Description: The Castillo de Farnes is a non sophisticated bar and cafe placed in the corner of Monserrate Street, very near to the National Museum of Fine Arts and Manzana de Gomez five stars hotel. Its a place for people who decide to escape from business meals, fixed schedules, twitter and facebook mania, in order to just sit in a calm place, and watch the world of the city. Flags from several countries and cloth logos of soccer teams will welcome you to relax for a while, take a cortadito and order the best paella in town. The bartenders are very friendly, as they were in the times when Ernst Hemingway visited the place to talk about basque playball. Explore the tapas, small portions of spanish products, see the big screen to delight the world soccer games or just talk with the locals enjoying cheap and good cuban beers.

“Probably the best meal I've eaten in Cuba.”
Reviewed November 18, 2010

This place was discovered by accident. It is located across the street from the Cuban bank where I exchanged some Canadian dollars. After spending the day roaming through Havana the guys were looking for some lunch, shade and beer but not necessarily in that order though.

A very nice patio with awnings. There are a large number of individuals begging along the road if you sit on the patio but the staff moves them along in a very friendly manner. Also, we where approached by coyotes wondering if we wanted to buy cigars, amongst other things. Their approach was friendly but we were left alone once we let them know we were not interested. My view on the begging and coyotes: If either of these bother you, don't leave the resort as Havana is overrun. Actually, don't leave home as Cuba, in general, is rift with both beggars and coyotes.

We arrived around 2 in the afternoon and ordered drinks, After 30 minutes we asked for the menu. Our waiter informed us that food would not be available since the kitchen was overworked when 2 extra busloads of tourists arrived. There is a back room restaurant behind the bar that seats 50 or 60. We informed the waiter that we wanted lunch so we would take our bill and move along. Amazingly, food was now available.

The price fixe lunch was $6 CUC. A choice of 3 entrees, roasted chicken, pork chops, and a roasted whitefish. When asked what type of fish, the response was fish. I do speak Spanish and the waiter spoke English so it wasn't a language barrier issue. They just didn't know. Our table ordered the roasted chicken and pork chops.

The price fixee includes soup, the entree and a dessert. Both dishes were served with rice and beans and the ubiquitous Cuban shreaded cabbage salad. Sides could be changed as well. The food was flavourful and fully cooked. I have had medium rare chicken and pork in Cuba and must say that I have not developed a taste for it. All meals were delicious and should I visit Havana again, I would return here. Local beer is $1.50CUC

“Our favourite place in Havana”
Reviewed November 2, 2010

We just loved coming here. It became our favourite place in Havana. You can dream the day away in the bar (in the sun or shadow) with a really good coffee or Marguerita and a little snack or have a good meal in the restaurant in the back. We had our best (and cheapest) meals on Cuba in the Castillo de Farnes. It was one of the few places where you didn't feel ribbed off. The staff is very friendly and attentive. You should try the sweet potatoe chips and the veal!
