“Hung out in the lobby every night...”
Reviewed January 18, 2013

While I was in Cuba for a week, I actually stayed nearby but hung out in the lobby, bar, and internet cafe every night of the Hotel Presidente.
It is a very nice place. The staff was very friendly to us. The drinks at the bar was very good and reasonably priced. The internet cafe was also reasonably priced but a very very slow connection.
The live Cuban music also added to ambiance of the hotel.

It was a luxury destination in its day but like the city that surrounds it, the revolution has not been kind. But it is not fair to compare it to hotels in other cities that can provide the infra structure and funding to guarantee that all the details are perfect. Accept that it is Havana and the minor issues are relatively unimportant and part of the charm of contemporary Havana. None of the problems were significant in their impact on our week long stay. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The hotel was a 10 minute $5USD cab ride from the center of the city and its major attractions. It is two blocks from the ocean and the Malecon -- (officially Avenida de Maceo) is a broad esplanade, roadway and seawall which stretches for 8 km (4 miles) along from the mouth of Havana Harbor in Old Havana, along the north side of the Centro Habana neighborhood, ending in the Vedado neighborhood. Its a wonderful place to walk at all times of the day and night....

Room Tip: ask for pool side to avoid street noise

It was definitely not our choice to stay here… We traveled to Cuba with a tour group and this was the place they had booked for us. As with most things in Cuba The Hotel Presidente is old, but here it really shows. Our room had a window broken out, a toilet that never stopped running, a tub that constantly dripped, and a door that didn’t close all the way unless it was slammed. The rooms are VERY dark and depressing, with dark navy carpet and heavy curtains. The staff is less that friendly, especially the bar staff. The location is also not ideal; most of the attractions you will want to see are in Old Havanna. So we were required to take a taxi, instead of just being able to walk where we needed to go. The only redeeming quality was the breakfast buffet, but it certainly wasn't enough to make up for any of the hotels short comings. We would not return.

Room Tip: Rooms on the North side of the hotel faced the Malecón. I assume this would have been nicer, but we...

We stayed for three nights. Our room was on the 6th floor and was very comfortable. The water was always hot, the pressure was good and everything worked well. The chambermaid, Tina, did a good job keeping our room clean. The reception staff were friendly and service in the restaurant areas was good. The barserver in the afternoons/evenings was very good. She remembered what we drank and was always smiling and helpful. We did not get her name unfortunately - but she is easily recognized by her beautiful eyes.
Thank you to everyone for making a very rare get-away relaxing and enjoyable( I am an event planner - so most weekends are busy) We will return.

Let's just say that in it's day, Hotel Presidente might have been a great hotel. I stayed here with a group for 7 nights. When you walk into the hotel lobby, it is beautiful, dark, old wood. To your right are three desks with internet access ($6 for an hour). The rooms, well, arriving to our room, we found that when you flushed the toilet, the water sprayed out. We called for maintenance and they arrived immediately and resolved the problem. However, others in my group had A/C and room refrigerators that did not work, had water dripping on their head when they sat on the toilet..eww! Our room could have been cleaner...there was a layer of dust on top of the TV stand, there were dust balls under the bed. Although our housekeeper knew there were two people in our room, she would only leave one clean towel. The sliding mirror closet door came off the track on our second day and I called for maintenance...they never fixed it. The food in the restaurant is okay, nothing special. We had pizza several nights at the pool bar and it was very good. The breakfast buffet is fresh and has something for everyone. George (Clooney...) the bellman was extremely helpful and was great at drawing maps and giving directions. Please seek him out if you stay there, he is a character! Hotel President isn't bad, and isn't a 5 star, but is centrally located and is a good hotel. Take a couple of rolls of toilet paper from home, you'll be glad you did. I would stay here again now that I know what to expect.

Room Tip: If possible, choose rooms above the 6th floor...you will avoid the street level noise.

Was built in the 1920’s and love the history here.
The lobby is beautiful and I guess that’s why it is branded as 4 stars.

Unfortunately when we got to the rooms it seemed to all fall apart. In my room the toilet didn’t work and every day we were there I had tell the reception. It worked on the day we were leaving so not great service here. The fridges in the rooms do not work. Also when we asked about certain places around and about, the reception girls didn’t have a clue which was rather frustrating.

The food was ok but I would say venture out to other eating places.

The saving grace for this hotel is the bar staff and porters. In particular Marelvis and George
Marelvis makes a mean frozen Daiquiri and George is a fountain of knowledge.

We stayed here 7 nights, which is pretty much unheard of when visiting Cuba as most people stay in private homes to save money. The hotel was costly, but it comes with the territory. The lobby of the hotel is gorgeous and the 24 hour bar and constant live music makes for a great time. The breakfast buffet was actually far beyond what I expected and I was thrilled at the amount of food and options. The rooms are big but a bit old and broken, but it adds to the character of the city. The beds are uncomfortable but again, good luck finding better. The staff was mostly friendly but at times you could tell they just didn't care as much. Again, take a moment to realize where you are before complaining about the service or lack there of. Major Advice...DO NOT USE THE PHONES in the room. The costs are insane, especially when making international calls. We were charged an extra $23 for a call we never made and there was no way of getting the charges reversed. Overall, it's a great hotel with a good location...being outside of Old Havana. It's smaller than the Nacional Hotel, which is all the rave, but I feel they are comparable.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms at the top levels as the street noises are a bit much in the morning...facing the beac...
