This is a massive fort, probably the biggest Spain ever built in the New World. Make sure to catch the evening cannon firing exhibition each day around 9:00 PM.

A beautiful fort build by Spain and now they have a museum of el Che Guevara, the view to the city and the Malecon is worth it. Since colonial times the is a cannon fired every night at nine pm and is heard around the city is called EL Cañonazo

It's an imposing structure overlooking the sea and a major landmark in Havana. Each evening there's a simple ceremony at El Morro that is fun to attend.

Caught a cab over here ( 5 cuc there and 5 back). The cab got stopped by a guard, who said if we wanted to go to the 'viewpoint' we had to pay him 1 cuc. We did not want to do this, as there are plenty of viewpoints at El Morro, so declined his offer.

Enjoyed looking around the various exhibitions there. We went at about 18:30, which gave us plenty of time, to take in the exhibitions (armory etc), and walk around the castle walls, and then watch the sunset over Havana.

At 9pm, comes the firing of the cannon and a ceremony from soldiers. All good fun. A little tip, it gets really busy, and can be difficult to see what is going on, as it all takes place up on the parapet. We sat on a concrete bench (the 2nd row of two furthest from the parapet area), then when the action got going, you could stand on the bench and see everything. Because you were a little further away, you get a great angle. Alternatively, you could buy tickets on entry to some VIP chairs, but the view is not so good. Go for the free bench option! I also noticed some people up on the building directly behind, on the roof. That would also be great.

There is a neat bar done up like a pirates cove in one of the arches. Check it out.

This is definitely a must, at whatever time of the day you are able to go. The view onto Havana is breathtaking and gives you a sense of why the city was built there in the first place. Absolutely THE place to take photos covering the whole of the city from the port to the end of the Malecon
