Reviewed February 19, 2013

Stayed February 8th , 2013 for 1 week.

As our departure from Halifax left just before a huge snowstorm it would have been difficult to find fault in any resort we were headed to!

We had a great time at this resort. I would rate it as more of a 3 ½ star though. Purely on the standard of the accommodation. However the a/c was great, there was always hot water, and the room was cleaned very well each day (but the fridge wouldn’t work). There was a plumbing issue with the bath which was fixed the same day.

The food was pretty good on the whole. The Italian restaurant was the place to eat. Even though there were no limits on visits you had to become part of the stampede each morning at 9am sharp to get in the booking line up! We got a reservation most days.

We found that if you left a few tips here and there we received really good service at the bars. I don’t think we waited more than a couple of minutes for a drink the whole time we were there.

The beach is amazing. One of the best we’ve been to. The color of the water was beautiful. The pool was great too, and always a sun lounger available.

For the golfer: you can opt for the golf package which included 3 rounds. Carts at Varadero golf club were mandatory (cost 30 CUC) and rental clubs (which were Taylormade – 35 CUC). The course is 4 km away from the resort and cost 10 CUC including tip.

We booked here because we were coming in late and thought it would be convenient and we wouldn't have to worry about where to eat etc. The room was fine and we even had 3 beds for our triple occupancy. We had the worst noisiest neighbours which of course was not the fault of the hotel but it does make the stay inconvenient. I had to get up and ask them to quiet and they were totally rude and kept it up throughout the night.

The food was on the poor side for Cuba. I am vegan so of course that makes things a lot harder and I don't expect to have much options if any. Besides fruit there wasn't much else but again I don't blame the hotel for that. Besides that the food could have been better.

To be honest we didn't use much else in the resort. The beach was beautiful, but I find Varadero small and there really isn't anything to do there. We spent our time traveling throughout Cuba and only flew in and out of Varadero. On the way out of Cuba we stayed in a lovely little apartment in the back of a families home right in town and it was great.

If you're not picky about food and you're on a budget and only want to stay on the beach for your vacation this would probably work and you could probably get a pretty good all inclusive deal. If you want more find a casa of some type. Much cheaper and better.

We stayed the first week of February. We arrived at the resort around 10:30pm, check in was fairly quick, for only two gals working, even when another guest started giving them grief, they were still nice and patient.

Resort is not too big, so quick & easy to get around. Clean grounds. Activities were far & few between around the pool, but they did do a good job getting people involved with beach volley ball & aqua-size in the ocean.

Room was clean and the safe, toilet & a/c worked fine. Our maid, Gladys, was a great lady and took really good care of us and left extra towels when asked. The only thing that didn't work in our room was our phone. When a wake-up call was needed, they sent someone knocking on our door in the morning.

Front desk staff were also accommodating and the manager was really nice and helped get our group booked into the italian ala carte. Ala cartes can only be booked in the morning for the same day and fill up VERY fast as they don't have enough staff to serve a full restaurant. The Mexican ala carte was a disappointment. Buffet food is exactly that, buffet food and not the best we've experienced in our many years of traveling, but this is Cuba. That being said, we always managed to find something suitable and no one went hungry. The snack shack was a great place to get tasty burgers, sandwiches & fries in the evening.

In comparison to Mexico, the service was lacking. I don't think this is because the staff want more tips as other reviews have posted, but rather that there just isn't enough staff. There were only two bartenders working and no wait staff. So naturally, service gets slow when it gets busy. A few extra dollars goes along way and we were well taken care of. Beautiful beach - if you're a beach person this is the place for you.

Our first couple of days were quiet and relaxing with the exception of Alhol who for some reason would not leave our family and the nice couple we met from Ontario alone. Then a bunch of rowdy BC people showed up and Alhol gravitated towards them and fit right in. The staff did their best to accommodate other guests while this group seemed to take over the resort. After witnessing these out of control people doing the "worm" on the floor at the bar, we had had enough. The staff didn't seem to notice that other guest were being pushed out of the bar by this group. Our family managed to stay away from this group for a few days but because this is a small resort, there was no escaping their antics.

Overall, besides the rowdies, this resort is a very, quiet place to go & relax on one of the most beautiful beaches we have seen and would rate this a 3.5. Not sure why there are so many negative reviews. If you're looking for an affordable, clean, relaxing place to go, then this is the place for you.

Room Tip: Bring along extra toiletries, sunglasses, clothes, etc to leave for the maids (and other staff), the...

At the far end of the Peninsula lies this all inclusive hotel, which is of average size with its 300 rooms. These are divided over many two storey cottages which all have eight rooms. The lay out of a holiday village. Rooms are big and comfortable, each with a small balcony. Big swimming pool, good stretchers. Direct access to the beach with nice facilities. The regular feeding of the masses in the buffet is made tolerable in a few ways: some of the food is made to order (e.g. hamburgers) and there are two separate restaurants where you can only eat by reservation. Suming up: Turquesa deserves its four stars.

