in Varadero.
We stayed in the two roomed Bungalow. A very nice Bungalow except for a minor inconvenience, no privacy at all! The designer who thought the idea of having doors with BIG HUGE OPEN HOLES in them need to be fired. Does not matter where you are in the Bungalow, every door has the same design meaning that when someone farts in the toilet you'll hear it in the living room, dining room, bed room. Nice going!

Room Tip: If you are a group of friends don't stay in any shared Bungalow. Unless you are VERY close you w...

We stayed at Bungalow 140 from January 11th to the 18th, 2013. The Bungalows are great! clean and well kept. The resort itself is dated but well maintained. The beach is to die for... truly amazing. Smooth white sand and clean blue sea. Food is OK, lots of choices but may not be for everybodys liking. THE STAFF... they are super friendly and nice, such a warm and hospitable people. They are what makes your vacation comfortable ,relaxing and very memorable. Thank you so much for a week of fun and a very relaxing vacation. We will definitely come back again.

I will make this simple, It was perfect in every way.
We stayed in the bungalow luxes, highly recommended. We had the same housekeeper for 2 weeks, she was sweet , and she cleaned our room spotlessly daily, even the shower door!
The buffet was good, lots of food, all the time. Carved, ham, chicken and fish (depending on the night). pizza. grilled seafoods and fish. fresh french sticks, freshly squeezed juices, lots of fruit, pastries and ice cream. Cuban style salads and cheeses. Spaghetti station, or burrito station (depending on the night). Centre table has revolving foods nightly too, veal stew, cuban rice, fish fried in butter, malanga, yucca (mmmmm) mash potatoes, squash, french fries, baked chicken or pork chops. Shish kabob station. much much more. brealfast buffet was great too, the usual, omelets, scrambled eggs, bacon, ham, etc...great cuban coffee and pineapple or orange juice. Lunch
The pool was clean, the towel exchange always had clean towels.
The beach was cleaned daily.
The train to the Las Americas mall was handy and free.
The bank is at the mall, but there is only one teller, and they let you into the bank one at a time.
Your bank card may not work, the ATM will give you cash advances on your credit cards.
The hotel had some great evening entertainment, but go and see the Buena Vista Social Club show at the mall, ($27)
Car rental is easy, a decent car was $95 a day all inclusive.
TIP THE SERVERS!! they will make you their family and greatly improve your experience.
Bring giveaways for the cubans, dollar store sunglasses, reading glasses, insulated cups, etc...
