“Nice Cuban hotel”
Reviewed June 1, 2013

Nice hotel, clean, the restaurants are not the best, the buffet is above the average of the cuban buffets; the rooms are different; bungalows and rooms in the hotel; the bungalows have a little kitchen and a hall; has a kind of entrance for the sea/kind of pool that nobody use; the pools are ok and the snack bar are in the middle of the pools; it in the "miramar" side, outside the la habana city; not to far but u going to need a taxi to get to la Habana and its like 10CUC.
The rooms are comfortable but the people does not always clean very well; sometime u can find some bugs and cockroaches around.

My stay was for visiting friends in Havana . I have been to this hotel before but just for the day. The location was at the end of the tour bus line so every 30 minutes I could pay 5 dollars and ride all day. Two 5 star hotels down was a bank machine for money. This hotel had internet however it was not all ways working I walked next door for a hotel that was 5 star ,great dinning, stores ,internet and telephones international.
What I have likes about Hotel El Comodoro is their brake water and small beach ,if you are a day visitor you can but lunch and drink and use their beach. Nice Bungalows ,swimming pools one is a swim up bar ,cabaret and bar has piano music out side has a Cuban band entertainment . Please remember to tip they are payed so little and appreciates a dollar tip..
Enjoy Havana Cuba.

Supposed upgrade to a bungalow/villa extremely disappointing, quite grubby. Intrigued by the 2 burner hotplate in "kitchenette" when the only thing in the cupboards was 1 drinking glass. No kettle, saucepan, plates etc.
Loads of gnats flying around and some large bugs crawling about. Couldn't wait to get out of there.
Reception and Restaurant were ok, but generally run-down and uninviting. Staff quite curt.
Stayed at the beginning and end of our holiday in Guardalavaca. Never again.
Fairly on the outskirts of the city.

The hotel is very well located, few stores, markets, and a very good view of the sea of north Havana litoral,I visited with my wife several times during the recents years, is a option to see and enjoy how tourist visitors and really cubans people living togheter, staff most of times are very professional.I personally found this hotel like good options to relax and actualize my vision of the real Havana city life.

What we disliked:
- airconditioning did not work in first room
- ants in the room and in the bed
- moulded bathroom ceilings and bathroom windows
- dirty towels
- power sockets falling out of the walls
- power sockets installed IN the shower???
- water flowing out of the ceiling in our second room
- lizzards and ants in our third room
- food in the buffet restaurant was cold and below any standard
- gaps and cracks in the windows, you can put a finger into the gaps (no wonder insects walk in and out!)
- the entire hotel gave the impression of falling apart

What we liked:
- front desk staff was willing to help us, it wasn't their fault they did not have any possibility to do so
- breakfast was not good though acceptable
- bell boy did everything he could to make the airconditioning work
- staff was honoust (when checking out 2 days early, they automatically refunded the rent of the safe for the next two days)

We were supposed to spend the first three nights of our 7 night fly and drive through Cuba at Hotel Comodoro. As all other hotels on our trip were 2 and 3 star hotels (hotel Comodoro is rated 4 stars!) owned and managed by Cubanacan, we decided after one night at Hotel Comodoro to look for another solution.

Unfortunately all 5* hotels in Havana were fully booked, so we paid 1.200 USD for 6 nights and moved to Meliá Varadero on the second day.

I admit that we are spoiled European tourists, and that luxury is quite important to us. Nevertheless, a simple hotel is sufficient when travelling through a country, it may be old and unfancy but at least has to be clean.

If you don't care about cleanliness or any of the items listed above, Hotel Comodoro might be a great choice for you.

I also admit that I have no idea of the price they charge per night, though I hope it's no too much.

If you do care about any of this, just one advice: go to Melia Habana, Melia Cohiba, Iberostar Parque Central or any other of the many good quality hotels in beautiful Havana.

My fiancé and I stayed here for one night at the end of our trip and were happy with our choice! It's and older hotel but can't really fault it for the price. We had lunch in the Italian restaurant in the hotel and the food was really good and very well priced! The only downside is that it is about 10 minutes out of town, but other then that great spot to relax around the pool.

Just got back from one week at Comodoro, family with two kids 10 and 13. For sure this place is dilapidated, but this is not unusual for Cuba, and in fact, they did their best with what they had. We had a few inconveniences but nothing that ruined our stay. (e.g., the hotel ran out of water for a couple hours, water is delivered by truck; minifridge didn't work but was replaced). We checked in very late at night and they put us in a 2 bed bungalow. Luckily, the snack bar/pool bar is open 24 hours so if you need something you can get it anytime. We asked to change rooms in the am because ours was noisy and dark, at the back nr the road. They did so no problem, much better room, this time with 3 bedrooms instead of two! Rooms are basic but bedding was good. TV and Safe in room worked well. Tip daily not at end of your stay, but leave a Gracias note or the maid will leave the money where it is! Hotel has many pools (7 I think?) but only about half were open. This was totally fine, although it would have been prettier with all pools filled. Pool area very pleasant and not busy at all. Lots of spanish-speaking guests. Portions of the hotel were closed. The section right up against the water is literally falling into the sea. They are working on it but cannot keep up with the constant decay. We had breakfast included. The buffet was 'interesting' but there was always something good to eat. We brought oatmeal packets and peanut butter for the kids, which was a good idea. Service was lackluster, but just be assertive and ask for what you need. Ate dinner 3 times at the Italian and always good, lovely servers there. Live music most nights, always talented and entertaining musicians. We also ate lunch at the pool bar. Great grilled chicken and other snacks, very cheap! You can take the Habana Bus Tour into the city for $5 each but for four of us, then $10 taxi ride was a better deal and more convenient/quick. Taxis vary greatly in age and safety features.
Comodoro is on the water but there is a breakwater, not a beach. You can swim there if it is calm no problem, but with shoes. Lots of coral and urchins. Pretty fish to see. We did a day pass at the Atlantico hotel in Playa del Este, about 40 minutes away. We enjoyed the beach a lot, but the hotel seemed more run down and basic than the Comodoro. Glad we chose the hotel we did!
Tips: Mercado is just next door to stock up on beer/wine/rum/snacks. You will not cook in your room; only the fridge is of any use. Also a variety of shops for anything you forgot to bring. Ate one night at Melia Habana next door and pizza was fantastic. Also ate at Amelia a short walk away, very cheap, fancy ambiance, really good lunch. You can change money at the hotel but the rate is better at a CADECA in town.
Habana is amazing!!! Go soon as it is changing quickly already!
PS Next time we would likely book a higher-end hotel in Centro or Viejo (one with a pool for the kids) but this costs much more than the package deal we got with Sunwing.

Room Tip: Bungalow not adjacent to road. We were on ground level; upper ones looked like they would be brighte...