We were at the resort the week of Jan 18th. Our expectations weren't high as we knew we were going to Cuba. On the plus side the food was better than expected. On the minus side our room was poorly cleaned, the safe was broken and our neighbors were rude (lots of banging doors, thumping overhead and load voices from 6:30 a.m. each morning). The front desk was difficult and unfriendly when we asked about changing rooms to get a working safe we were told "come back in 2 hours" then "come back tomorrow" (Ok we know when we are getting the run around) had to carry valuables with us for the week. Our patio door was screwed shut (probably good for security). If you wanted to sit on the deck you had to walk around and climb over the railing. There was very little english spoken on this resort the week we were there so forget about visiting with other guests. Even the "english bus tour" to Havana had two other people speaking english though the tour guide spoke good english. Would recommend the tour if Cuban history is of interest to you (learned a lot). Even though we tipped the restaurants and bars on the resort, service was hit and miss with the exception of the mexican restaurant it was excellent. The beach was great, a shortage of chairs at the pool even on the poor weather days. We paid the extra for late check-out as the bus didn't leave for the airport until 1 a.m. we asked for a wake up call just in case. They called us at 10:30 p.m. to ask if we wanted a wake up call for 11:30 or 1:30 we confirmed 11:30. We never did receive the actual wake up call so fortunately it was just a backup. The bus broke down on the way to the airport though a replacement was sent in time so we didn't miss our flight. This is definately not a 4 Star resort Cuba or not!

We have been to this resort twice, and will hopefully be going again next year. Room maids were awesome, always folded towels and blankets into little characters. Bar service could be slow at times but if you tip, they will always come to you first because you are showing respect and appreciation for what they are doing. I saw a lot of very rude tourists who seem to think that they should be waited on hand and foot, and you can't blame the workers for growing tired of the rude tourists. Treat them well and they will treat you well. Same goes for the buffet, you tip, they give you exceptional service. many of the staff would take the time to stop and talk to us whenever they saw us, we got to know them on a more personal level and they became our friends. They really take the time with children and enjoy their company. I highly recommend this safe, and social resort to anyone, especially those with children.

Room Tip: all rooms are very central, it does not take much time to talk from place to place. If you can requ...

This review will be helpful for those travelling in April as we went there last April in 2012.
We are a young couple, have been to Cuba 2 times, this was 3rd. We chose this hotel because they had a nice deal for 5 days. Too bad we couldn't stay for longer than that due to tight work schedules at the time.
- I will start of with the flight. We went with Sunwing, which was great. The champagne, hot meal and wine made the flight more enjoyable, the 3 hours went pretty fast.
- Accommodation: We got there around 10 pm, and they didn't have any rooms left, we got a room close to the reception and our windows were facing a small road with a tractor that kept going back and forth. We closed all windows, slept well. But we couldn't use the balcony because it faced the road. This room was renovated and had a new air conditioner which was pretty good, it also had new shades. Overall, nice and spacious. The next day we exchanged it for a room closer to the beach. It was located on the second floor in one of those units in the center. It was nice, but the air conditioner was old. We just kept our windows open and the fresh air from the sea kept the room naturally cool and breezy. They had a shortage of towels in rooms at one point, but that wasn't a biggie.
- Money Exchange: they have a very convenient money exchange kiosk located on site, just bring you passport. Some hotels have money exchange at reception, I don't remember if this hotel had that.
- Beach: The beach was great, and the water is perfect in April. It is not too cold or too hot. We went a fun snorkeling trip where we fed bread to fish and took the paddle boats just for the exercise. Make sure to reserve your place in the morning, because there is never enough beach chairs. We really disliked this because we never faced this problem in other Cuban resorts.
- Pools: we went for the ocean, never used the pools but they seemed just fine to me.
- Service: was great! we just love the people there, the bartenders were very nice and the ladies in the buffet read our mind. We were very nice to them and they provided 5 star service to us before we even tipped. They liked us because we didn't complain, didn't load plates of food that we wouldn't eat (LIKE SO MANY PEOPLE DO) and overall were respectful.
- Food: This is the part that all people seem to complain about. We liked the buffet and Italian. Japanese was different from what we are used to in Toronto, but fun for a change. The main buffet attempted different themes every night, such as Mexican with tacos and guacamole. We loved the meats, shrimps and fish. We are not into junk food so a fresh omelette with yogurt for breakfast, fish, salad and soup for lunch and salads + meat, fish, shrimp for dinner were great and healthy choices! There were all these great tasting condiments and dressings, I guess we are not into ketchup and peanut butter. No idea what people complain about. I was shocked when people hoarded chips in the airport on the way back... really? chips?
- Drinks: The mojitos were high in sugar but delicious. The beer was of 3 varieties in the lobby bar, fresh from the cans. The crystal beer was served at the beach and pool bars. The white wine was not bad, I think they import the wine from Spain. Try that mint liqueur in a shot glass with ice, very refreshing.
In conclusion: I could probably hoard problems and negatives in this review, but i didn't notice any. We are young, we went to spend time together and warm up after the cold winter. It was a wonderful vacation. Would I return to this resort? No, because we live once and we want to go to different places.
