“The Worst MEAL we Had”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2012

We chose this as it was apparently a "5" star restaurant. It looked terrific...but the food was definitely not worth the price. It was our most expensive meal and definitely not "5" star by any stretch of the imagination!

“excellent restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 23, 2012

while in havana we visited the cafe del orient three times..simply because the food was good, the ambience excellent and the service prompt and polite.Havana isnt known for its fine dining but there are some diamonds in the rough..this being one..la guarida being another.
The price of the meal wasnt too bad either and there was live music too.
i thought the french soup was good but maybe thats just me(its not paris). I also thought the water was complementary but it wasnt...this was the only flaw, although if you look hard enough you can always find something wrong

“Finally a good meal in Havana”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2012

When visiting Cuba december 2011 we were quite surprised to find that most meals we had were really bland, poorly executed or plain awful. This place stood out as a small gem. The meals we had weren't fantastic by "normal" standards, but compared to everything else (except cuban black beans and rice), it was the best tasting food we had on the island. Not a lot of other guests on our nights, so service was excellent as well. The restaurant is worth a trip for the interior alone.

I would recommend the crêpe Suzette dessert; they dim the lights in the restaurant as they burn out the pan. Quite fun.

“Good, with some flaws”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2012

This is one of the most expensive restaurants in Havana. It is a government-run (Habaguanex) restaurant, but one of the better ones. The location, the tables and the interior (think classical French restaurant) are all good and well executed in this newly restored place. Service and food is hit-and-miss. During the week when there is not much going on, the service and food can be great (i.e. Brochette with three kinds of meat, Beef, pork, chicken). Saturday nights the place is packed and there are just too few service people available and waits can be (too) long. Meats are imported, the kitchen crew seems to know there stuff, service can use help on busy days. Soups are always mediocre, don’t order (French ‘au gratin’ onion soup, or equally mediocre the Lobster and shrimp bisque). 10% service charge and the water will be automatically added to your bill.

“I loved this restaurante.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2012

It was clean, great atmosphere, reasonably priced and it had something other than seafood! It is a bit dressier then the other restaurants I went to but it had great service, good food options and a piano!
