“Very Nice Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2013

The maids leave the most amusing towel sculptures. The location is perfect for walking to the Malecon and Old Havana. The room was a nice size. Bring an alarm clock because there is no clock in the room and the front desk call is inaudible.

Room Tip: If you don't mind a bit of street noise, get a room overlooking the street. The people watching...

I have been to Havana before but this was my wife's first trip. We loved the hotel which is opposite central park and has easy access to all the sites of old Havana. Service was very good, prices were reasonable and the room was superb with views over Malecon Drive and Central Park. Live music for breakfast and fresh food. Hotel bar was good also. Would certainly stop there again.

Room Tip: Ensure you get an outer room as the views are great.

The hotel is in a fantastic location, in Parque central, which is superb for exploring Habana old town. We stayed here for 3 nights at the start of our trip before heading down to Varadero for a week on the beach.

Before we went I emailed the hotel to ask if it was possible to have a room on the first floor overlooking Parque Central as this was to be a pre wedding break. When we arrived we were met by the reception staff who were friendly and pleasant. A porter to us up to our room and to our absolute delight it was a room on the first floor, every better when we were ushered in by the porter, we had been given a suite. There was a small sitting room with TV and balcony then into the bedroom which was huge and beautifully decorated, an enormous king size bed, tv and two balconies. it has two bathrooms one with a Jacuzzi bath, there was a reasonably priced mini bar providing water soft drinks and beer. We were bed and breakfast, the breakfast was buffet style in the restaurant with live music playing every morning. We had drinks and snack style lunches in the bar (the bar area is beautiful) we found the staff to be very friendly and obliging.

I would recommend the hotel, a perfect start to our trip.

Thanks to all at the Telegrafo for making our stay a wonderful experience.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a room on the first floor facing Parque Central, these have small balconies, a li...

The hotel is in a fantastic location, in Parque central, which is ideal for exploration of Habana Veija (old town), or Centro. It is also a five minute walk from the start of the Malecon ocean drive/walkway. We stayed here for 4 nights.

The room was large and well maintained, with a reasonably priced mini bar providing water and beer (and other beverages).

Having spent 6 days in Varadero with no Internet,we noticed upon check in a wifi router at the front desk. When we asked for the password, we was told it was only for the communal computer in the lobby area. When we asked for passwords to access the communal computers, we was told they had run out of passwords. I thought this was rather anal, and I believe all hotels should offer free WIFI to guests.

Compared to the staff at the hotel we stayed at in Varadero, the staff at hotel telegrafo where particularly miserable. The tour guide seemed to want to do anything but sell their tours to you! The tour guide sent us to the hotel angleterra a couple of builds away to book a cigar factory tour. (Even the tour guide here was reluctant to sell us their tours!)

The hotel lobby area is very nice, and there is also a nice bar in this refurbished building.

The breakfast could of had more variety, I stuck to omelettes each morning as it appeared the safest option. There was also a two piece band playing each morning. If you want to avoid this go for breakfast about 0930. There is only so much Casio keyboard you can listen to when waking up.

Finally when in Habana, get used to being pestered for a taxi or a cigar. This happens directly outside the hotel door, with the hotel taxi partner. If I want a taxi I will ask for one, and I would not expect to be harassed day and night for a taxi by the persons from the taxi company associated with this hotel.

Room Tip: Request a first floor room facing Parque central, these have balconies. I requested one but was give...

Having never been to Cuba before, we were not sure quite what to expect but everything we had been told was extremely positive and so the whole family set off optimistically and with lots of enthusiasm.

The Hotel Telegrafo happened to be our very first experience of Cuban hospitality and we were not disappointed.

We have as a family stayed in many hotels around the world but the Hotel Telegrafo far exceeded anything I personally might have fantasized about or otherwise imagined. Aesthetically it could not be improved upon and fitted in superbly with the old colonial building that flanked it smack in the centre of old town Havana. Indeed, it proved to be the perfect location as a base and for getting around this vibrant city

To say the Hotel Telegrafo was nothing short of excellent for the price would be an understatement, it being an eclectic mix of old colonialism and new but understated enterprise.

