I was excited about visiting the University in Havana as it is central to much of the history of Cuba. Unfortunately, the University has seen much better days. During my visit, there was only one bathroom working in the Humanities building, with notices about upcoming repairs that were months old posted around the lobby. What was most dissapointing was the condition of the library. About half of the card file was missing, and the older books were in very bad shape. For a researcher it was distressing to witness such disregard for the past. While it is a nice diversion from the touristy environs of Old Havana, the University needs a major infusion of repairs to prevent further decay. Don't allocate much time out of your visit for a stroll through the campus.
