Owner description: A famed Cuban beach ideal for lying out in the sun.
Reviewed April 8, 2013

We stayed at the Atlantico Hotel so we were lucky enough to enjoy this beautiful beach every day for two weeks.
It is very safe with Security everywhere to keep an eye on things. The Cuban families were very friendly and on occasions had invited us to join them while walking along the stretch from the Atlantico to the town of Guanabo.

The beach is one of the most beautiful we have seen and great for swimming or body surfing when the surf is up which happens most afternoons when it gets a bit windy. This beach is much nicer with the local Cuban families enjoying the beach than the ones in Varadero with all the foreign tourists.
On weekends there is lively Cuban activity with people dancing on the beach to Salsa music and it was so much fun to be part of it.

We loved the whole atmosphere on the beach! It was fantastic and can't wait to go back!
When walking to Guanabo there is a bit of a river that you might have to walk through on occasion unless the tide is very low then it is dry. The bridge is under construction but did not see much activity in replacing it. Also further down the beach there is a building in ruins which blocks the beach but you just have to go around it for a bit. Not much of a problem.
This beach is not very crowded at all except for the beach in front of the Tropicocco Hotel which we kept away from.
We recommend this beach highlyand is well worth it even if having to come by bus for anyone not lucky enough to stay at the Atlantico.

Such beautiful ocean, but looking at the buildings and upkeep on land can be depressing. Cuba is so beautiful and yet...

We stayed at the Hotel Atlantico and, if nothing else, the beach was one of the highlights of our vacation! The sand is beautiful, silky and slips right through your fingers. There are four different shades of turquoise to the water and the walks any time of day are just fabulous!

Just recently spent the afternoon at Santa Maria beach while staying in Havana. Beautiful sand (keep watch for sand fleas) and warm ocean waves in which to play. Don't bother bringing your snorkelling equipment as it is not suitable - sandy bottom. Purchase a chair and or umbrella for 2 CUC each from the young men who will see you arriving! They'll also bring you drinks and food from a little restaurant. Enjoy a coco loco - whole coconut with the top cut off and rum added to the coconut milk inside. Bring a spoon with you so you can scrape out the young coconut flesh! Delicious. Price was 3 CUC. A wonderful group of musicians came along, entertaining us with Cuban music. Be sure to tip these folks a few pesos. They are ever so grateful for the support. Wonderful way to take a break from the city and enjoy sun and surf. We took a tour bus to the beach as we were a group of 21 but the Habana Bus Tour Hop On Hop Off bus will get you there and back for 5 CUC. Take the Line 3 bus to get there.
