“Best place to stay in Havana”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2013

This is a very nice hotel and I think the best place to stay in Havana. Although there are more expensive and luxurious hotels you could choose, the colonial architecture of the building embodies a great sense of nostaligia. This sense of nostalgia is reinforced in the large downstairs lobby area, where photos of past residents such as Al Capone are dotted about.
The upstairs restaurant also has great views of the Capitolio. Rooms were very spacious and clean.
On the downside, the building does require some maintenance and the staff are not very friendly. Although breakfast was nice, the food from the downstairs cafe was terrible. I didn't bother trying the upstairs restaurant after that experience.

the hotel was built in the mafia period in Cuba and has 8 floors with a roof restaurant above floor 8. the room was large with 2 beds pushed together, one mattress was awful but the other was much better. during a thunderstorm while I was on floor 8 facing the river the water was blown under both windows and flooded part of the bedroom. hot water in the shower was hit and miss. overall the room and bathroom were clean, there were 2 televisions and the A/C worked!! breakfast was run of the mill and little variation but the quality was acceptable. when the hotel was full if you went for breakfast after 0830 you may have to queue outside the dining room! each night there was a small group of musicians and singers in the roofless patio, excellent groups and plenty Cuban music played. the hotel is on the edge of the old quarter and very convenient for seeing the sights. the plaza of the revolution is outside the hotel and has items used by Fidel for the revolution and maintaining control of the country. it is the first hotel I have been in that has 2 chambermaids as the welcome note on the bed said?? or is it that when you leave tips you leave twice what you would normally do?? I only saw one chambermaid during the week, I think she was geared up for tourists!! all in all I would use the hotel again

Room Tip: get a high floor to have views of the city and away from the lifts as they are used throughout the 2...

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of a tour, the room itself was quite spacious, the bathroom was quite tired and dirty and could do with updating.
Good choice for breakfast everything from fruit, continental to items including chicken stirfry and spaghetti carbornara.

The hotel lobby bar is ok for a evening drink but can get quite loud with the bands they have on, we went to the bar on the top floor to find it closed.

The grandeur is definitely faded here, but its full of character and the location is good. Breakfast was not great - cold scrambled eggs are not nice! - but the staff were friendly enough and there is a pleasant bar in the foyer and outside pool on the first floor.

Very poor service at the reception desk and at breakfast and very dirty (example: bedcover, bathroom, carpets in the hall) The staff not kind at all ! Cold water in the bathroom ...I would never recommend this hotel.
In others hotels in Havana of lower category we had a wonderful experience. Forget this hotel once again

Cuban style. This is not a country to compare with anywhere else. The Hotel is in OK condition, hanging on to it's old colonil style but the rooms are a good size and the location is good.
Fantastic swimming pool with bar at street level. Good services available include WiFi 8CUC for 1 hour (expensive but sometimes necessary, works best with smart phones) A customer service guy who would phone through reservations etc (great if you are not a Spanish speaker). Currency exchange, I got a good rate for £'s.

Room Tip: Cubacirect booked us into the room next to a lift. Room Numbers ending in 07 are next to the servic...

The Hotel is really a wonderful Old renovated Hotel -105 years old! Its right in the center of old Havanna and everything is in a walking distance to see. It has a nice Patio with life music. The breakfast is ok, but sometime they run out of coffe or a certain fruit but they try to bring new plates as soon as possible. The rooms are ok. We enjoyed staying there.
