“Decent stay”
Reviewed April 29, 2013

The hotel is close to the beach. The pool is very galaxies. It is good for a group of small friends. I had a comfortable stay in Feb 2013. The rooms were clean and well kept as compared to other hotels that I had gone to. I was happy staying here. The staff is very hospitable and friendly. They are always willing to help you. This is what you call true hospitality !!

We spent seven days at Hotel Presidente and if you do your research you'll realize that it isn't really that out of the way as some have indicated. Hotel Presidente is in the neighborhood of Vedada, closest to Centro Havana (5 minutes by cab), followed by the neighborhood of Old Havana (8 minutes by cab). These three neighborhoods all line the Malecon - the strip of ocean - and if you are adventurous and like to walk you could walk to Old Havana in about 40 minutes. There is a hop-on, hop-off bus right outside the hotel which will take you to all the sites. When riding the hop-on, hop-off it takes about 30 minutes to get to Old Havana but it's so worth it and cheap - only $5 CUC for the whole day.

Our favourite thing about the location was it was QUIET! Old Havana is a zoo with people everywhere and a lot of street vendors - they don't leave you alone. The sites are well worth it but by the end of the day we were happy to get back to Vedado and the Hotel Presidente. The pool doesn't get sun until the afternoon so it's perfect to come back to at the end of the day, lay back, relax and have a mojito. The neighborhood is a little more upscale and people don't bother you when you walk it. If you go out the side exit and walk about 4 blocks down you'll come across a little outside neighborhood pub where beer is only $1 CUC. It's family run and very friendly.

The hotel itself is old but very charming. The beds are comfortable, the bathroom's are better than I expected with excellent water pressure! (Speaking of bathrooms, be prepared when you go out to take tissue and change, the public bathrooms are gross and you will find a lady at each one, dolling out toilet paper and expecting change to use the facilities).

The breakfast buffet was adequate but really nothing to write home about - nice to have though so that you could put something in your belly before heading out for the day. People say the food in Cuba is lousy but I would disagree. They are many restaurants close to the Hotel that are private and the food is excellent - and you can walk there. Jorge, the bellboy at the Presidente is an excellent source for sharing information on good eats in Vedado. In fact he is a good source for everything - need to know where to go, looking for cigars or a cab - talk to Jorge - he won't do you wrong, nicest guy ever!

Overall our experience at the Presidente and in Vedado was great, but it depends on what you're looking for. We would go back again and were so pleased that we chose this location and this hotel. Remember to tip the bell-boys and maids - they count on the extra money and will go the extra mile for you.

Room Tip: Rooms on the southside face the pool and ocean and are quieter. There is a school across the street...

I should have looked more closely at the bad reviews-you would be better off, for a sense of history of staying at hotel national or in Havana Vieja area where there are numerous hotels/ hostals/ casas-the front desk service was woeful and the women quite rude. The breakfast was OK. They seem to cater for tour groups here. The hop on/ hop off bus stops outside the main entrance and the hotel is situated two blocks from the Malecon (Esplanade). The interior is still original but not up to the interior of hotel nacional

This hotel would be considered very average in most cases. However, as for Cuba this hotel is excellent. The staff is very professional and attentive. The breakfast buffet is quality and the pool bar food is actually very good.The amenities are in a dilapidated state and many things need repair. My shower pressure was extremely low but I knew other people who had excellent showers that I was able to use. The pillows are not very good and the mattresses leave something to be desired. If the shower had the calcium removed from the nozzle the room would have been excellent. The rooms and design of the hotel are amazing. I was given a corner room (902) which had amazing views of the city.

Room Tip: Select a corner suite at least 6th floor, looking towards Avenida de los Presidentes y Malecon, amaz...

I spent 10 days at the "Presidente", starting on Feb 20. I have stayed there before, and have always been impressed by the quality of the people who work there. From the terrific front-desk staff to the maids, they all work hard and are exceptionally friendly. The buffet breakfasts are good, as are the meals served at the poolside snackbar. The location is also excellent--in an interesting neighbourhood. The hotel now has wifi, which is a bonus. All in all, a great place to sue as a base to explore Havana. Whenever I work in Havana (usually twice a year), I stay here.

Room Tip: Snacks and drinks (rum, beer and soft drinks) can be bought at the store 150 yards away.

I highly recommend this hotel. The service staff is so nice and the hotel itself is clean and comfortable. With beautiful views of the Malecon on one side of the building or parts of Havana on the other you can't go wrong. The food is good and the breakfast buffet gives you many options. It is situated nicely in Havana and is a short ride, or, long but manageable walk to Old Havana.

After reading other reviews herein, all we can say is: It's true that:
1) There are 2 elevators, one or both of which may be working on a particular day;
2) When the hotel is fully booked, the hot water may be sporadic on a particular day;
3) The cold water may be running out of the sink faucet or through your bathroom ceiling on a particular day;
4) Rooms on the street side experience a lot of traffic noise during the day but a great view of the city at night;
5) The breakfasts are vast and plentiful and generally good, while other meals are best had outside the hotel (got to paladars only, not government restaurants;
6) The staff is friendly, attentive & accommodating;
7) The building is a great old 1920's? style building;
8) The wrap-around veranda is perfect for conversations over cigar smoking and rum sipping at night;
9) The grand lobby is like a party you only see in old movies, every night.
10) You'll miss a great experience if you don't stay here at least a few nights of your trip.
