I stayed at the hotel for 5 days. As I have read in prior reviews, indeed this hotel needs some major renovations. We stayed on the 14th floor (corner room with balcony) and the ocean view was spectacular. The room was very musty. This is not a hotel for allergy sufferers or asthmatics. We realized this the first night and slept with all of the windows open after that. Air conditioning barely worked but it did not matter to us since we opted for fresh air. There was no hot water must of the time and the toilet didn't work properly. Every time we showered, the bathroom flooded, making it very slippery. We had a fridge in the room and it worked very nicely. We also had a old TV with cable and it worked most of the time too. But that didn't matter to us because we didn't go to Cuba to watch TV! There is no Internet available. One night, the elevators were out of power and from what I heard, this happens quite often. Eventually, we ended up walking up the 14th floors. No apologies were given to us. The front desk people were serious and at times, somewhat friendly. The lobby is clean with security around. We had a breakfast buffet every morning and the food was nothing to brag about. It was plentiful and the service was good. By the way, non-smoking rooms are not available. You should know, there is a small shopping mall on front (with a small supermarket) and there is also a Melia hotel next to it. Overall, we would give this hotel 2-3 stars. Not worth the price they charge for the rooms. Do not have high expectations, and try to stay positive. After all, this is a state-run hotel. Lastly, remember to tip nicely at all times... your stay will improve!

Room Tip: Ask for higher floors.

My stay at this hotel turned out to be what felt like the longest 2 days of my life.
Please, for your own safety, stay away!
-At check in I was told they have internet, later when I went to use it I was told they are "out of wifi cards and will not have any coming in"
-Dirty rusty shower and some sort of wood eating bugs destroying the closet and leaving a mess for us to sweep up twice a day.
-Rooms and hallways smell musty as hell
-WE HAD SOMEONE TRY TO GET INTO OUR ROOM AT 3AM BOTH NIGHTS. I HAD TO HOLD THE DOOR SHUT AND YELL TO GET THE GUY TO RUN OFF!! He had a card for the door, I was lucky that the dead bolt does not open with the card! I thought it was a freak thing but then he came back the second night at the same time and was pounding on the door and trying to kick it open. Very scary and the front desk phone line was off the hook from 3am till he left? Maybe they are working together? When I told the front desk staff they rolled their eyes and said they would "note it"
-Breakfast area was from the Soviet era, dimly lit and food a dog would turn away.
For a few more bucks a night stay at the Melia across the street, its top notch.

Myself any girlfriend made the mistake of staying at this property for two nights in October 2013. Foolishly, we only read the reviews after having stayed there, and pretty much every review I have read is 100% correct. We couldn't have got a worse first impression; to say the front desk staff are rude is a massive understatement. Very unhelpful, extremely uninterested and generally not what one would expect of a supposed 4* property. The rooms smelt extremely musty, and the bed felt like it was part of the original fit out in the 50's. And the worst part - it's not even cheap! I would seriously reconsider staying here. The only good thing is the view.... But its certainly not a $200USD a night view.

Really not up to its 4 star rating. They're slowly refurbishing rooms in the hotel, but the room we stayed in had very old and dirty carpet, lumpy pillows, sheets didn't fit so they're not tucked in - very quickly all a mess in the bed; seats broken.

First room we were put in, a/c wasn't working. We complained and were finally given a new room, which was better, but still not great. Then the hot water didn't work for the first 24 hours - apparently a problem for the whole building.

Staff mostly not interested in helping, or if they do help, they provide the wrong information (eg. advice about withdrawing cash).

Cocktails and food at pool bar were very poor quality - can't even make a mojito properly!
Breakfast was terrible - scrambled eggs were cold and tasted like they had vinegar in them.

Only three good things:
1. was the very friendly and helpful cleaning/chambermaid staff (Olguita and her supervisor), who were both outstanding and very helpful.
2. the restaurant staff were very friendly, food was good and appropriately priced
3. the lady in the cigar shop was friendly and helpful

By far the worst 4 star hotel we have ever stayed in - we've stayed in 2 star hotels in 3rd world countries which were better than this.

I've stayed at the Riviera twice: April/May and late November of 2012. It is kind of nasty. The cool looking furniture is all sagged out; if you sit in a chair in your hotel room, you might not be able to get back up. Things smell a little funky, the carpets look like hell and all the linens should be thrown out and replaced. The ground floor is still fabulous and I think they work hard to keep it that way. I've never been unhappy with the service at the two bars, or the restaurant or cafe in the lobby, and the views are grand, not only from the lobby but from just about every window in the hotel. When I first visited, the fountains outside the entrance were dry; seemed like typical Havana infrastructure. It was a nice surprise to see them flowing on my next visit. Creepier surprises abound however. There's a big glassed-in room on the ground floor, between the main lobby and the cafe; but there's no sign inside the lobby that this room exists. It's been walled off. When you're outdoors you can see the doors to this mystery room are padlocked. Stranger than this is that, on my second stay at the Riviera, I realized that the entire wing of the building where my previous room was located had been walled off as if it had never been there! The building has three wings; as of last November, the southeast wing was invisible from the interior. Also, when standing out on the Malecon at night and looking at the hotel, you can see there are no lights on in any room from at least the 4th to the 12th floors. This place really deserves a ground-up restoration. I only hope it stays standing until some foreign investor comes to the rescue. On the bright side, the Melia Cohiba, a very nice hotel in its own right, seems like a palace compared to its next-door neighbor, the Riviera. Stay at the Cohiba but don't miss the awesome lobby at the Riviera.

Room Tip: Take whatever they have, they're boarding off more rooms every year.

Our room had a great view of the ocean, and that was a memorable plus. But all the other memories will be bad: the filthy tableclothes, lousy breakfast, cockroaches on the furniture by the elevator, hair on the carpet and the sheets, indifferent to rude front desk staff......Plus the incredibly loud parties at the pool nightly from Wednesday through Sunday. By which I mean, on the 19th floor, not facing the pool, with the windows closed and the AC running, still unable to sleep because of the throbbing amplified base. And of course the next morning the pool was littered with beer cans and cigarette butts. Will never stay here again.

Room Tip: Go to a different hotel if you want to choose a good room
