Gran Caribe Club Atlantico

Reviewed February 17, 2013

I just returned from one week at Hotel Atlantico. Expecting the worst, having read many reviews here & elsewhere, this is actually a great hotel choice for visitors seeking all incl beach resort (fantastic beaches), great nightly entertainment, and close proximity to Havana for culture & city tours etc (Hotel provides 2 shuttles back/forth a day). Food was also much better than expected, one must visit cuba with open mind, knowing its limitations. The Food was surprisingly quite good considering what I heard before. Even my friend commented the same.Breakfast in particular was always our fave. My advice, stay away from undercooked meats or anything that looks gross. Also avoid large leafy veggies, seafood(in particular fish). I mostly ate vegetarian/salads dinners, little meat like chicken, roast pork, occasionally clams/calamari. But generally it was healthy, filling & good. After few days my friend didnt listen and started overeating things like fish & fruits with skin (best to eat peeled fruits like papaya, pineapple). He had diareah the last few days & then just stopped eating. Often we did beach in mornings, then Havana, early afternoon, then stayed in Hotel at Nights since they have nightly shows, bars etc. This resort is gay friendly, and adult minded, singles, couples, all ages (you dont see many kids which was good), it wasnt too crowded or loud. There were good day & night activities...and the beach & sand was fantastic. In cuba tourists tend to pity cubans and tip for everything. My advice, be very cautious tipping hotel staff, they are already the most privilidged workers in cuba- having access to luxery of tips. Its OK if you tip discreetly for great (regular) service, but to tip out of pity and spoil some workers into thinking if they fetch you a soup bowl, when none is out on the table for guests- they should be tipped, in my view is ridiculous. . Rooms were also OK and clean- everything worked.Overall this was a great trip.

Dear customer:

Please let us know your opinion and experience in the period in which they stay at our facility. Indeed as you mention we are a country that we care hygiene cautiously, keeping a tight grip on the washing and sanitizing of all meats and vegetables, made by our doctors daily sampling of food a day to maintain good health our customers and our reputation. The Atlantic Hotel is old, small but friendly welcomes anyone who wants to feel at home as our staff has an admirable preparation and charisma. The management is proud that her trip to our country and the Atlantic hotel was great.

Great deal to visit La Habana and have the tranquility of the beach.
Free shuttle 2 times per day to go visit La Habana. Great beach, beautiful sand and water.
Food acceptable...nothing fancy. You need to reserve and go to the grill-restaurant near the beach. Much better than the buffet.
You have to give tips to barmen and waiters, they will REAAAALLLYYY appreciate that and we'll be thankful.

Read review thought it can't be that bad, it is terrible. Dirty rooms, staff unfriendly don't care and rude. Rooms dirty, ants, worn tired and inspected six others all the same. If you value your holiday time don't go. Beach wonderful. Cuba left us cold.

if you want to be as close as possible to havana with a beautiful beach, then this is the place. only 20 minutes away from havana and the beach here is beautiful. However, the hotel does have some issues. Food is just tolerable and gets the job done to fill the stomach!! Service corresponds with the star rating. Rooms are clean and adequate. however, there are no elevators in the hotel. They have some very nice dance shows in the evenings which are worth getting involved in for entertainment. If you are a 'cancun' type of person, you would never go here. But if you like Cuba, then you will come back again!!

What a fantastic vacation we had! My boyfriend and I both love Cuba, so we're very pleased everytime we go. We like to experience the "simplicity of life" the country has to offer.

The staff at the hotel was absolutely delightful. Again, if you know how to smile and how to tip once in a while, you'll get nothing but kindness in return. The beach was fantastic, nice and quiet, also very clean. Gorgeous water!

The tourists there were much older (60-70's) than us (30's) in majority - i.e. not a party resort, not very many younger people. Santa Maria del Mar is a quiet village in which we enjoyed taking long walks just before supper time. No Cubans around, except for those who work in the area. For the REAL party, you can step out to Guanabo village, a 5CUC/10 mins taxi ride, where there's an awesome outdoor nightclub. And of course, there's the one and only La Habana where you can seriously have quite the fantastic time, both for dining and clubbing! Wow!

The food was just fine, we are cooks, so we managed to be creative with what he had. Never were sick and never were famished.

