If you come to Havana, you have to stay here just for the history and the mojitos! Of course, because they are trying to maintain the historic features, the rooms are not as plush as some other top Havana hotels, but to stay in the same hotel as so many famous people is magic. Also, the hotel tour is a must-see. We had allowed an hour for it, but there is so much history that after an hour and a half, we had to curtail it. The guide is an ex-history professor who was a volunteer reservist during the Cuban missile crisis and part of the tour is through the bunkers in the hotel grounds where she served at the time. Also, having spent some of our time there complaining about the single lift for such a large hotel, on the tour we discovered a whole bank of lifts that we had somehow missed! So do the tour at the start of your tour, not the end.
The only drawback is the distance from the main centre of the town, but that's an excuse for a ride in a 1950's convertible!