The rooms were spacious, airy, clean well maintained and fantastically furnished. Our chambermaid was always prepared to assist and she took 'towel art' to a whole new level with different characters and scenes to welcome the traveller home after a day exploring the secrets of Havana.

Both the Bistro bar and restaurant were fantastic not only with regard to what they delivered whether it be a local Cuban speciality or more international dish. The breakfasts and evening meals were some of the best we have ever had in terms of variety and choice and included a range of hot and cold dishes. I particularly enjoyed the lime marinated seafood 'even for breakfast' - The drinks could not be faulted either and although not compulsory, it was necessary to try the great local cocktails which were all reasonably priced for a hotel of this calibre.

This review would not be complete without a positive reference to the many staff employed and associated with the Hotel Telegrafo to whom we owe so much because it was their collective efforts that made our stay there so very enjoyable, this applies to the kind and courteous reception team, bell boys, waiters, barmen and of course the live saxophonist and pianist that played such delightful and appropriate mood music throughout breakfast and evening meals without interfering with conversation or the business of enjoying one's meal.

To this end, the 'Pettitt' family all wish to extend one big collective thank you and hope to return again in the future.

All Good Things, Neville Pettitt

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the city have particularly nice views.

Stayed at the hotel for 2 nights, location is perfect round the corner from the capitols and a short walk to old Havana. Room was clean and adequate for our stay the room overlooked the main road and we didn't hear much noise.

Bar area is all old stone arches and a nice place to sit and relax.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
GeneralThe historic city hotel was established in 1860 and was then located on Calle Amistad. Around 1888, it was relocated to its present position on the busy corner of Prado and Neptuno streets. In 1911 the hotel was completely rebuilt, and when it reopened it was regarded by the press of the day as the most modern hotel in the city and ranked amongst the top eleven hotels in Latin America. The hotel of today combines modern and colonial elements in its architecture to create a wonderful unity of present and traditional styles. On offer are a total of 63 comfortable guest rooms with excellent views out over the city. The inner courtyard with the original brickwork of its arches forms an interesting contrast to the new design features. The hotel has a large ceramic mural in the form of a collage, showing elements of Havana's colonial architecture and a fountain which appears to magnify the courtyard and its surrounding ruins. There are 54 standard rooms, three suites, and six junior suites available, in addition to a lobby area with a reception desk manned around the clock, a hotel safe, a cloakroom, a currency exchange facility, and lift access. Guests at this air-conditioned establishment may also take advantage of the restaurant, the snack bar, shop. Also available here is room service (charges apply), a public Internet connection (charges apply), and parking for those arriving by car (charges apply). MasterCard and VISA are accepted as methods of payment.Surrounding AreaA famous institution in Havana since 1888, this hotel has since the early 20th century been considered one of the best in all Latin America. It lies directly beside the beach and is only a few minutes on foot from the ''Museo de Bellas Artes'', the ''Capitolio'', and the ''Gran Teatro de La Habana'', famous for presenting the best opera and ballet performances in the city.Property-InformationThe elegant hotel restaurant specialises in Cuban and international haute cuisine. Its decoration creates a unique place with a classical ambience, ready to welcome guests back at any time. Its appointment with modern furniture creates a timeless atmosphere in the halls with stained glass windows. The restaurant is situated on the ground floor of the building and offers guests a breakfast buffet or an individual breakfast, lunch à la carte, lunch from a set menu (offered for groups), and a set menu in the evening.Room-InformationAll rooms are fitted with an en suite bathroom with a bathtub and hairdryer, centrally regulated air conditioning, a double or king-size bed, cable TV, a telephone, a room safe, a minibar, and either a balcony or terrace as standard. ... more   less
