The Hotel Camaguey of Islazul chain could be a good efficient 3 stars hotel if it was not that far from the center. It is located by the national highway in the outskirts of the historic city. The rooms are acceptable and the food also efficient. BUT the noise of the highway does not stop not a minute and 500 metres away is the railway line were noisy trains pass at around 4 AM. We had very difficult night .

Room Tip: Try a hotel in the city center or at least ask rooms in the back side of the hotel.

We stayed here as part of a 10-day Cuban tour and it was definitely the worst hotel we stayed in. The building was an ugly concrete block reminiscent of former Soviet bloc countries and the pool was so full of locals there wasn't room for any hotel residents to get in, let alone swim. Our room was small, scruffy and dark, with an ancient and noisy air-con unit fitted into the bottom of the window, thereby blowing onto the face of the person sleeping in the bed nearest to it.
The hotel appeared to be almost empty and there was a eerie atmosphere in the corridors. Dinner and breakfast were not buffet style, presumably due to the lack of guests, and there was a choice of 2 options for each. Breakfast was omelette or cheese and ham sandwich made of thick slices of white bread, dinner was a choice of chicken or pork with, you've guessed, rice and beans. The air-con in the "dining room" was so fierce I needed a cardigan! I really wouldn't recommend this place.

Room Tip: Don't go here!

Stayed in the hotel as part of a Cuba tour. There is not a lot of good to be said of this old roun down hotel. The pool was crowded with locals an very dirty, There is not a real garden just some grass around the hotel. The rooms are mediocre with have a balcony (without a pretty view). The restaurant is hardly deserves that name. We all had stomach trouble the following days. The only plus might be the small bar with friendly staff.

We stayed one night as part of a Cuba tour in June 2013 en route back from Santiago to Havana. On the journey to Santiago we stayed at the Gran Hotel in Camaguey centre which although not perfect was much better.

When you arrive you see this concrete 70's old tired yellow building. There are 5 floors and the single lift wasn't working - although a bell boy took the cases up we had to bring our own down from the 4th floor. The room was grubby (superficial cleaning only - but that's pretty much the case everywhere in Cuba) with dirt in the corners of the bedroom and bathroom. The beds had clean sheets but the mattresses were dirty and dusty - reasonably comfortable though. There was a balcony overlooking gas storage tanks and the door to the balcony was secured with a screwed on bolt as the door latch mechanism had rusted away years before. The air conditioning was a noisy unit fitted into the window space with the curtain cut and nailed around it! No wardrobe but a rail with hangers ans a case stand. A television that worked with CNN - but no BBC world news (only one hotel we stayed at in Cuba had this). The bathroom was old, worn, tired and poorly maintained if at all - again superficially clean only. The mirror had its silvering flaking away and the the hot water a trickle only and the shower head had no spray just a warm trickle again. To top the lot in the morning 2 cockroaches had moved in to the shower!

There is a swimming pool with a bar and quite a few people using the pool although it looked grubby. The worst thing here was the ear splitting loud music blasting away so that conversation was impossible. The restaurant was reasonably comfortable but the choice of food was as usual in Cuba very poor with hot dishes - just tepid (great for the bacteria) and the safe option a grill where they cooked meat while you waited. Breakfast similarly poor with a few choices of cooked meats, salads, vegetables (?left over from the night before) and freshly cooked omlettes again the safest option (after a trip to Cuba you'll not want another omlette for a long time!!).

The best thing about this hotel was the inside bar which itself was nothing to write home about but this was the only hotel we stayed in where the barman actually chatted to us and was friendly - most hotel staff in general gave you the attitude that they really didn't give a toss about you (unless they thought you might tip them).

So overall not recommended - Cuba is poor and the hotels reflect this, but in this one they could do a lot better with both the building and the service.

Room Tip: Get a taxi to another hotel

I went to the Hotel with some prejudices, so I was pleasantly surprised at the arrival.
The staff is very nice and helpful, the standard rooms is a very basic, they do not have minibar, or closet, but all has balcony with chairs and small table, the TV is old but works properly and they have several channels in different languages, the pool during winter time is quiet and well kept, with several sunbeds and palapas, and snack bar, but during summer or school recess (I stayed during school recess) the pool become very noisy and crowded.
The Hotel has an open air disco that works during week ends, so if you go to bed early choose the rooms in the other side of the Hotel. The Hotel offer internet access in the lobby.
As for the food, during breakfast is an small buffet, but you can have a variety of eggs done at the moment (like in hotels of superior categories), the rest of meals are a la carte but well cooked and nicely presented. If you want to visit the city center outside the Hotel there are private cars or taxi-bikes and the rates are proper.
An Snack Bar 24hrs is available at 2nd floor (beisdes restaurant) there you can find a very good espresso, cappuccino, etc and the Cuban sandwich is really great.

Room Tip: If you prefer a quiet area choose the opposite side of the Pool and disco, the 4 and 5 floors has ve...

A/C room with safe, old fashioned TV and balcony. Clean with good shower. No wardrobe but plenty of hangers on rail. Some noise through wall as there was a connecting door to the adjacent room.
Loud Disco noise until about 11 PM. Many local famillies round pool on Sunday.
Pool with sun beds.
No money exchange, no Wi Fi, Internet 3 pesos/30 mins.
Evening food OK. Wine only just drinkable at 3 peso per glass.Breakfast OK but coffee poor. Lemon squash rather than Orange juice. No coffee cups. No eggs/omletts cooked to order. No table laid at 07:40. Toilet cistern took a very long time to refil in the morning.

We stayed here for one night in order to break up our road trip from Santiago to Havana.
the rooms are basic and have plumbing problems - clogged bathroom. all the metal in the bathroom was rusted too.
the restaurant was basic too but the service was great! overall, the people seem very friendly in camaguey.
also, on the good side, the location was ideal for us - right on the highway next to a gas station making it easy to get in, get out and fill up for the remaining 7 hour drive.
