I took a group to Cuba for a week and the hotel was The Saratoga. The location was easy to walk to many attractions, across from the Capitol building. The pool on the roof was a nice place to cool off after a long day of outing.
Our room was a large suite facing the street, request an out facing room on an upper floor. Most things worked well and but sometimes often all systems would go down and you would have to remind yourself that you were in Cuba.
Wonderful bar on the Mezzanine good drinks and WIFI usually worked here.
Breakfast offered a large selection of fruits, meats and eggs plus cakes and juice. The staff did the best they could and we enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Out facing rooms on the upper floors, above 4th floor.

Staff have an arrogant air about them and very dismissive, tried to sort out a room problem but the girl on the reception kept answering the phone mid conversation whilst other staff at the desk just sat there talking to each other. The room problem wasn't sorted out as we were supposed to have a room with a proper balcony but didn't get one ( all pre booked) very unhelpful staff at the breakfast room and the food was awful. All in all a terrible experience. The only thing going for the hotel is the location very central

We stayed at the Saratoga for only 2 nights , during a weekend trip to Havana.
We were perhaps spoiled by the glorious accommodation and staff at the Paradises Rio D'Oro but we found it a slight let down. The rooms were lovely , although whoever designed them were definitely not readers as the bedside lights were totally inappropriate for that activity. The bathrooms were first rate and better than a lot we have used in the USA. The big failing was the staff. I suspect that a lot of the problem was inadequate staffing levels and poor training. This is supposed too be one of Havana's best hotels but certainly management/reception staff left a lot to be desired especially when it came to handling problems. I suggest they look at the way they distribute the work and get a more efficient working environment. Go to Las Vegas and look how they handle 1000s of guests! The food in the restaurants was average (a less than satisfying Burger at the pool bar on the roof) and an adequate , if uninspiring breakfast. The location of the hotel is magnificent. It would have been even better if we had been able to see/explore the Capital Building and the Opera House. (closed for restoration)

Room 103' tucked beside the elevator is dark, dank and musty. The only view is right into the mezzanine bar, so the drapes need to be kept closed. The room smelled badly of mildew and the ventilation system never took out the dampness and humidity. Front desk staff was unresponsive in a request for another room in our 5 night stay.

Breakfasts were included, but I found the quality of the fruit, cold cuts, cheese and many pastries poor. Scrambled eggs were great-an exception.

Staff, except for housekeepers, were unfriendly. Doormen rarely greeted guests.

Room Tip: Outside room, avoid 103

Spent 3 nights here and could not have been happier. Location is supurb, just diagonal across from the Capitol, and our 6th floor room had balconies that looked out at it. Very large and well-appointed rooms, beautiful wood finishes, great tile floors, high ceilings. The bathroom was the size of my first apartment - again large sink, huge tub and two person shower, classic 30's finishes and look. Sure, it is old, but the refurbishing is going well, and we enjoyed the classic ambience. As others mention, do take advantage of the rooftop pool, bar and restaurant. We had drinks there one evening to enjoy a fabulous sunset view over the city, and then ate dinner up there another night. Food was fine, not exceptional. Liked the mojitos and the wine.
The buffet breakfast was plentiful and nice variety - even had lox, which I appreciated greatly. A bit slower service than was comfortable, as we needed to make a tour departure and thought we allowed plenty of time (since it is a buffet.) Just took a while to get our hot tea, and then to get a refill. Otherwise, great ambience in a classic dining room space - felt really immersed in an historic property. We also stayed at the Nacional the same trip, and while my wife liked the Nacional better, I really preferred the smaller, more intimate classiness of the Saratoga. Also liked the mezzanine bar, and a great pianist each night (different ones) who genuinely seemed to appreciate that we were listening and enjoying the music. I would head back here anytime for a room on the upper floors. Staff seemed very professional, and changing money was a breeze. One lift was out for two of the three days, so that made travel a bit slower, but we just put this down to Cuba going through some refurbishing glitches.

Room Tip: Heed the advice at get a room on an upper floor.

We enjoyed our stay although the bottled water and bar drinks were very expensive. The breakfast was very good and the dinner we ate was pretty good. By far the best feature is the fantastic rooftop pool which has amazing views over Havana. Good location for exploring Havana. Staff not very help with car hire!

Boutique hotel, fabulous rooftop pool that is a wonderful retreat after a long hot and humid day of discovering the city. We prefer smaller hotels and the scale of this hotel is perfect. The caveats: do not stay on the lower floors. The noise from either the bar ( facing indoors) or the street (facing outdoors is loud so unless you are a good sleeper, avoid it. We also moved to a higher floor as the smell of mold/mildew was very strong. The only other disappointing occurrence was the addition of drinks to our bar tab which the bartender corrected after we caught the 'error'. He also encouraged us to pay cash and when we again said we prefer to charge to our room, he rewrote the our ordered items onto another check. Not sure what questionable activity the bartender was engaged in but word to the wise, check your bill before you pay. Otherwise, our stay was enjoyable.
