“Excellent and Elegant Modern Hotel Near Malecon”
Reviewed May 6, 2012

I stayed at the Melia Cohiba at the end of a recent tour of Cuba. We had already experienced the excellent Melia Santiago in Cuba's second city and were expiating the Chiba to be of the same standard. It was. The location is interesting- not very far from the Malecon harbour front promenade drive and within easy walking distance of the Havana Riviera hotel, a famed Mafia hangout in the mid and late 1950s; the Vedado area is right nearby. Habana Vieja (6 Km away) required a short taxi ride, but there was plenty to see and do in the immediate area around the Cohiba and in the Vedado section of the city. This is a big hotel (22 stories and over 450 rooms). My room and the rooms of my clients were comfortable, elegant and modern most of them with views over the harbour and ocean (note that the power outlets are 220-240 volt European style); the public areas were very elegant (marble everywhere) with exuberant plants and shrubs and fine decoration-a real pleasure to walk around. Restaurants were excellent and the breakfast buffet in the Plaza Habana restaurant was exceptionally good. Didn't try the pools but reports of them were positive. As always in fancy hotels in Cuba the cost of internet service was much too high (about $14 or 15 for a couple of hours I seem to recall) and the speed was often poor. The elevators were also sometimes a problem.

This is a well run hotel with particularly large and comfortable rooms. The main restaurant (there are 3) is large yet with a welcoming ambience. The staff, whether restaurant or at reception, are very pleasant and give very good frinedly service. The food is quite varied and surprisingly good, particularly when placed beside the other 5 hotels we stayed in during a 2 week tour. Lifts can be a slow at times, but generally we didn't wait more than 2 or 3 minutes, which is OK in a 17 storey hotel.

The concierge staff are helpful, readily available and where you can book the free shuttles into the heart of the city. (One of them reminds me of Bette Middler, with a broad smile.)

Drinks are expensive compared with the city centre (3 pesos as opposed to to about 1.5 pesos). Wifi is available (not often so in the hotels we stayed) but only a 2 hour option at 14 pesos. It would be better to have a 30 min option for those who just want to make small use of the internet.

You can change your money at the Cadeca room, but the rate is very poor- 1.50 to the £, so better to get at the airport where you'll get 1.55. Cadecas don't seem to accept notes that have been scribbled on in any way, so check your notes before you arrive.

The pool area is quiet with numerous free loungers and free towels.

Meals can be expensive if not included in your booking, about 25 pesos for lunch. You can get a club sandwich for 12 pesos in a lobby bar, which is enough for two people. Alternatively try the Jazz Cafe at the top of the shopping centre a few yards for the hotel - set lunch meals with a drink for only 5 pesos. You can get your drinking water in the shopping centre too.

The hotel is right by the Malecon so a possible pleasant walk by the sea is possible. Taxis of all varieties, including old US cars are vailable outside. Don't bother with meters, just agree a price as you get in. No more than 8 pesos to the centre or 6 to the famous National Hotel. Taxi drivers are amenable, not the sharks you find in some other countries.

I stayed at the Melia Cohiba for 5 nights in mid April 2012. I was part of an Insights Cuba tour from the USA. My ratings take into account the fact that all hotels in Cuba face shortages and difficulties in achieving standards found in the rest of the Carribean and Central America. Twice there was a brief shortage of hot water, but the problem was fixed within a few hours. Some rooms have problems with A/C - if you get one immediately go and ask for another room - you will likely get one. The hotel was opened in '94/'95 and is starting to show its age given the economic difficulties in Cuba. If you go with reasonable expectation you will absolutely have a pleasant time. GREAT POOL!! Best Buffett Breakfast in CUBA!!

Dear Mr. rudy711,

First of all, I would like to thank you for sending us your opinions about the Hotel and the service in general, because it really gives us the elements to improve our daily work.

About air conditioning, I suppose it must have been a problem punctual in your room, which we wished you had communicated during your stay among us, in order to look for an immediate solution.

Once again, thank you very much for your comments and we hope to receive you again at Melia Cohiba Hotel in a near future.

Stayed at the hotel at the start and the end of the tour you walk in and there is a great big foyer all very nice ,you can convert money in the foyer but is slow ,on our travel this was the best place to us the wfi,as there is very little internet and is slower than the old dial up 14cuc for 2hrs just under £10,
Great rooms 2 double beds and a great shower always cleaned spotless and good maids, lifts can be slow, only had to walk the 11 flights once, there is a free laptop safe in the wardrobe which is great as ther was a charge at some we stayed in ,
Had dinner there 4 times and food is of good quality but could have been kept a bit warmer on the hotplates and there was show cooking with a variety of choice.Drinks were not the cheapest around so i would go over the road to the little 24hr shop for water and beer for the room as the mini bar was expensive.
If you were getting a cab into Havana don't pay any more than 10cuc try about 7 cuc seems a fair price for the distance and they have to make a living, the hotel does run a free mini bus services there and back about about 4or5 times a day each way.
This is great place to stay out of the city and very good quality. .

My husband and I have just returned from two separate stays in this very comfortable hotel. It does lack some of the traditional style of hotels in the Old Town but is a welcome retreat after the heat of sightseeing.

The positives: very clean, efficient reception staff, large and well attended foyer, doormen efficient, wide range of food choices including bucks fizz/cava during breakfast and smoked salmon (don't believe the guidebooks that say you will be living on Cuban rice and pork), show cooking, plenty of hot water, cable TV, great views of the Atlantic and/or city, lovely pool.

Some downsides: lifts can be slow and crowded as a result, can hear scraping from from other rooms due to tile floors, money is easy to change from £'s to CUC's but can be slow due to only allowing one customer at a time.

I would recommend this hotel and use again if visiting Havana.

Our tour operator booked our rooms at this hotel. Overall it was great and I can't complain. The rooms are clean, the maids are great, and each room has a safe inside.
They have a pool on the first floor but it definitely does not feel like you are down on the ground due to the first floor being above the lobby.
They have a buffet breakfast that was included in our package. I'm not sure if that's a standard deal but it had plenty of options (omelette station, fresh fruit, meat and cheeses, breads, etc,...)
It's close to the Malacon so that is an added bonus.
The only thing that I did not like about this hotel is the distance from Old Town Havana. It would have been nice to be within walking distance so at night you do not have to take a cab home. However, it is a very short and cheap cab ride.

Room Tip: Higher up rooms are supposed to be a bit nicer than the lower floors but there really is no differen...

Nice hotel with an impressive lobby and right on the Malecon for a walk or morning exercise (be careful the Malecon is slippery). The staff was friendly and efficient. Exchanging USD was easy at the fornt desk or the bank in the hotel. Internet was expensive ($14/2hours) but you could use the 'slow' internet inthe business center. Breakfast and dinner was good with a broad selection. Elevators were frequent and rooms were large with a safe. Room A/C was weak not reallying cooling off until the early morning hours. Room refigerator was not functional. 5 CUC cab ride to Old Town. Small 24 hour market across street for water and stuff. Pool area nice, hotel was clean and overall we had an enjoyable visit.
