“Evening show”
Reviewed August 14, 2013

If you really wanna to see this place in special atmosphere then take a evening tour with dinner, when you can see the canon shot.

“Best in Havana - El Canonazo de las 9pm”
Reviewed August 3, 2013

My disappointment for arriving too early was totally forgotten by the beautiful sunset but especially by the very professional shotgun ceremony at 9pm. Actors characterized as 18th (?) century guards spent circa of ½ hour in an interesting ceremony culminating on an incredible and loud Cannon shot.
We arrived few minutes after 6pm (entrance fee 9 CUC after 6pm, 6 CUC before), looking for having drinks and an early dinner in “bares, shops and restaurants inside the fort” as described in the our travel guide. In fact, we were practically the only tourists there and there was no activity at all. At that time, a small street market was being mounted. Nevertheless we managed to enter in one of the 3 existent restaurants, empty of course, and had a very decent meal (good, isn’t it ?).
But, after all, we glad we came. It was the best we saw in Havana.

“Very powerful at night!”
Reviewed July 23, 2013

While walking along the Malecon during the day, this fortress is very impressive and quite beautiful to admire. Every night a cannon shot rumbles at 9pm as the so-called "El Cañonazo de las 9", a custom kept from colonial times, signaling the closure of the city wall doors. Don't miss it! It's a powerful show to watch within the fortress!

“It's probably better in the evening”
Reviewed May 11, 2013

Took the ferry Casablanca & walked to the statue of Jesus, then round to the fort. It's 6CUC to get in during the day, 9 at night, but other than nice views of the harbour (which you can see from the statue for free) there isn't much to see. All the museums were closed. So I would say skip it during the day & go at night.