The price we paid was ridiculously low for January... We can't begin to tell you how amazing the vacation turned out to be and that's because yes, we speak Spanish, love salsa, the Cuban culture & made amazing and so sweet Cuban friends. The whole purpose of choosing this hotel was to be able to go to La Habana (free shuttle every day!) & "get lost" in the capital every single day we were there. So precious and I'm very grateful we had this opportunity!!

Stepping out of your comfort zone is the key: how refreshing!!! If you can't handle that, don't choose our island!

If you want a vacation that combines beach and city touring, this is the best place close to Havana that will fit the bill (and not break your bank account).
The hotel is basic, very clean and the food is simple but good. If you expect 5* service go elsewhere.
The beach part: there is direst access to a beach that is supervised all the time so you won't be harassed by locals.
The city part: the hotel runs a free shuttle 3 times a day. If shuttle times don't work for you there is a tourist bus stop within 100m walking distance- runs every 30min from 9 to 6pm(check posted timetable), takes you right in front of the Capitolio in Havana.Costs 5 CUC, ticket valid whole day. And if you get to spend a late night in the city, a cab fare to the city is 15-20 CUC depending of time of day and availability.

I booked my first trip to Cuba at hotel Atlantico not knowing what to expect. I chose this hotel because it was the only one directly on the beach with multiple daily shuttle bus services to Havana. I also like smaller hotels so the line ups are not huge.

Being a 3.5 star hotel I was a bit reluctant after what I heard from friends and colleagues about the low quality of Cuban hotels, however my travel agent told me that one of her clients went to this hotel several times and he enjoyed it every time, so I decided to take my chances.

The hotel room is OK. It won’t pass the tough critics, but it will be OK with those who see the hotel room as a place to sleep. The room had a working A/C, fridge and satellite TV. A safe was also available for 2 CUCs per day. The paint job wasn’t so great, the curtains weren’t mounted properly and the bathroom handle came out when I tried to pull it hard to lock the door. Room service cleaned and moped the room every day and changed the towels. This sounds like an obvious thing, but I am mentioning because in some reviews I saw people complain that room service wasn’t done and in some cases they had to pay extra for it.

The food was ok, in my opinion at least. They had a lot of variety of meats, fish and salads. It is all you can eat. For dinner, they always had someone playing music or singing. They had 2 “special” restaurants that were available to you if you booked an all-inclusive package. The foods in those restaurants were limited and personally I preferred the main restaurant. The dinner restaurant was a closed room that was incredibly boring. The lunch restaurant was in a terrace on the beach, so you can have lunch with a great view. With this restaurant you had to reserve the day before and it had limited spaces. Be careful though. It is tempting to choose the table with the best view, but with the wind the chips fly as soon as the waitress places it on the table and half your plate is gone ☺

With the all-inclusive package you could borrow their kayaks, catamaran and bicycle, but they always claim that it is too windy. I guess they worry about people damaging the equipment, but after asking for the kayak on a daily basis, they eventually caved in and decided to lend it to me. The pool is cleaned every day and the water was partially replaced once when I was there, but mostly children used it. They also had two tennis courts. The beach has very clean white sand that they cleaned every morning. The water is also clean, but the wind was a bit high at times. You would still be able to swim. There were no place to snorkel, unless may be you can convince the guy responsible for the catamaran to take you far into the deep water there is a place there.

The hotel offered dance lessons, Spanish lessons and had a crappy gym room that was flooded with sewage. I didn’t care for any of that.

On the other hand you could drink as much as you want rum, whiskey, beer, coke, whatever they had.

You need to reserve the bus in case there is too many people planning on visiting the city on that day, but I never had problem going. The bus driver (as well as hotel employees in general) are very nice and polite. The trip to Havana is about 30 minutes from Atlantico with the bus driver stopping to pickup and drop off employees along the way. The drop off area is in near Plaza de Cathedral and Plaza de Armas which is were you want to be. Once the driver drops you off, you have about 3 hours which is a lot to see the amazingly beautiful city of Havana.

You are expected to checkout before noon, however they’ll let you keep the all-inclusive bracelet until your bus arrives, so we were able to have lunch around 1:00 as we usually did and you can also drink or go to the beach.

Overall I think it’s a great hotel and I would go again. I met some people who tried different hotels, but stayed at this one for 3 and 4 times.

Room Tip: Pick your room in the main building because it is closer to the beach and the restaurant is right be...
