“Great Place to Stay in Havana”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

Ivette and Alejandro have 2 houses next door to each other, one with 5 rooms and the other with 3. My room was the front room in the house with 3 rooms, and I had my own bathroom and the most comfortable bed I slept in during my trip to Cuba! Ivette, Alejandro, their daughter and their dad, as well as Mirella, the housekeeper were amazingly helpful. Ivette showed me the best route to walk to old Havana, where most of the sites are. They were also very helpful with recommendations of where to go out in the evening.

I was traveling on my own, and they made sure to introduce me to the other solo travelers in the Casa, who I ended up hanging out with during the rest of my stay.

Breakfast was plentiful with fruit, bread, a fried egg, coffee and juice.

I opted to stay in and eat dinner most nights as well. It was quite pleasant home cooking. They can accommodate most diet requirements too. Another Casa guest during my stay was Jewish and they were able to make sure he could keep kosher-ish. I ate fried shrimp, beef stews, lobster and chicken. Dinners were very filling and often I could not finish my plate. Then there was dessert!

We stayed in la casa Purpura for a total of 8 nights during our stay in Cuba. "We" are mom, dad and our 1 year old daughter. Alejandro and Ivette gave our stay a great touch with their enthusiasm, advice, conversations and help during our stay. They were also very helpful in letting us stay in the common room in the afternoon outside of the "opening hours". Our daughter got a whole lot of attention, and she enjoyed every minute of it!

Breakfast and dinner are good and the rooms are clean.
The location is great, next to the Malecon and Habana Vieha. Everything is within walking distance. The neighbourhood is colourful and lively, we spent many hours on the balcony watching the streetlife after the little one had gone to sleep.

Without hesitation we will recommend this casa to our friends if they need a place to stay in Habana.

Three buddies from Turkey, traveled to Cuba after five years of planning and we end up in La Casa Purpura. It is tiny, simple and clean, this is all one could expect at most, from a small B&B without any glitches. But what makes it "our home in Havana" is Dr Alejandro and Yvette, they are the excellent and warmest hosts one would expect. Alejandro is the best guide for Cuba one would find and depend upon. Without any hesitation, if we have the chance to visit Havana again, we will stay in La Casa Purpura for sure. Muchos Gracias Alejandro, Yvette and Oswaldo. Hope to see you again...

We stayed in the Casa Purpura in March 2013. Alejandro and Ivette both speak excellent English are wonderfully informative and helpful. Their daughter Daymila cooks an evening meal if you want it and it is as good as any other Cuban food you are likely to find. The communal dining room and balcony is really nice, sitting on the balcony watching Cuban life below and seeing the sea at the end of the street is a lovely way to end the afternoon or begin the evening. Breakfasts are fine, fresh bread, fruit salad, omelette and as much coffee and fruit juice as you want.

On our arrival Alejandro showed us some local useful shops and both he and Ivette gave useful advice on staying safe. He was also a really interesting source of information about life in Cuba and what it is like to live there.

The steps up to the rooms are steep so it wouldn't suit anyone with difficulty walking. This also applies to the Casa next door which they also own (it's a coral pink not sure what it is called).

At the purple house you will arrive as friends, and leave as family. The hosts Doctor Alejandro and Ivette are good people, who will take care of you, and make sure that you have everything you need. They will tell you about all the interesting places in the city, and gladly show you some of them if they have spear time. Ivette and Alejandro can even arrange trips for you to go outside Habana. If you for example want to visit the lovly village of Vinjales, they can arrange a driver to take you there, and for you to stay at friends of them for a while.

The purple house is a safe and clean place to stay. I recommend it especially for families and couples that want to stay in the old, authentic part of Havana. It is a perfect base for exploring the rest of Habana and Cuba!

We are a couple from Norway who travelled to Cuba for two weeks in February 13.

In advance we booked the room in La Casa Purpura for just four nights, as we hadn’t planned the stay in full detail. After just one day in Cuba and after Alejandro’s very helpful and interesting tour in Habana vieja, we asked if we could have the room for two weeks, and that was arranged without any problem. When we travelled around Cuba for shorter trips (one to three nights), we just kept most of the luggage in the room and was able to do whatever we wanted, whenever it suited us.

Alejandro helped us with buying bus tickets, he arranged a casa in Varadero for us, he ordered a taxi to the airport, and he seem to have contacts all over the city. We also had a number of interesting talks and discussions about Cuba. :) He is more helpful than anyone can expect or ask for, and he is also very energetic, sympathetic and agreeable.

The room we had was not big, but it fulfilled our needs with en-suite-bathroom and a double bed which was not at all bad. There is air condition in the room, and the hot water worked all the time. Just one window with no view, but it really didn’t matter for us. A working fridge in the room.
The location is great, with just a short walk to Havana Vieja. It was interesting for us to stay in a house in Centro Havana, as you see more of the «normal cuban life» in these streets than you do in Habana Vieja.
We had dinner in the house a couple of times, and the food was great. The daughter of Alejandro and Ivette is a student at daytime, but she is also a great cook. This is without doubt a resourceful family.
We had a great time and will definitely stay at La Casa Purpura if (or when) we go back to Habana.
