Some beautiful buildings in great condition and some were falling down, but a lot were being restored.

This is a must see if ever in Havana! The beautiful architecture, the old cars, the costumed performers, the markets ... definitely time well spent, and deserving of a return visit!

It is hard to describe the impact of one's first visions of Havana. Most of the once-impressive, Spanish-style mansions, homes and other buildings have deteriorated either a little or a lot. But it is easy to see how this city would have been a grand place "back in the day"!! And maybe how it might yet again be grand!!! It is also interesting to see the tenacity of the Cuban people to survive, and in some cases to thrive, in this place.

There are many points of history to take in and many places within a reasonable walking distance of the old part of the city. If you're staying for a few days, take the Hop on-Hop off bus on day one to get a feel for the place, then go back and visit the places that really stand out to you.

Must-do things include the Malecon at night, the Gran Theatro (if you can get in), the patio at the Nacional, Obispa Calle during the day, stroll the del Prado on a Sunday when the artists are in attendance and visit several of the corner bars/restaurants where Cuban musicians play all day.

And don't be put off by the large number of people offering taxi rides, cheap cigars (don't buy them on the street) or just plain begging...they're all just trying to make ends meet in a very difficult economy!!!

And keep lots of coins and small denomination $CUCs in your pockets for tipping!!!
