We did not have high expectations of finding a charming, fairly priced, professional bed and breakfast in Havana. Fortunately we were wrong. Rosa D'ortega is a beautifully decorated, colonial house. Others have called it more like a boutique hotel rather than a B and B which is correct. We booked the the ground floor suites and they are decorated on par with high end B and Bs in Tuscany but a bit damp. So if you have sensitivity to damp book a room higher up in the house. Very fairly priced. We stayed in the Hotel Nacional, for example, and we found Rosa D'ortega much better value.
The swimming pool is spotless, small but well sized for the property and a rarity in a B and B. The breakfast was delicious and varied. Staff were beyond accommodating especially the breakfast staff and the security guards. The neighbourhood is safe. Having a security guard at Rosa D'ortega is more about travellers' paranoia than the actual reality of Cuba which is super safe. They recommended a neighbourhood restaurant that turned out to be fabulous. Chic 50's decor (think decco not Vegas) and a super grill. The neighbourhood La Vibora is an easy location to find in a rental car or under $10 CUC cab ride to the boardwalk.More
