“Malecon sea location, not central to old town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2013

We had a good stay in this hotel as we were on a coach tour. The breakfast bar area is huge, no ambience what so ever but an amazing choice of food of good quality. Very much attracting an international clientele and the plaza could be very noisy when full. Best tip for the buffet is to be there early as you can and then you will find salmon, omelettes freshly cooked for you and plenty of everything else.
It rained and rained whilst we were there. Our room faced the Malecon overlooking the sea and yes the window leaked and the floor was wet but it didn't inconveinience us at all. We spent some time watching the sea crash over the road and flood the whole area. Yet still old cars drove thro it all.
There is a lovely pool, unheated and a cafe where we ate well and not too expensive for hotel food.
As far as the location is concerned , there are always taxis outside, take an official one and agree a price first. Common sense really. Do your research first.

Dear Mr./Mrs. lindylou49,

I really appreciate the gentleness of letting us know your point of view about our hotel.

Regarding the rain, it was raining for more than 48 hours and all Havana were affected, but I’m glad to know this situation didn't inconvenience you too much.

About the location, I am pleased to inform you our hotel offers a shuttle service to Old Havana free for all our guests, which has several frequencies at day.

Once again thank you very much for posting your comments and I hope to have the honour of receiving you in your next visit to Havana.

Best regards,

I would never recommend this hotel. While we were there, there was rain and many of the rooms' windows leaked. Also, we had bugs in our room. The location was fair. We would rather have been in walking distance of the old city or elsewhere where there are things to do and see outside your door. This hotel was isolated.

Dear Mr. / Mrs. Library2013,

First of all, I would like to thank you for posting your review on TripAdvisor and we regret not having been able to cover your expectations.

About the rain, allow me to inform you it was major force. It was raining for more than 48 hours and all Havana were affected. Regarding bugs in your room, I can tell you our hotel maintains a strict fumigation program, so, it must have been something specific which we would have liked to know during your stay.

In relation to the location, we want to comment you that our hotel offers a shuttle service to Old Havana free for all our guests, which has several frequencies at day.

I hope that in spite of these inconveniences, you honor us with your visit in a near future and give us the opportunity to change the negative opinion you took of us.

Best regards,

Its a beautiful looking building in a great location overlooking the Malecon. You can easily walk either way along Malecon and see interesting stuff. Rooms are fair, beds could be better, pool area is great, service is fine and food is overal, good. There are quite a few shops around the area, a little mall next door with a pretty good cafe/bar. This area is right on the edge of Miramar and about a 5 minute taxi drive from Viejo, quite yet lots of activity, but not too much. A good choice.

Nice hotel with good service level and near to the old Havanna. Clean rooms, and a excellent breakfastbuffe. The hamburger in the lobby bar was really good. Nice pool area. Easy to access a Taxi nearby the hotel, there is always a lot of them waiting outside. But ask for the price before leaving! Wifi for 14 CUC is a little to expensive, it should be free like it is everywhere else. (almost)

a huge store hotel, without any Cuban charm.Well organised and clean rooms, but the windows cannot be opened! Thus Always in a climatised atmosfere and the restaurants are icy.
a 6 km out of the centre of town near the Malecon.
Warm buffet food was cold exept the show cooking.
great breakfast.
Personnel cold and distant.
You can find in every big town a hotel as this.
Better is to smoke a Cohiba cigar and lodge in another hotel.

Room Tip: one without waterleak problems

I stayed at this hotel for three nights and decided to pay a little extra to stay at the «level» which is like executive floors where you have a separate reception at 20th floor with its own restaurant/bar. Here you can have your breakfasts, lunches and dinners. It’s a small restaurant but the breakfast is nice and has all the usual breakfast things. On arrival at the hotel we did not get a feeling that this is a 4 star hotel as there was no help available for our luggage. There were also no clear instructions as where to go to come to the level reception.
The hotel also has several other restaurants. I tried the med, the pool bar and the Italian restaurant. To the best food and service was at the Italian one. If you want more of a “Cuban” feeling I would recommend to go to old town. This hotel is located a bit far from old town and far from other restaurants. The only nice thing about the location is that it is close to the sea.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the sea side is ofcourse nice. If you choose to stay at "the level" you will...

First of all, I would like to than you for having taken part of your time to let us know your comments about your stay at Melia Cohiba.

Regarding the lack of help with your luggage and instructions as where to go to come to the level reception, it must have been a specific situation which will be analyzed with the personal involved.

The Melia brand does offer the assurance that at least administrative things are handled well. This hotel offers all you can expect from a decent to good business oriented hotel, with the exception of WiFi in the rooms (did not work in my room and probably not in many others either).

The positive: Good rooms, clean, good beds, very friendly and helpful staff (I stayed in the "executive" floor area), good breakfast buffet (not exceptional but quite good and excellent for Cuba standard). Good location, i.e. view to the ocean, not smack in old Havanna but reasonably close by taxi to anything (around 6 CUC from old havana to the hotel).

The negative: nothing really, apart from the wifi issue. But if you don't need it, not a problem. Also: 3 of the 6 elevators were being repaired. But despite being quite sold out, waits were not too long. But: don't expect a tropical paradise type of hotel. This one is very matter of fact-ish

Dear Mr. / Mrs. WiP,

Thank you very much for letting us know your opinion about our Hotel.

Regarding Wi-Fi in rooms, allow me to inform you we are carrying out many investment works which includes the renewal of technology, in order to improve the service we offer to our guests.

About elevators, I would like you to know we are in a process of change, which is in the final stretch and they will be working this December.

On the other hand, I inform you that we have a free service of a Shuttle available for our clients, which has different frequencies in the morning and in the afternoon. You can request the service to our Concierge Department, which with much pleasure will perform the necessary coordination.

We hope that Meliá Cohiba continues being your election for your next visit to Havana. It will be a pleasure to receive you again.

Best regards,
