“Mediocre service, double price catalogues for tourists!!!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 30, 2013

As we entered the palladar we enjoyed the nice environmet. As wee proceeded with the order we where not satisfied with the quality of wines (terrible, taste like vinegard), and the lobster was medium to poor taste and quality.

What we didn't like is that as we exited the restaurant we realized that the taxi driver that drove as there on our demand (he did not propose the restaurant, we did) took a comission in front of our eyes!

The worst part is when I returned to demand our money back for the wine we didn't drink but we were over- charged for, I took a menu from the pile next to the menus we were given and I realized that the prices were 50% lower for non- tourists!!!

The sad thing is that after discussing with the manager he admitted that they DO have different prices for tourists (double price) and that taxi drivers ALWAYS take a comission when they drive customers there. In that case (when they see tourists, or non- tourists driven there) they take out the expensive catalogue...

The lobster price for the non- tourist was 8 pesos while for tourists 15!!!

So, when you get there, beware of the taxi driver and ask for the NORMAL/ CHEAP menu!!!

“one of the best new paladars in Santiago de Cuba”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2013

The paladar "el Madrileño" in Vista Alegre is just down the street from the Museum of Images and not far from the Havanatur office. The food was great, and quite reasonable. I had a shrimp cocktail appetizer with a delicious garlic-y homemade mayonnaise sauce. My friends had tender pork dishes. Rather than freezing air conditioning and blasting reggaeton, el Madrileño features a beautiful patio, a nicely styled garden, and a giant birdcage with sweet tweeting parrots. Move over La Maison! In fact, this place will give all the restaurants in Vista Alegre stiff competition. Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. My new favorite Santiago eating spot.

“Excellent food, fast service, nice ambiance”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2013

El Madrileno was a positive surprise. Everything looked spic-and-span.
Everything what we want to order was available (unusual in Cuba), the ambiance was nice, and the service quick.
The cook spend time to serve the food in an attractive way.

We visited a lot of restaurants in Cuba, this was really one of the best.

“Don't expect too much”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 14, 2012

During the first evening of our two weeks Cuban holiday, we preferred to have the recommendations of the customer relations dept. of the Melia Hotel.

The restaurant is at a walking distance, a family owned private one (paladar). Together with some local side dishes, we ordered chicken cordon bleue, majority of the sides and the main dish were breaded and very greasy, in addition, ham and cheese in the main dish was scarce.

I have the opinion that, plenty of locals spinning around to recommend you one those countless paladars. they definitely have some relations with them and consequently, after so many nice words about those restaurants you expect something and you end up with disappointment.

Briefly, Cuban dishes look nice until you taste and thats all. If you go to a state owned one (1900 for ex.) you eat the same amount, probably slightly more or less tasty, the difference for me is negligible. At least you won't be upset with an exagerated check (like in Vistamar,Havana) relative to Cuban standards.
