This is a very hard hotel to rate as although the rooms aren't really up to scratch, especially not for a 4/5 star hotel the grounds and buidling are beautiful. The buidling is incredibly impressive and has a good spot on a small hill in front of the Malecon/Sea. There are two large pools, one more for serious length swimming and another for lounging which is very big and has bar service. The problem lies within the rooms, which although fine, are slightly lacking in modern touches. You had to pay for the coffee, the toilets hardly ever flushed properly and the shower was more like a big drip. I found the staff friendly but not excessivly which you would expect from a hotel with this rating. We had breakfast included in our stay and I found the breakfast buffet to be very good. One problem we had while we were there was that they closed the main pool to paint it, we did still have use of the 2nd smaller pool and they set up a bar service there but really I thought they might give you notice/let you know when you book if you aren't going to have use of the main pool as for us that was a big reason to stay there over another hotel. The other issue is the amount of strange behaviour going on around the pool. There were clearly some kind pf prostitutes here, some really alarmingly young girls with older men, young men with older ladies and some men with seemingly 3 women at once. It wasn't a huge issue for us and made some amusing people watching but really it was a bit much at times with some couples lined up in the pool with what I would certainly regard as heavy petting. It seems to be a destination for picking up! The gardens out the back of the hotel are beautiful with peacocks wandering around, a lovely view of the sea and great seats to relax in at any time of day. The Caipirinha here was fantastic, the mojitos were more pre prepared so not the best we had but fine. You can get a classic retro car to take you on a tour from out the front of this hotel or a normal taxi, we never had to wait for either. All in all I loved the hotel for it's history and grounds and think it could be something really special if a few changes were made.

      Dear Guest.
Thanks for letting us know your views on the hotel. We are pleased to admire the eclectic architecture of the hotel, which opened on December 30, 1930.
We are sorry to cause you inconveniences due to maintenance pool works during 4 days. For sure that you could enjoy the original pool, this pool is open every days. We called Tarzan Pool, because Johnny Weissmuller had his swimming exhibitions in the 30'S. It would be proper if you would go to our Hospitality Manager to report the incidents you observed in the pool; for sure the management would have answers for your doubt.
We hope you come back to our hotel in your next visit to Havana and enjoy again of your Caipiriña in front of the ocean in the hotel garden.
      Best regards,
      Antonio Martínez Rodríguez

Some of the staff here were lovely, but they were the exception - and we tipped them. Sadly, the crappy staff also expected tipping, and were only nice when delivering the check. Someone in management really needs to consider some training programs.
It's such a shame, because it's a grand and famous old hotel with a great view and lovely gardens.
PS - all of the restaurants here are ordinary but don't dine in the garden restaurant unless you enjoy really basic creole food.

Room Tip: Demand information about what your booking entitles you to.

      Dear Guest Trip Advisor
We appreciate your comments about the Hotel front trip advisor, unfortunately not all the staff was helpful. We will take into consideration your opinion and will discus this point with them. The mayority of the workers has more than 10 years of experience and are professionals graduated from to School of high level in and hotel service and tourism.
It is nice to know you could enjoy our attractive gardens and the view of the sea front.
The restaurant ”La Barraca ” located by the gardens has a grilled cuban food in a typical atmosphere, as you said, but we also have other choices, and international food at the Luxury restaurant ”Comedor de Aguiar”, international and cuban food at the buffet restaurant ”La Veranda”, a cafeteria ”Rincon del Cine” and the Snack Bar by the pool side.
We would like you to have you here in your next visit to Havana.
      Best regards,

This has to be the best hotel to stay in in havana if you're looking for charm, history and ambience. The building is beautiful and has a sense of grandeur, the bars are lovely, and setting on the malecon is outstanding - beautiful views from your hotel room of the sea and a stone's throw from some great bars and restaurants.

As per other reviews, this is not the most luxurious, 5 star hotel - it is like stepping back in time - but its charm more than makes up for that. you also have all amenities you could wish for, (although wifi is extortionate at usd 20 per day!) the rooms are big and comfortable and the hotel is impeccable.

Even if you do not stay here, i would recommend popping by for the historic tour (every day at 10am or 4pm) and/or for a mojito as there is often live music - day and night.

We loved it here and would definitely choose this hotel again if we ever return to Havana.

Stayed here for 3 nights in early June. Check-in was very quick and efficient - a Saturday evening. Hotel lobby and dining room very elegant.

Room on the 5th floor overlooked the attractive gardens. Windows not great for noise prevention but not too bad.

The room was large and clean though the bathroom needed some attention. Sink unit was new and fine, but bath urgently needed replacing and the shower was not great with poor hot water supply.

Breakfast was plentiful and pretty good. Lots of choice and no problems getting a table at any time and the hotel was busy.

Hotel tour worth doing and visiting the bunkers. Internet cost 6 cucs per hour but worked fine. Lots of bar options, musical entertainment and the gardens are very attractive overlooking the seafront.
