Absolutely LOVE Old Havana! Its like a walk back in time!
We went on an excursion from cayo santa maria by plane and when the day was over I did not want to leave!! I will definitely stay in Havana next time I return to Cuba!
Walking down the cobble streets admiring all the amazing different historic buildings, it is merely breathtaking!!!!!

The best place in the world. Go there and eat in the Paladares. Really good and cheap. Take a coco car, you will enjoy for sure. Best city in the world

Visiting Havana is like making your own time travel to the past, let’s say the 1950’s, the buildings, the cars, the people and the whole surroundings make you feel like in a different time, not only a different country
You will see a lot of places that could look unsafe, but is just that, the “look”, honestly, as I walked all around at all times, day, night, and never happened anything, besides, there’s police officers every 2 blocks or so, if you should need them…which I’m sure you won’t. There are folks from all around the world on every street, so you can feel safe going out…no problems at all
Getting around in Old Havana is pretty simple, get a map from your hotel and go to each of the 5 main plazas you have, each and every one of them have a touch of romance, culture and everything you’re looking for, from nice restaurants, hidden gems, to books, souvenirs, piña coladas….everything there’s to see, you’ll find in those 5 points (all maps have them well marked, and you don’t need to book a tour to do it, it’s free! Just read a bit about those Plazas and you’ll be more than fine (I enjoy reading about my destinations months in advance, ha ha)
Don’t let the street vendors and such bother you, just in a polite way say “No, gracias” and you’ll be fine….by conversations I had with many tourists, this could be a turn down for some, but just let it go and enjoy (same with the “mulatas” offering you a picture with them)
I guess, in my head, the most beautiful building I’ve seen there is their Old Cathedral….is really a gem, the inside as well, simple, not over decorated….really nice (one note for everybody: to get in, you can wear Bermudas, no problem, but no shorts are allowed….some people could not get in because of that while I was visiting….taking photos inside, no problem)
Some of the buildings are not in good shape, but the great thing is that, UNESCO is helping put them back to their glory, and you can see already works being done, very good indeed, so that means you can come back in a couple of years to see the end result :o)
I’d say at least 2 nights are mandatory to get a glance of this “back in time” Havana, you won’t regret it

We took a walking tour of Old Havana, visiting all five of the main plazas. Almost all of the buildings that border the plazas are completely restored. Many are now restaurants. Because the bones of the buildings are so beautiful, the results of restoration are marvelous. The government is plowing foreign exchange from tourism back into preservation - to make Havana even more attractive than it already is for tourists. While they have a long way to go before it is restored to what it was in its glory days, their strategy is impressive.

It is a charming place to just wander around - the buildings, some crumbling, some well restored are amazing. Also the 50's american cars - some patched together by filler, some restored brilliantly with gleaming chrome.
