This must have once been a very grad hotel and is still beautiful, but it has many short-comings. The room was pleasant and large enough. The bathroom on the other hand could use an upgrade, okay but...Breakfast left a bit to be desired, major problem was stale bread.

We spent the last couple of nights of our three week trip here and were very pleased to be given a suite on the 8th floor. After three weeks of intermittent hot water, cold showers, leaky toilets and thin, child-size towels we were thrilled to be able to take a hot bath (having two bathrooms helped a lot!) and wrap ourselves in thick towels on a big, comfortable bed. The chambermaids were nice and our rooms were spotlessly clean (a couple of robes would have been a nice addition, rather than just a single pair of slippers!).

There's an air of faded glamour about the whole place, and though it comes up to scratch on certain things - the outdoor bar is a lovely space and its staff were friendly and cheerful - the cracks are showing in others, such as the pervasive damp smell in the ground floor common areas, the tired-looking shops, and the quality of the breakfast buffet (though, looking around at my fellow travellers slopping about the breakfast room in singlets and flip-flops, it all felt about as far away from the days of Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra as you could be, so maybe we get what we deserve...). As we were leaving there was a mix-up with our mini-bar bill which soured things a little, as we'd tried too sort it out when checking out and had been told there was 'no problem'...being dragged back to pay what we knew we owed felt embarrassing.

It was the only place in Cuba we'd stayed at where we saw prostitutes being brought into a hotel and a definite 'blind eye' being turned...as I thought Cuba was very keen to distance itself from its former image of the 'Thailand of the Caribbean', it was a bit of a surprise to see this going on at what is supposed to be its most prestigious hotel. Anyway, I was very glad to have a couple of nights there, and loved the location - do take some time to wander round the locality and see the crumbing colonial mansions of Vedado - some of the most wonderful architecture in all Havana is just minutes from the Nacional. And if you're staying on a Saturday night, the vibrant life of the Malecon is just across the road - don't miss it.

The National is marketed as a 5 star hotel, but it does not compare to 5 star hotels elsewhere in the world, so that is something to bear in mind when choosing to stay there. Yes, it is historical and many celebrities have stayed there in the past, but in my opinion this alone does not justify the high star rating.
The good things: history of the establishment, architecture, nice location overlooking the seafront. The pool is pleasant (but can get busy) and good entertainment.
No so good: attitude of staff (english level very low in some), very late check in (at 4pm!), maintenance level in rooms not of good quality and some cleanliness issues. Breakfast was a difficult experience.
Finally as a tourist, you generally pay more in Cuba and you pay even more when you reside in the National. For example, if you take a taxi to the airport from the hotel entrance it will cost you 25 CUC, whereas if you walk two minutes to the taxi rank at the front garden entrance it will be 20 CUC.
One thing to watch is check out. They tried to charge for mini bar items we never had (we did not use the mini bar). A family who was checking out at the same time as us, had exactly the same experience.
It was an experience, but not one we would be repeating I don't think.

What an enigma! This beautiful structure sits majestically overlooking the water and should be one amazing place. And it used to be. The lobby is magnificent. But the guest rooms are dim and smelly with mold on the drapes. we had to turn off the a/c just to breathe in there. The ved was like sleeping on a plywood board. Staff were friendly, but there are odd unexplained rules, like needing a card after checkout to leave the building.

Our guide insists this is the best of the best in Havana. It would be amazing to see this place if a capital infusion replaced the 50+ years of neglect. I feel for the ownership and want to love this place, but there are too many failings that, with profit-motive ownership, would be easily overcome.

It is worth a visit, a tour, a drink outside overlooking the water, a visit to a club to hear fantastic live music. But staying requires a lot of compromises.

Room Tip: Visit the room and run if the windows are screwed shut and it smells musty

I've just returned from my third stay in as many years at the Nacional. As always the stay was frustrating and wonderful. I usually stay on the 6th floor - a so-called executive floor. I had a very small room over-looking the front of the hotel. There was a strong smell of mould, the window did not open and the bed was lumpy. (Last time I was there I had a suite on the 6th floor - that was wonderful!). It has never been clear to me what is better about the executive floor except that you get to check in there and that there is a separate business centre. So what was the wonderful part? The building is wonderful, the veranda is wonderful, and the gardens and pool are wonderful. Also it is the perfect location. So next year I'll be back again for the same frustrating and wonderful experience.
