“Blunt”

Reviewed May 15, 2013

Not for a $5 taxi ride... one way!.
To see an tacky grey tower with an empty plaza... nothing exciting, nothing to see , only ugly modern 70s buildings around....
There is more to see in Havana!

Every year on May 1st (early in the morning) is the workers parade & traditional holiday of Cuban National Pride! Every other day of the year tour buses & cars fill the big lot with curious visitors taking photos of the National Hero Jose Marti Monument, Che & Camilo Wall Memorials (beautifully lit up at night) various gov't buildings & the newly renovated National Theatre for great shows in the late afternoon or evening! Visit inside the the tower for a history lesson & a trip up the elevator for scenic views of the city. A must see site on a visit to Havana!

Great architecture all throughout Cuba.

Canada should preserve our old buildings like this.

Even bullet holes show in places from Revolution.

Taxis lined up in square were fantastic . Old cars redone and looking good. Never saw so many in one place even Show and Shine cars we have here.

We rode in 57 Chevy Convertible from Varadero to Hotel in Varadero and driver took photos of Grandson behind wheel with me beside him 5 different angles, no extra charge. We rode in 1927 Ford that had no key in ignition but was hotwired.

Revoultion Square such a great photo opportunity as is many places in Cuba.
US Embargo??? They do not stamp Passport like Mexico so on Jeep tour 2 American tourists drove our jeep going through Cancun to Cuba...plus my Canadian visa credit card got converted to US dollars to Canadian...so much for Embargo. Currency Exchange at hotel took Us cash and converted to CUC Cuban Convertible pesoes only can be purchased and used in Cuba. They have those for tourists and regular pesoes for locals worth 25 local pesoes for 1 CUC.

While on vacation in Cuba for two weeks we had heard of the news on March 5th. that Hugo Chavez the President of Venezuela had died. Someone mentioned to us that the Cuban people were congregating in the Plaza, in a long queue to sign an book in memory of the President and leader of the Fifth Republic Movement. We took an hour ride on a pedicab from Old Havana to be a part of this. Upon arriving there was strict security redirecting traffic which took us a long way around to get to the end of the queue with the help of a friendly Cuban woman who was also trying to get into the line.

This Plaza which is normally fairly quiet, was completely the opposite on this day. There were literally thousands of people packed into this square waiting for hours in the hot sun to sign the book.
While we were waiting for some time to watch and talk to the people, we had noticed that in fact the line did not progress any further and that it would take all day for everyone to reach the book signing.

The devotion of the Cubans was astounding but of course they have always considered the President the best friend the Cuban people had in their history.
We were fortunate to have had the chance to visit the Plaza on this memorable day which was quite remarkable.

We took an open top taxi to the square because it is too much of a walk from old Havana - and I like walking. Good photo opportunities but there's not much else nearby. We hitched a coco taxi back which was an experience on the busy roads - thrilling but for the wrong reasons - was thankful that we were unharmed.
