“Nice people, clean rooms”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

I highly recommend this hotel. The service staff is so nice and the hotel itself is clean and comfortable. With beautiful views of the Malecon on one side of the building or parts of Havana on the other you can't go wrong. The food is good and the breakfast buffet gives you many options. It is situated nicely in Havana and is a short ride, or, long but manageable walk to Old Havana.

After reading other reviews herein, all we can say is: It's true that:
1) There are 2 elevators, one or both of which may be working on a particular day;
2) When the hotel is fully booked, the hot water may be sporadic on a particular day;
3) The cold water may be running out of the sink faucet or through your bathroom ceiling on a particular day;
4) Rooms on the street side experience a lot of traffic noise during the day but a great view of the city at night;
5) The breakfasts are vast and plentiful and generally good, while other meals are best had outside the hotel (got to paladars only, not government restaurants;
6) The staff is friendly, attentive & accommodating;
7) The building is a great old 1920's? style building;
8) The wrap-around veranda is perfect for conversations over cigar smoking and rum sipping at night;
9) The grand lobby is like a party you only see in old movies, every night.
10) You'll miss a great experience if you don't stay here at least a few nights of your trip.

This hotel is a piece of history. Al Capone and Che Guevara stayed here (the latter without paying). But the paint is peeling, various things don't work, and the hot water is very unreliable. Food is copious, but canteen quality. It's far from the historic old Havana (you need a taxi to get there). But rooms are big, views are nice (from the upper floors, on the seafront side), the pool zone is nice, and staff are OK. I loved the sign saying "children in the lift must have an accompanist!", and another one saying "we apologise - this door has been repainted"!

I had read some scary reviews of this hotel on Trip Advisor but ended up loving the place. Yes, one of the two elevators didn't work but it was no big deal. One's expectations have to be placed within the context of Cuban realities.The size of the hotel is perfect; it would be called a boutique hotel in the US. I did meet George and he lived up to his reputation in these reviews!The lobby has the aura of an old-fashioned grand hotel but on a small scale. Our room faced the Malecon and we got great breezes off the sea. The bathroom was nice and the bed was very comfortable. The six computers worked fine. The veranda of the hotel is a great place for a drink. Best of all was the ensemble playing traditional Cuban son in the evenings. They were fantastic. The location is great for walking to restaurants or along the Malecon.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the sea will have more breezes and a nice view.

The ambience of Verandas and old style architecture plus the attentive staff made our 4 night stay terrific. Cabs are the way to get to Old Havana and museums. Walks are through safe,
always interesting neighborhoods. Bkfst was plentiful but can be a bit crowded.

I have read the other recent reviews...windows/noise etc. Sorry folks this is the spot to stay.This is a GREAT hotel ; full of atmosphere and an attentive staff. We were on the 10th floor and faced a school . Super quiet at night/ great beds! Do not expect Las Vegas/ American standards. This is the real Cuba. Great spot... take a CoCo cab to downtown Havana (5 CUC) enjoy the ambience.I would recommend his hotel highly.We will be back :)

Room Tip: 9th or 10th floor.

Presidente is off the beaten track, which is exactly where you want to be in Havana. Nestled in a residential neighbourhood and a block away from the Malecon, you see many elements of Cuba life from the wrap-around veranda. There is an elementary school across the street providing an interesting window on Cuban families. Located on the corner of a main boulevard, the parade of automobiles is endless. 40s and 50s american cars of all manner of condition belching black smoke from replacement diesel engines (Cuban mechanics must rank amongst the world's most resourceful). The surrounding neighbourhood is an interesting slice of life in present-day Havana. Crumbling mansions fight the elements, outdoor markets sell vegetables and caged birds, a luxury hotel 10 minutes away along the sea wall; walks from this location are always interesting. Keep your eyes on the sidewalk though. Lots of potholes and missing manhole covers are a hazard.
Staff were generally hepful and friendly. The breakfast buffet is plentiful and the wine cheap ($10 Cdn a bottle) and you're only 5-10 minutes away from Parc Centrale by cab($5 Cdn) when you're ready for the tourist experience. If you want to experience the REAL Havana, Presidente is a great base from where to begin your explorations.

Room Tip: Upper floors facing the side street aren't noisy and offer views of the boulevard and the school
