We were seated in a small living room and welcomed directly with a very good mojito!

The waiter impressed us with reciting the (large!) menu by heart, however it made it hard to choose. The entradas were doubled with chef's suggestion, so that we were already satisfied before the main disk came.

And all surprisingly good!

We have to return to taste the deserts!

And this all for USD 55 for 2 persons.

Great new addition to Havana, El Partenon is part of the new crop of non-state owned restaurants (paladares) that have emerged over the last year. Javier Acosta, formerly of the (still) excellent El Palio, struck out on his own in early 2011 and opened El Partenon in his parents' house, in the Miramar/Playa area. Don't be put off by the Greek motif, the place is unpretentious, and the service friendly and attentive. Prices are very reasonable.

The restaurant is mostly Cuban. The regular menu is brief and has Cuban staples like ropa vieja, vaca frita, black beans-- all done the way they should be, with good ingredients, properly seasoned and with attention to detail. It surpasses anything else of its kind that we have had in Cuba over the last two years.

The off-the-menu items are always interesting. We had swordfish roe with blue cheese that somehow worked beautifully. There are bell peppers stuffed with crab, chicken or shrimps, and many other interesting entrees and appetizers.

Of course, you come here for the suckling pig. It truly is outstanding. It is fried whole until the skin is crispy, presented at the table and then served in a clay pot with all sorts of side dishes. The meat is lean and succulent, not greasy, and that skin is something else. You must request it in advance.
