“Good museum, staff less great”
Reviewed January 18, 2013

The building itself is very nice and to see Cuban art in a retrospective was very very intresting. If you don't have much time in Havanna, skip something else and come here. This art you don't get to see everywhere. The only down side is the staff, there are many of them present all the time, but they don't know or care about the art and they are rude when approached. They obviously wanted to go home early that day, since they started to close the museum quite early and were asking people to leave. When I went to the Ladies room, most of the staff was there doing their hair and make-up. This was still 15-20 minutes before official closing time!

“Amazing collection...”

... but a little overwhelming if you don't know much about Cuban art. Still, fascinating. The historical spectrum, from colonial times to Wilfred Lam to present day -- wow. Maybe make this a two-visit trip, if you're into art. Note: they don't have a floor plan -- can be confusing.

“Don't take an SLR.”
Reviewed January 12, 2013

Cameras are verboten. Even though I know some of the staff, I haven't been able to cajole my way in with a decent camera. I am surprised that TripAdvisor doesn't have these listed with both addresses. The older art is generally in the the older building and the newer in the newer building by the Museum of the Revolution...an exception recently when the museum by Parque Central had a wonderful modern sculpture in the foyer during the Once Bienal in May of last year.

“Impressive collection of Cuban art”
Reviewed January 12, 2013

I took my family to see the Cuban art collection of the Museum and they were amazed by the variety and richness of it. As a Cuban I was familiar with the artists and their background, but it would be helpful if more explanations were provided in English. It is recommended that you read a bit ahead so at least you know which names to look for, because it is a big museum with lots of art. If limited time, skip the oldest section and head directly to the more modern and contemporary art, where the big names such as Wilfredo Lam, Mariano, Amelia Pelaez, Servando Cabrera, Rene Portocarrero and others are. Very recommended.
