We have been visiting this hotel annually for many many years now and yet to ever have had a bad experience...in fact we would not stay at any other hotel...this year we have invited 14 of our family and friends to join us...this hotel is second to none from all others....great people...perfect service....wonderful food...and of course the location is the best....this resort had really stepped up to the plate in recent years making it...in our opinion the finest hotel in the area....we are so looking forward to sharing it this December with all our friends and family...see you all again on December 28th....

Being use to small hotels, the first impression of this hotel was a bit of a shock. It is big, our room needed a bit of TLC looking a little tired. First impression was to ask for a return flight home. This not possible, we had to stay the duration. The food was awful, though they had a large choice it was served warm, meat was tough, chicken fatty, scrambled eggs cold, chips cold etc. Their specialist Steak restaurant the meat was so tough you could not cut it. Chinese restaurant, all dishes where nearly the same and the Italian restaurant serving tough pizzas!
On the up side all staff were excellent giving a good serves. The pool and beach were very good, the main pool needs to be slightly deeper. Plenty of activities to do. to us the hotels is more suited for under 40's or those who think they are!

My wife, son (7), daughter (2 ½) and I stayed at Sol Palmeras at the end of August/beginning of September. This was our 6th time to Cuba, but first at Sol. Overall impressions of the resort were good. There were lots of activities to do, and excellent customer service, but the food was the worst we’ve had in Cuba. Here’s my detailed description…

Room
Our first room was bungalow 222 – but immediately changed due to an ant infestation (including in a bed!) and mould in a few spots. The front desk switched us quickly and without issue, to a two-story bungalow #210 (all bungalows ending in 10 are two-story) – a great location, right off the beach. The bungalow section is like a different world – very quiet, relaxed atmosphere. Bungalow was beautiful and large. Upper floor had two bedrooms and washroom, with living room and kitchenette on the main floor. A few ants came into the washroom and kitchenette through windows, but not a major problem. Standard furnishings, but no clock/radio/cd/ipod dock. Water was re-filled daily, but no other drinks provided (only available for extra charge). Be careful leaving towels out on your patio – ours were stolen, along with a bathing suit.

Beach
Great beach with powder soft sand and clear water. Activities were on the right side of the beach (in front of the main hotel), with a much quieter and less crowded section of beach to the left in front of the bungalows. Lots of palapas and loungers available, and there are kayaks, pedal boats and sail boats. My son was stung by a jelly fish, which is unusual for Varadero – the lifeguard was helpful with that.

Pools
There are two main pools – an activities pool with basketball nets, volleyball net and water polo nets (balls are available from the activities hut), and another pool with the pool bar in the middle (note: not a swim-up bar). Both have very shallow sections that are good for young kids. There is also a small wading pool for kids next to the main pool.

Activities
There are lots of activities available here. Most are concentrated around the pool area, including a basketball and volleyball court, table tennis, hoops mini basketball game, darts, giant chess, giant connect 4 and other games. There are also tennis courts, a soccer field and bikes in front of the resort, plus mini-golf in the bungalow section. The animation team was great and brought out other things, like the inflatable human ball, water mats for running across, bouncy castle for the kids, etc. There didn’t seem to be too much activity at the kids club itself, as they always seemed to be poolside. There is also a small playground and treehouse next to the kids club. The video game room is open in the afternoon and evenings with 8-9 playstations and flatscreens. There is also a pool table – although oddly you have to pay to use it (7CUC/hour). The resort also provides a free train every ½ hour to Las Americas mall where there is a good pizza place. There was entertainment every night, including kids minidisco and music in the lobby.

Food/drink
Unfortunately, the food was the worst we’ve had in Cuba. We could always find something to eat, but a lot of the food just wasn’t enjoyable. We had breakfast at the buffet every day – usually crowded, but never had to wait for a table. Service wasn’t good (we were sometimes ignored). Best bets were the omelette stations (there are two – the 2nd at the back was never crowded, maybe people didn’t notice it?) and baked goods (muffins, croissants, etc – although they went quickly).

Lunch was available at the buffet, by the pool, at the beach and at the snack bar in the bungalow section. There was a very limited selection by the pool and beach (either hot dog or hamburger –not both – awful pizza, plus fries, rice salad, fruit). The best place was the snack bar in the bungalow section (behind the Chinese restaurant) – they made everything to order there and had a good selection (hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches (ham/cheese, tuna), eggs, fries). They also had a nice, quiet patio area there, next to the hot tubs.

Between the pool and beach, there is an ice cream hut that usually has 3-4 flavours and lots of toppings (sauces, sprinkles, liquor). It was great, and had a really nice server.

Dinner at the buffet was OK – but nothing incredible. The best a la carte was the Chinese restaurant, which had really good spring rolls. Italian was hit and miss – lasagna was terrible, but the rest was OK. The Mexican a la carte was terrible – completely flavourless (the “salsa” was tinned stewed tomatoes). Long pants are required only at the Chinese and Italian restaurants (other a la cartes are outdoors, so they’re more relaxed).

There were lots of bars, but only one where you could get a proper mojito (outside the Italian restaurant and only open evenings). The lobby bar is the only one where you could get anything requiring a blender - other bars would serve pina coladas, but they were juice with ice cubes.

Service
I unfortunately had to deal with customer service a few times (due to the room change and the theft), and found their staff to be excellent. They rectified problems quickly, and had the right attitude. They replaced the stolen towels immediately, and also provided some compensation for the stolen bathing suit.

One other thing to point out is that at least half of the visitors to the resort were Spanish-speaking. Although the staff at the resort all speak English, it could sometimes be difficult for the kids to find friends their age who spoke English. But that certainly didn’t get in the way of them having fun.

