“Absolutely fantastic place with great staff and good entertainment for the whole family.”
Reviewed February 25, 2012

We stayed at Sol Palmeras or 2 weeks in order to get married there. We were a party of 16 and nothing was too much trouble. We asked to change rooms the first day we arrived as the view wasn't great and as soon as one became available the following day we were moved. Before we went we were told not to expect too much in the way of food, but I have to say apart from the fish restaurant ( which I would advise everyone to steer clear of) the food was fantastic and hot and a lovely selection of restaurants.
The wedding coordinator was worth her weight in gold. Everything was arranged once we were there and every aspect of the day ran very smoothly. It was a perfect day with lovely touches i.e flowers, golf buggy to get me to the wedding location, room turn down service. Everyone was so friendly in the hotel and we had a holiday to remember. Thank you to everyone who made our day special and our holiday fantastic. We will be back xxx

Sol Palmeras is a big hotel situated in an idyllic position on the north coast. We had a wedding package included for our daughter. I will keep this review short as the only way to form a true opinion is to visit this all inclusive resort.
Firstly the staff are just wonderful. They 'give their all' and considering their circumstances. remain the happiest and friendliest people we have ever had the pleasure to meet. The room was spacious and clean (the maid 'Maria' was wonderful and looked after us so well) The pool large and clean. The bar staff were just great and kept the 'rum flowing continuously' they were very adept at making many different cocktails on request! Food was always available and varied with many of the dishes new to our european palate! You can book any of the 5 specialist restaurants for your evening meal (Italian & Chinese were our favourites!) Again the staff were just so welcoming & the food more specialist than the buffet restaurant. The Wedding package (with wedding planner) was a 'dream.' The sand pristine and water crystal clear and warm. Everything and more was organised and with with no worries or panic I can definitely recommend this to anyone who is thinking of getting married in a stunning location. We booked a local Cuban band and they were excellent. This totally safe environment was fantastic for the grand-children to have fun and all helped by the wonderful hotel staff. I have never 'tipped. so much!!! I just really felt that all concerned went out of their way to help us enjoy the wedding and holiday. Don't expect European standards of cuisine etc, just 'go with flow' enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and people and you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Ask for a pool view.

Enjoyed our first family trip to Cuba. The beach was clean and perfect. The staff was helpful and courteous. The bungalow was a little disappointing as our king size bed was actually two twins put together with separate sheets. The bathroom had an ant problem so they transferred us to to another bungalow. It had the same problem but we just went with it. The pools were clean and the resort had many activities to offer. The food was average and out of all the a la cartes, I would recommend the Oshin Chinese restaurant. The staff in the buffet restaurant were welcoming and outgoing especially our new friend Oliver who stopped to speak to us often. Our maid Maidenoles left some nice notes and did a great job of taking care of us.

It has the best beach ever--no rocks or coral...just white and soft as you would imagine it.

Gracias Sol Palmeras for a great vacation.

Room Tip: Ask for a king size sheet for your bed. Don't put your A/C lower than 22, they will make noises...

i just wanted to let people know i am goin back to Sol Palmeras a forth time in the last 2 years. i have been to cuba at least 12 times and by far Sol Palmeras exceeded my expectations. Always busy and full of international people, which i love and a very friendly and dedicated staff. I went twice with a group of girlfriends and once with a group of 20 people for a wedding. They all loved it. Food is good. The new seafood restaurant is suprisingly delicious. the beach is perfect, very private and the grouns are clean and well maintained even though this is an old hotel. I work with travel agents and i always tell them to recommend this hotel to their clients. In hope to have the same good vacation in March 2012.

Just returned from my very first hot beach holiday ever....and the Sol Palmeras made sure it was the best!! We enjoyed everything about the resort right from the start.

-we were up-graded to a bungalow free of charge just for asking. We enjoyed the bungalow, very quiet, but had a plumbing problem (no ones fault, was atteneded to immediatly) so we thought we'd try the hotel rooms. Our Maid in the bungalow was the best! So happy with the gifts we left for her, she made us a lovely blanket swan to enjoy. The best bungalows are the 100 -200 series, but if you really like quiet solitude, the 400-500 series are farther from main resort. We enjoyed the best coffee at the snack bar by the hot tubs/massage area.

-we brought Cat and Dog treats and enjoyed feeding them to the stray animals around the bungalows.

-bring your own travel clock or watch as the only clocks I seen in the whole place where at the reception desk. They operate on Cuban time....which means no one is in a hurry.....anywhere! So, relax and just go with it. Our tour guides had watches and tour are kept on time though.

