A beautiful historical hotel with all the necessary amenities. You will not find luxury in Havana but the Nacional de Cuba is as close as you can get! Wonderful grounds with lovely views. It is close to the town centre. We stayed in a suite which is recommended as the regular rooms are rather small!

Stayed: February 2013, traveled as a couple

This is a great historic old hotel from the glory days of Havana
It is a great place to go and enjoy a mojoto on the terrace but would not recommend staying here
It was way overpriced. Rooms were not that good, service was marginal. I would stay somewhere else.

Dear guest
It is really good to know that you consider great the historical ambience of the hotel.
Thank you for your tip to the rest of the Tripadvisor community about the great feeling of enjoying a mojito in the Galeria Bar.
Regrettably as your overall valuation was unfavorable, it would have been very helpful some specific and real experiences in order to improve.
Hopefully you will decide to stay again in the Hotel Nacional during your next visit to Cuba.

My 6th time to Havana and 2nd time at the Nacional this time with a party of 10 and it just gets better, This hotel has an ambience like no other hotel in Havana and exudes history and style of a bygone age.You can sit in the terrace bar overlooking the Malecon and imagine Frank Sinatra ,Meyer Lansky or even Fidel Castro walking though the lobby. We stayed on the 4th floor of this grand old hotel and the rooms had recently been refurbished to an excellent standard.
A must if staying at this hotel is the history tour conducted by Estella she is brilliant,We have done the tour several times and Estella retains an enthusiasm for the Hotel as if she was conducting the tour for the first time.
Would I stay here again? Most definitely!!!

Room Tip: Ash for a 4th floor room with a view of the Malecon.

This hotel has good and bad points.

I stayed here from 31st October to 3rd November with my boyfriend. The hotel was incredibly historic which we did like. There was a lot to look at and it was nice to know that we were staying somewhere that has so much history.

We arrived quite late so when we had settled into our room we decided to just go for a meal in the hotel. The food was average and fairly expensive. We ate at both restaurants here and the buffet. The buffet food was cold, with little selection. The breakfast was shocking. If you’re staying here, I’d recommend going out to Havana for dinners, something we wished we had done.

Something which was a serious issue for us was the mini bar. When we arrived we were jet lagged and just needed some water. There was no price list for the mini bar. We’re not stupid and suspected it’d be expensive, but took the water anyway. The next day we asked for a price list. All in all, we took 2 bottles of water and a red bull from the fridge. On the way out we were charged for 3 bottles of water, a beer and a whiskey. The woman on reception was telling us there was nothing she could do and didn’t want to take the money off our bill.

We wanted to take a tour of Havana – it’s a must. The tour offered by Virgin Holidays was fairly expensive and was in a minibus. We decided to just ask out front for a tour of Havana. We weren’t disappointed. We had a 1950s Dodge take us around Havana. It was 60CUC for 2 hours. The driver stopped off several times and the tour guide took our photograph. Definitely recommended. The hotel is about 10 minutes’ drive from the old town.

If you are offered a trip to Viñales - it's DEFINITELY worth the money!!

The money exchange was a bit of an issue when we first arrived. You can only change £200 in the lobby and have to go down to the bank for the rest.

We always want a safe wherever we stay, which I thought was very reasonable at 2CUC a night.

Our room was dated (although this was expected) and it was noisy outside at night (although also expected when staying in a city!).

This hotel has good and bad points, but if you’re only staying in Havana for a couple of nights it’s not bad.

A stay here is a must when in Havana to experience and understand the hotel's history atmosphere and its architecture. Great location on the Malecon with an outdoor bar that allows you to observe the romancing and other activities it is known for.

However don't expect too much from the rooms - my itinerary said I would have a room with a garden or sea view - got a view of offices - the consolation was the small 5th floor room where Tennessee Williams stayed which was adequate but at times noisy due to floor staff area being close. Two calls for toilet paper was needed.

Enjoyed the Sunday night outdoor free musical show and the historical tour - the guide's English was at times difficult to decipher but was adequate. The tunnels were a surprise. Lobby is very impressive architecturally but very busy with many non-guests visiting to look at the hotel.

Desk staff did their job with few smiles and little interaction. Bar waiters friendly and efficient and cost of drinks was similar to other places.

The large buffet room for 1 dinner and breakfasts was terrible. Being solo it is hard to find and then keep a table while going to select or replenish food. One morning I purposely left my knife and fork crossed on my plate so that it would not be cleared - it was very annoying to come back to nothing on the table. The waiter did offer to get what I needed but not the point. Being such a large outfit I am not comfortable leaving a handbag on the table. The food on both occasions could be vastly improved. Would not recommend eating dinner there - and there is no choice as to where to breakfast.

Hooray for the Indian promotion - the first tasty meal for 2 weeks - with well cooked and interesting Indian food being offered in the beautiful restaurant and at a very reasonable price. Cuba has in the main very plain and overcooked food - the black bean soup and rice is good though.

Nice to stay in the hotel for it's place in the history of Havana.

Room Tip: Check room has a view of garden or sea.

This was our first trip to Havana and we were pleasantly surprised by the Nacional. The rooms are small but clean. Lighting was very dim and we used a flashlight often. We found the service to be good both at reception, bar, and restaurants. The hotel is located on a hill with beautiful views of the water. The grounds are well kept with lush landscaping. There is a pool. The wrap-around covered area connected to the hotel is very comfortable with wicker sofas, chairs, and tables. Do not expect wifi or many of the amenities found in US hotels. The food in Cuba is terrible everywhere. The best meal is breakfast. If the US lifts the embargo, we would love to visit again.

As a starter: we could not get the reserved room as a water problem had made 2 floors (150 rooms) aparently unusable and we were put up in another hotel. So this review covers only some aspects of this hotel.
The setting is nice, the building evokes old "mafia controlled" times. The lobby is very nice, the bar setting beneath the great arches of the outside patio indeed very "luxury tropical". And from tables at the edge of the garden wall to the Malecón, the view and sound of the Ocean is quite nice.
HOWEVER:
You would expect the Mojitos to be top-class, but they aren't: lemonconcentrate and not real lemon, actually the worst I had during my stay in Cuba.
The hotel gave us a free dinner, as the wait for the replacement room had been tedious and the receptionists simply could not offer good information (but that is perhaps also due to the quite slow telecommunication/internet system).
The outside restaurant, while in theory a nice setting, had its disappointments, too: a very sloppy and unfriendly waiter at the beginning, a nice one towards the end of the meal. The meal (fish) was absolutely unexciting, in particular considering that this is supposedly among the top 4 hotels of the country, but the black beans were a highlight.
Worst of all though: the toilets next to the restaurant were quite filthy and the ladies WC had no toilet paper. While it was quite late in the evening and around the time the restaurant was closing, sanitary areas at a supposedly top class hotel should be looked after a bit better.

The nacional also hosts the "Parisienne" night-clup show, a true and good - and less costly - alternative to the Tropicana, and includes a salsa class after the show. But if you go, i recommend to book the show only and not the dinner. While dinner tables are closer to the stage, the theter is small enough for everyone to get a good view of the show, and the dinner is not really "worth writing home about". Under full lights you would notice that a face lift is urgendly needed, carpets are worn and stained - but then again, many things, including building and decoration material seems difficult to get in Cuba, and what people come for is the show, not the carpet..