My wife and i returned yesterday from Cuba staying at the Sol Palmeras in Varadero before we went we read all of the recent comments on here good and bad and have to say that all the good reviews are mostly accurate we found the hotel just about the most freindly well run hotel we have ever stayed at well deserved 4 star rating could be 5 with just a couple of tweeks . food was exellent during our stay buffet was by far the best selection of food there was something for all tastes .We stayed in a bungalow deluxe which was clean spacious and well presented shower and a bath with flatscreen tv a good nights rest every night . now the best part of our stay the staff at the Sol Palmeras were absolutely superb helpfull freindly with nothing being too much trouble from check in to check out we were helped every step of the way . The buffet staff were great always on hand to top us up with drinks etc . the bar staff too were exellent our fav was a lovely lady Called Caridad who was la Chica Mojito she made the best Mojtos in Cuba if not the world a credit to the Hotel god bless you Caridad . the pool area was lovely clean tidy pool was clean and refreshing with a bar in the centre what more could you want . The beach was fine white sand and sea was gently shelving ideal for adults and kids alike plenty of sunbeds .we have no complaints at all during our stay but one minor thing which could easily be rectified the mini bar in our fridge was only stocked daily with bottled water maybe a can or 2 of beer and soft drinks could be added . but as i say this is not a complaint just a observation . all in all a superb holiday dont be put off by the negative reviews this hotel is stand alone brilliant . a must see while you are in Cuba is the overnight trip to havana which was awesome even if you like us didnt go to the tropicana show we prefered to use the time to explore Havana at night which we loved Havana is the safest city in the world at any time of the day and it comes to life at night .
this is an honest review and would wholeheartedly recomend Cuba and the Sol Palmeras to anyone . we will def be coming back xxx

I traveled in June to meet relatives from Canada for a holiday. We all loved the food, the beach and the service. Osvaldo at the night bar came over to us every night to make sure we were okay. The ice cream lady, Madeline, had an ice cream waiting everyday after just one time. At breakfast Idelmis always had us a table waiting and served us drinks every morning as well. Over all it was a good holiday.

Ive just returned from my 6th vacation at Sol Palmeras, and words can't even begin what an amazing time I had...

A few years ago, my fellow Canadian friends and I met a few girls from England and one from Germany and this has been out meeting spot ever since. The resort has beautiful grounds, and is not so big that it takes forever to get to places. It is located next to the Plaza Americas shopping centre, and there is a train that runs every day, (every 30 minutes I think) that will take you there and bring you back... If you do go to the shopping centre, Pizza Nova is a must try!!

Room - We all stayed in bungalows, which had a living room, bathroom, and large bedroom..The maid did and excellent job of cleaning, and the best part is that we arrived to a fridge stocked with beer, soda, and a bottle of rum on the table :)

Beach - What can I say...Most beautiful beach in the world!

Restaurants - We ate at the seafood, Italian and Chinese a la cartes... All were delicious, but I will say, I think I speak for all of us when I say that the Chinese was our favorite!! Speaking of the food, I know some people didn't care for the food at the buffet, and I know it wasn't as good as other times we had been, but we didn't starve either!! Always found something to eat..And I know that the hotel is making some changes to the buffet, but you can't judge your whole experience on just the buffet!! A big thank you to Maylin also, our waitress who always was able to get us a table, and made sure our glasses were always full, of wine :)

Entertainment - There are shows every night, and if you bring your children they will love the Fantasy show! All the entertainment staff dress up at Disney characters and act out scenes from various movies..A must see!! After the shows, you can move down to the fun pub and continue to dance the night away! Ronco, the dj, is very good at taking requests!! Also, on Friday night, they have a beach/foam party...So so much fun!! You must make sure you can make it to one!

Pool - They have a larger pool, where they have water polo games and other activities, and a smaller quiet pool as well...We spend most of our days in the quieter pool, and even participated in the aqua gym, on the last day! It was actually quite a good workout! There is no swim up bar, but Jorge Luis always made sure we had some drinks handy!

Staff - I will say that the main reason we continue to return is the staff...Raynier, the entertainment team manager, knew in advance that we were all coming and made sure that we all had bungalows that were close to each other. He truly made us feel as though we were at home during our stay. He even arranged for us to have a group dinner together in a private dining room, where the meal was absolutely superb and we had the opportunity to meet the chef. When I decided I wanted to stay a few days longer, he found out the prices for me, and came right with me to reception so that I could make the booking!
Every morning all the entertainment staff made sure to come say Hola to every one by the pool, and to make sure the trip was going ok.
A BIG thank you to Alberto, Patricio, Yenis, Roberto, Armandito, Waldo, Chino, Issa, Mariesly, Rauli, Leo, Levys, Roni, Micheal, and of course Raynier for making each and every vacation to Sol Palmeras more and more special each time, and for making us feel safe and as though we are family. It is because of people like you, that we will keep returning to SP for a very long time!!

Besos! from Candy :)

Thank you very much for your faithfulness choosing Sol Palmeras for your holidays for the sixth time. We appreciate it.

We also appreciate your complimentary comments published and shared on the Trip Advisor. All of them made us feel satisfied with our work, we will share your comments with our staff.

We will congratulate, on your behalf, all the persons you mentioned on your review. But I want to highlight two points you mentioned, which I appreciate very much: one of them is the good opinion you have of Raynier Sanz, the Manager of our Entertainment Team, who is a very valuable person for our hotel. And the other thing I would like to refer to is, that I have not enough words to express all my proud and gratitude towards your comment that the main reason you visit Sol Palmeras so many times is because of its staff. Thank you very much for this, we really appreciate it.
