Owner description: What is now called the Old Square was originally Plaza Nueva (New Square), built as a popular alternative to Plaza de Armas, the military and government nerve center. Later called Plaza del Mercado (Market Square) as Havana's commercial hub, Plaza Vieja was the site of executions, processions, bullfights, and fiestas -- all witnessed by Havana's wealthiest citizens, who looked on from their balconies. The original Carrara marble fountain surrounded by four dolphins was demolished in the 1930s when President Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) built an underground parking lot here. Today the square's surrounding structures vary wildly in condition, though all of them are noteworthy.

An extraordinary amount of rehabilitation work has been carried out on this square and a feature is the photo of each building to show how it was and how it is now.

Expected a bit of a hovel or cottage - it is in fact a lovely home with a swimming pool!!! His boat PILAR is there with his own designed seat to catch marlin. Make sure you notice the wet bar with the place for the bottles of rum I expect. Tip - put your camera right up to the window to take photos - mine from my iphone and my friend's from her camera came out great but those who didn't had shadows and they didn't look good. On clear day walk up to the top of the tower for the view. Make sure you hear the story about Black (the dog), Sad but telling.

Lots of old books and brik a brac for sale at street vendors but not much else. Nice vista and surrounded by interesting old buildings. Certainly worth a visit but not a lot to keep you there very long. Note that it is easier to buy rum than bottles of drinking water.

A place to share with other travelers and get the insight into the Cuban life and deals. A place where you can always set up a meeting with friends and they all know how to get there. Many nice restaurants and the beer place are amazing.

This is a beautiful plaza surrounded by the most magnificent buildings in old Havana. I had a coffee at the Escorial, one of the corners of the Plaza. I sat outside so I could enjoy some "people watching". This plaza is very lively day and night. It was a good way of experiencing Cuba and its people.