-hotel room was nice. We liked it as it was so close to the pool bar we spent a lot of time in that we could just go to our own room for the bathroom. If we turned the other way in hallway, we were less then a minute from the beach. Even though we were close to lobby and entertainment, none of it could be heard from room. All ceramic tile floors, so bring little bedroom slippers to make it cozy on your feet.

-for some reason, there are no fans.....AC, but no simple fans. I highly suggest if you have room for a small table top fan in your luggage that you bring one. The humidity got crazy at the end of our week, and a little air movement would have fixed that problem. Will bring a fan next time.

-didn't need to bring my power converter, this resort had 110v plug ins. Also, blowdryer in room worked great.

-bring your own insulated mugs for drinking. Then plan on leaving them behind as a gift for your favourits bar tender.

-bring gifts for your maid!! They like panyhose, feminine hygeine products (which are just too expensive for average Cuban to buy), nail polish, disposible razors, clothing......really, just about anything. They are the most apprective people I've every met when given a gift. We gave a roll of duct tape to a gardener and you'da thought I gave him a brick of gold!

-we spent tons of time at the pool bar, and made great friends with bartenders. They treated us soooo well, and made the best drinks. Lots of cold beer and the best Mojiotos!

-spent one day around pool. Very nice! Lots of activites to watch or join in. Workers all spoke with us, spoke some english and tried hard to converse with us. They happily took the time to teach us some spanish too.

-the beach was huge, always chairs available. Lots of room to move away from crowd if thats what you want. We didn't stray far from beach bar. Always something good to eat at beach snack bar......endless ice cream!! The beach was fun to walk the length of and pick up sea shells. You can walk the beach all the way to the neighbouring resorts and the Plaza Americano. Endless strip of white sand where a joy to this cold white nothern Canadian girl!!

-not sure why all the complaints about food. The Sol Palmeras buffet had an endless choice of food. From basic pasta and sauce, to fresh cooked for you meat and fish, to cuban specialities. Always a roast beef or pork loin at carving station. I loved the lady making my choice of pasta every night!! Breakfast was even better! Fresh fruit, smoothies, fresh made omelets, or pancakes/french toast/ hot buffet stuff ...endless choice. We only ate at 1 a la carte as we just enjoyed the buffet. The Steak House was very nice. We did enjoy and were treated exceptionally well. Food was very good too!

-Take the catamaran tour to Caya Blanco.....it was the highlight of our trip! A day spent gliding across blue water, swimming with the dolphins, lobster lunch at Caya Blanco, a couple of hours free to enjoy white sand beach, then putting the sails up and dancing on board all the way back to the marina.....truly the way memories are made!!

-Took jeep safari tour to a farm in Matanza area. A real sharp contrast to resorts! When I seen how the cuban people really live, I wanted to give away all my stuff to them. The best part was handing out candy and gifts to the children that line the roads. They have perfected running up to the jeeps and grabbing the things we held out the window. Hearing them yelling "we love you Canada" made it all worthwhile!! I brought candy, gum, pencils, notebooks, little backpacks, tootbrushes and paste. Another friend gave out crayons and coloring books.

Overall I highly recomenned the Sol Palmeras. Something for the whole family there. I felt extremely safe the whole time. Just let go of some of your expectations, embrace the Cuban culture and enjoy.......and you will have a great holiday.

I'm already planning on going back next year!! See you then!!

Room Tip: chose a bunglaow if you want quiet and solitude. We sat on our bungalow porch and felt alone in the...

Sol Palmeras is certinaly a good hotel - very big and very busy at peak times!

My husband and I visited during the first wek in August and by the time we were due to leave every little corner within the hotel seemed to have someone in it! Quite a change from the first few days, when we could go for breakfast, lunch or dinner without a problem, but the latter part of the week became an absolute nightmare in this respect!
It didn't seem to matter what time we went to eat during our last 3/4 days, there was a queue! Very often guests were just bare-faced and jumped the queue, and this I must admit is one of my pet hates.... my opinion of the resort just got worse and worse as the time went on - though I suppose I should have thought about this more before making the reservation?

When we talked to other guests it was interesting to find they were of the same opinion - the last week July was fine, but I don't think I could have coped with another week the way things were shaping up! We were told it was the Cuban people who were ther problem - they just ignored those in any queue, and admittedly there was often a row - which is not whay I go on holiday at all - it just made the eating experience a nightmare and one which we dreaded every meal time to be honest!

