The book sellers there add to the atmosphere here and you'll find all sorts of books in English as well about Cuba and its leaders. The other interesting thing about this place is the streets are paved not in stone but in wood. At first glance you'll not notice it but when you look carefully, you'll see wooden slates. This was apparently to reduce noise when horsecarts pass in front of the buildings.

“Books, books and more books”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2013

Lots of little stalls selling old books, mainly in spanish. Musicians often play jazz under the trees. Women, all dressed up in costume are willing to pose for a photo with you for a few pesos. We even saw a man with a dog who had a mouse on his head (the dog not the man). Both creatures looked very happy if not a tad silly!

“Overgrown but beautiful”

This square is lovely, of course, but the vegetation has got out of hand and obscures the buildings. No big deal. Enjoy it anyway.

“A must”

This second hand book market offers another insight into Havana life and its history. You can pick up old books at reasonable prices and they also have excellent old movie posters etc.

The stall holders are all generally friendly and will engage in conversation

“Plaza de Armas. A Treasure Chest of History”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2013

On certain days throughout the week vendors & private citizens gather under the shade trees in the old Plaza de Armas & set up a book & curio market. Some of the books are new & others are antiquarian treasures. The whole market is a treasure & you'll never know what you may find when strolling through. There were alot of interesting items from the pre-revolutions days. My son found old American baseball cards & I was able to pick up an old Spanish passport with revue stamps in and out of Havana to Miami just before the revolution began. The plaza itself is adjacent to the Palacios de los Capitanes Generales & is on the site where the city of Havana was founded. The area is well shaded by old growth trees and is actually a nice place to get out of the hot tropical sun.
