Stayed here for 7 nights September 2012. Once arrived the man behind the desk was very helpful and friendly and ensured I settled in ok.

The room with its 12 foot door in green and white alongside the high ceiling was a real gem within this colonial mansion. The furnishings blended in nicely and even the bed quilt complemented the rest of the room. The bathroom was pleasant and I was impressed with the black floor tiling, however there is no door on the shower so you end up flooding the bathroom. My advice is to sit down.

Overall the cleanliness of the room was pretty good although the cleaner doesn't have much attention to detail. Cleaner is quite pushy for a tip.

The courtyard with its pleasant plants, chickens, peacock and house cat added some magic to this hotel that you can't get anywhere else.

Hotel staff work hard and are very pleasant. I made sure I left them plenty tips. I don't think the security guard appreciated me knocking the door at 2am when I stumbled in from a night out!

Breakfast was nice however the bread is a little dry. The eggs and bacon are lovely.

The location is ideal as its in the wonderfully restored old Havana with its cobbled streets and architecture. Close to many attractions including the Chocolate Cafe, Malecon, San Rafael Cathedral and around 15 mins walk to Parque Central. Many shops including a bank, cafe, supermarket and smoking shops all within vicinity.

My minor gripes of this hotel were the room was a little on the dark side and a Buffett breakfast would of been to more people's liking.

Overall this hotel is fantastic not luxury like a modern 5 star with the latest technology and comfort but a piece of colonial history and architecture you appreciate staying in.

This hotel is brilliantly located in the heart of Havana old town. It is situated in lovely converted colonial house with pretty court yard. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. Staff are nice, friendly and even helpful! Breakfast was good too. We eat in the restaurant too which was disappointing. Although this was our first meal in Cuba and perhaps we would have had a better food if we had sampled the mediocre we had elsewhere. I would highly recommend this place and it will not cost the earth!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Vegas Trinidad suite. It was great!

We (3 adults and baby 16mths) booked this lovely well located hotel for two nights at the beginning of a 2 week holiday. Hotel doesn't look much from the outside but great inside. You need to book as only a few rooms. Real taste of Cuba - old courtyard, high ceilings, magnificent doors, vast bedrooms, airy lobby and right in the middle of traffic free restored street on recommended walking route of old town in lonely planet. Staff were friendly and helpful - had two rooms - 1st floor no lift - one with adjacent bathroom with jacuzzi looking out on front and another internal room with shower, no windows. Both very clean, bathrooms quite good - hairdyer, soap shampoo. baby given a cot which unfortunately collapsed but we use used back up travel cot. Breakfast traditional - eggs, fruit, liquid yoghurt (on request) with chickens and resident peacock looking on lovely coffee. Restaurant in hotel with visiting musicians Ok but cafe round the corner is cheaper . Only criticism - bedroom maids a bit pushy for a tip.

Room Tip: Book before you go

My wife and I spent three days here and were pleasantly surprised, as we had been told that most Havana hotels were noisy and not up to standard. The room had all that we could wish for; comfortable beds and extras that we did not expect in Cuba. The very high ceiling plus a twelve foot door that dwarfed my five foot wife added to the charm. The hotel is well located, very clean and the staff helpful. We ate breakfast, a la carte but sufficient, in the courtyard with the occasional chicken running wild around us - not really a distraction. The restaurant was good value and the food well cooked, but despite this we were usually the only diners, which could have been because we do tend to eat early. My wife had lobster and I had steak, both of which were prepared just right. One thing that did make us laugh and is still a subject of banter was the 'chocolate mousse' we both ordered. When it arrived it turned out to be chocolate sauce; not what we expected, but very tasty, so be warned. The hotel was quiet and the only distraction was the peacock that strutted around the courtyard and acted as an alarm clock - again not very noticeable unless you are light sleepers. The hotel also appears to be on the tourist track and there were regular visitors to the courtyard and once even a coach party descended on us, but this is during the day when most people at the hotel are sightseeing themselves. I would recommend it as one of the quieter and more interesting hotels.

...but its not worth staying in. Considering the price, things should work. Like alleged internet, shower fittings etc. Really nice building but since its open to the public, it can be seen by dropping by.Ditto for the cigar shop. Breakfast and restaurant decent - ok wine selection available. Overcharged for minibar which was rarely abused.

In its defence, the location is great. And the rooms are grand.

And peacocks are great, except at 6am - don't plan on sleeping in!

Room Tip: stay away from the restaurant side...its noisier in the morning and evening.

This was a lovely place to stay, location is excellent, rooms large and the staff friendly. We had room two which is massive. It's not luxurious but the bathroom is fab and there are a number of bathrooms. English news channels on TV and free air con which is essential. The breakfast is a bit ropey, mostly fruit but try the eggs as they're very nice. There are birds in the courtyard and the whole place feels like real Havana rather than a European enclave. It's very central, everywhere is walkable. Buses can't stop here though so you'll have to walk a little round the corner to get tour buses, easily done. Don't eat in the restaurant!

Room Tip: Room 2 is huge and has a whirlpool bath

After a sub-par stay at the Hotel Raquel last year, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this nine-room property other than a good location. We were pleasantly surprised.

We had a huge, lovely room overlooking Mercaderes. The beds were comfortable and everything worked well. The staff were absolutely great. From the servers who did our made-to-order breakfast each morning, to the front desk and security staff, to the hotel bar staff (good mojitos!) to the workers repairing and painting the courtyard - everyone was friendly and helpful. We loved the location and really enjoyed starting our day with breakfast and ending it with a mojito in the centre courtyard.

I could, however, do without the peacock. Sure he's pretty but he makes a noise that sounds like someone is beating a cat with a bag of doorknobs at night. All night. Fortunately, I always travel with earplugs and my guy is a sound sleeper.

We would definitely return to Conde de Villanueva when we next visit Havana.