That said there are lots of positive things aqbout this place too - entertainment is good, food is generally good .... if you reserve a table in one of the 5 a la carte restaurants,,,,,,,,,,, and the pool area was generally good too.
The most disappointing bit about the pool was that when you were in the water it was common form to have to try to avoid the plastic cups which hindered every swim. I'm not sure if they staff were having a lazy fit, or if this is ormal, but we weren't the only folks who noticed this problem.

Staff at the hotel were generally nice - though each day it seemed that they didn't recognise you? I always think this is such a shame in an hotel - though I suppose with all inclusive punters tips are seldom forthcoming - so perhaps they didn't really care about excellent customer service. It would have been helpful to have waiters walking around the pool area to take drink orders (and lift the rubbish) but this wasn't on the agenda.

Housekeeping were great though - we stayed in the main hotel and our room was just to the left of the main entrance - it was quiet enough, though there were dogs and cats in the bungalow area who spent many nights on the prowl, howling and meowing - if you aren't a light sleeper I don't suppose this would matter? The room was well kept and we were kept well (if you know what I mean)?
We actually had a corner room which appeared to be rather more spacious that others on the straight part of the corridor. TV was quite OK for English speaking guests if you liked watching subtitles, but then again who goes on hioliday to watch the box? I love a cuppa coffee, and I was relevied to find that there was a kettle and condiments on offer. We got these replenished daily and without any hassle at all (which was a thumbs up from me).

The beach - well, that was beautiful - white, white sand and lots of ocean - plenty of room not to be swimming around in a little square, and spacious enough not to have a water baby at each ear too - which considering the number of people was a real bonus!
The beach was clean and it was good to be able to walk for a mile or two - especially if you are a shell over!

It wold have been much better to have had some more information about what we could do out of the hotel - there was nothing much at all. We were fortunate to chat with many people during our stay and it was the day before we left that we discovered the train would take us to a shopping centre, not far and without charge.
Weather wise we had a rather mixed bag - some days it rainined all day, others had blinks of sunshine, and 2 days it was gorgeous. On one of the wet days we took the rtip to the shopping centre and thankfully we were able to buy some souveniers and gifts for our family members back home. One shop was much the same as another though, and variety was lacking - we got what did though, and everyone was happy!

Would I return - not sure! I think I would have to do some research to find out when the holiday time for locals is / other European Countries... if it was less crowded? Possibly - though I did miss having something to do out of the hotel.

Room Tip: Our room was OK, though I know that some found the pool side noisey, and many cabana's too far f...

Dear Guest,
Thank you for publishing and sharing on the Trip Advisor, your opinions about your stay at Sol Palmeras Hotel.
We appreciate all your complimentary comments about our hotel.
We understand on your review that, in spite of some difficulties you had, you enjoyed your holidays in our hotel.
As you well expressed, it is high season on the first week and part of the month of August. This is a month of a very high occupancy in our hotel, this mean that, at busy hours there are some persons awaiting on line to select their food at the buffet. We understand this is a situation we should solve, therefore we are analyzing a project to enlarge the buffet restaurant, in order to avoid people on line waiting.
We would also like to inform you that, the personnel working at the swimming pool area is constantly collecting the empty glasses from there.
Regarding your comment about receiving information of our hotel, I would like that each guest at the check in is given an envelope containing a map with all the necessary information, which we will improve it if necessary.
Hoping that, in case you decide to return to Cuba, you give us the opportunity be your hosts again.
Sincerely,

We've just returned from Sol Palmaras and by far this is the best resort we've been to in Cuba. There were 6 of us travelling together The staff are amazing, the food is very good, the layout of the resort is good, and the resort was kept clean.
We were upgraded to a bungalow for free our first night but we moved to the motel, we found it was too far away from everything. It was very cute though.
The staff were truly amazing!! At the activities booth at the pool, Mary works there and she is more than helpful at arranging anything you want to do. She found transportation to Havana for us at a lower cost than the bus tour and this way we could do what we wanted and not have to follow a tour. She also booked our a la carts for us and arranged transportation to the nearby town for us. Very nice girl!!! At the Mojito bar in the lobby, Santiago works there. Very nice and a lot of fun. In the lobby a waitress Francie, who is warm and very lovely. The lobby bar staff are exceptionally friendly.
The food was very good and I am a little picky about flavour. Some reviews said the Chinese was terrible, well I eat a lot of Chinese Hong Kong Style at home and I thought it was very flavourful. Acctually we went there for dinner twice.
Some people on other reviews compained that the pool is cold. Well ya but that is what makes it refreshing. The beach was of course very nice. I just found the beach chairs hurt my back because they were hard plastick.
All in all, I would definately recommend this resort. In fact we will probably return next year.
