Hotel Nacional de Cuba
Ranked #6 of 80 Hotels in Havana

This is my first time to Cuba and i love stay in one of historical hotels in Cuba. It is near to the most important attractions in havana, 10min to old havana by taxi. It is as luxury as you can get in all Havana´s resorts. A beautiful lobby is next to the entrance full of warm wood. A nice hotel with all the amenities you need. The regular rooms are rather small but very comfortable with adequate bathrooms. Breakfast was good in the buffet, and for dinner we go out for restaurant, there are a thousand around the hotel.

I am sure the hotel itself used to be an excellent location in the past. However, I was left with the impression that I have paid more like a museum entrance (expensive one) rather than a hotel apartment.
We stayed one night in apartment 211-213, in mid November 2013. Great room, but a dead bug welcomed us right at the entrance.
Showers and bath tub are quite posh but unfortunately they did not work properly. Although there are caution signs warning you about 50 degrees hot water, our water was not even close to 50...
In front of the living there was a huge terrace and I am sure the view was spectacular, but unfortunately the door was blocked with a screw...

Internet is quite expensive and you would expect some quality for 10USD/12h, but I did not even manage to download my emails...

Breakfast was OK, with a wide range of cheese, pastries and fruits. Don`t try the natural juice tough...it comes out of plastic bags and it looks anything BUT natural; just stick to the fruits.

The pool service was per pay. For almost 400 USD/night I would have expected at least a free pool.

History wise, the location is fabulous - countless characters have visited this place, from state presidents to singers, actors, mafia heads, etc.
I particularly liked the room history placed at the entrance of each room, which showed what famous character was a guest there.

Interesting place in the back yard - you can visit some tranches, galleries and a bunker used during the Cuban missile crisis. There a really nice old man acting as a guide there, he has some interesting stories to tell (if you speak Spanish).

All in all, it`s a really nice historical experience, but the hotel should not be rated as 5 stars...maybe 3.

Room Tip: We has an apartment at the second floor - this is the mafia floor - if you`re into this kind of thin...

I was fortunate to be booked into one of the rooms of famous actor. I loved the grounds and enjoyed several nights under the stars with friends and good Cuban rum.
My main problem was that the lights worked only part of the time. The bathroom light was the only consistent one. Front desk was unresponsive to my issue.
The lobby does not encourage groups to sit and visit but there is an expansive outdoor area facing the sea. It does get a little crowded in the evenings given the size of the hotel.
Breakfast buffet was nothing to be excited about. If you were later in the morning, many items were gone. I skipped breakfast my last day there.
Loved the location for the ability to walk to some superb restaurants.

Although full of history since it was built in 1930--with a lot of memorabilia of military, mafia, and movie stars--the Nacional is dowdy and musty. The rooms are small and the plumbing has not been updated from the '50s. As a government-run enterprise, the staff illustrate the often-heard expression of Cuban workers, "the government pretends to pay us and we pretend to work!" Customer service does not seem to be a priority. The Nacional is in a beautiful location with a great view of the Malecon and the sea beyond. Of interest on the grounds are the bunkers and small museum about the Misslle Crisis of 1962.

We stayed for 3 nights at the beginning of our Holiday and I night at the end, the first room we had was the Nat King Cole room and the last night was just a normal room on the 6th floor. The Nat king Cole room was more spacious and all though the last room was comfortable, it was a lot smaller and did smell a little damp, the windows didn't seem to be double glazed and if it was windy day, you could hear the wind blowing. The hotel is a faded beauty, but we thought the grounds and lobby, were well maintained. We enjoyed sitting outside watching the waves break over the sea wall with a great cocktail in hand, we were also glad that we didn't stay in the old Havana, it was more peaceful and easy enough to walk in or a cab ride to the old Town from The Nacional de Cuba. The only thing we found slightly annoying when walking was the constant request to hire a cab or horse. Do keep lots of small currency with you because it seems everyone expects a tip. Some of the staff were a bit off, but lots were lovely and the guys that served in the Churchill Bar couldn't have been nicer. Havana was a mix of the wonderful and the awful, there were beggars that could be a nuisance and made you feel uneasy, but the music in the bar and just on street corners was fantastic, lots of Havana is being restored, but they have a long way to go. But we did enjoy this fascinating City

It was a long dream to stay in this hotel full of history, created in 1933, where the history of the hotel and Cuba is mixed.
In this hotel,in 1946,Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky made the most famous meeting of the mafia history, where Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner spent their honeymoon!!
The hotel is not cheap and has normal standards,to Cuba....
But the outside area, the fantastic view of the Bay, the sunset drinking excellent mojitos it deserves the price for sure!!!
The staff is really friendly!!
We will return...

The hotel entrance is off a small street which hides the fantastic entrance where we were greeted with a smile and a helpful door man. The lobby is to die for full of warm wood and more smiles. The room was clean tidy and comfortable and after unpacking a good nights sleep was in order as we arrived late. However there was plenty still going on with music playing in the gardens.
The gardens next morning where fantastic and always kept in good order, clean tidy and well looked after.
Staff very friendly in all areas of the hotel, including the bars, cigar shop and the reception.
One negative was the food in the terrace restaurant, the hot food stuff could be a hot however the range was generally good.
The bars are fantastic with the best mojitos to be found in the bar in the middle of the gardens.
We stayed three nights and all three were comfortable. The bathroom was adequate and although the rooms need a splash of paint here and there it added to the charm and history of the hotel.
A must for cigar lovers and for salsa lovers try to see the buena vista social club if they play.

Dear guest:
We are really pleased to know that you had a comfortable stay in the hotel during three days. Definitely we will convey your appreciation to all the staff.
Thank you for sharing your constructive opinion with the Tripadvisor community. They can find in your review good tips about the services of the Hotel such as the traditional Cuban music concerts that we offer every Thursday and Saturday with an exclusive and well known dance couple. Also the Bar Rosa Nautica with a beautiful view to the sea is an attractive suggestion.
We would like to add that every visitor can enjoy a free historical tour around the Hotel with the explanation of our specialists, every day except Sundays.
Hopefully you will be able to enjoy of our hospitality again in your next trip to Cuba.
