Attraction details
Owner description: What is now called the Old Square was originally Plaza Nueva (New Square), built as a popular alternative to Plaza de Armas, the military and government nerve center. Later called Plaza del Mercado (Market Square) as Havana's commercial hub, Plaza Vieja was the site of executions, processions, bullfights, and fiestas -- all witnessed by Havana's wealthiest citizens, who looked on from their balconies. The original Carrara marble fountain surrounded by four dolphins was demolished in the 1930s when President Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) built an underground parking lot here. Today the square's surrounding structures vary wildly in condition, though all of them are noteworthy.

We took a walking tour of Havana and visited all of the squares, each was charming in its own way. The colours and styles of the various buildings was interesting. Having walked in the heat fro a couple of hours a beer in the Plaza Vieja beer and Malt Microbrewery was very welcome

The buildings of four different centuries can be seen here. From the medieval first fortress, the palace of the captains generals, the neo classical templete to the Mena mansion.

Lovely square which is a real sun trap. There is lots to do here and the take a walk around the surrounding streets to get a feel for 'real' Havana life

Plaza vieja is lovely!
There is something for everyone here! interesting sculptures by local artists, a pub which brews its own beer and maltas, coffee shops serving the most delicious coffee, the camara oscura, etc, etc. some of the buenavista social club members put on a nightly show at one end of the square.
it is a must see and is equally beautiful at night and during the daytime.
